Daddy… Her Belly Moved. / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Moving Belly

“Daddy… her belly moved!””

The words cut through the wedding ceremony like a gunshot.

For one frozen second, nobody moved.

Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows of New Hope Baptist Church, scattering red and blue colors across polished wooden pews. White roses lined the aisle. The choir had just finished the final note of the wedding march.

Then Lily stepped backward.

The six-year-old girl stood beside Vanessa in her white flower-girl dress, her small basket hanging from one hand. Her braided hair was decorated with tiny white ribbons. Her eyes were enormous.

She pointed at Vanessa’s stomach.

“It moved,” Lily whispered.

Vanessa looked down.

Her rounded belly was perfectly still now.

She forced a laugh.

“Sweetheart, babies move all the time.””

Lily shook her head.

“No. That wasn't a baby.””

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Marcus, standing beside the altar in his black tuxedo, slowly turned toward his daughter.

“Lily,” he said gently, “what did you feel?””

Lily swallowed.

“I touched her belly, and something went like this.””

She pushed her hand sideways through the air.

“Like something inside moved away.””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“Lily, stop.””

The little girl looked at her.

“But—”

“I said stop.””

Marcus frowned.

“Vanessa.””

His bride turned toward him.

“What?””

“You're scaring her.””

Vanessa's breathing became noticeably faster.

“I am trying to get married, Marcus.””

The pastor lowered his Bible.

“Perhaps we should take a moment.””

“No,” Vanessa snapped.

The entire church went silent.

She immediately softened her voice.

“I’m sorry. I just… I’ve been nervous all morning.””

Marcus stared at her.

He knew Vanessa was nervous.

He had expected tears, shaking hands, maybe even a little panic.

But this was different.

She kept one hand pressed protectively over the side of her stomach.

Lily watched that hand.

Then she whispered, “Daddy…”

Marcus crouched slightly.

“What?””

“She slapped me yesterday too.””

Vanessa's head jerked toward her.

“I did not slap you.””

“You pushed my hand away.””

“Because you were touching me without asking!””

Marcus straightened.

“Vanessa, she's six.””

“I know how old she is.””

“Then talk to her like she's six.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

A woman in the second row whispered, “Oh my God.””

Another guest leaned toward her husband.

“What is happening?””

The pastor looked toward Marcus.

“Son, perhaps you should speak with your daughter privately.””

Marcus nodded.

“Lily, come here.””

She stepped toward him.

Vanessa moved at the same time.

“Don't.””

Marcus stopped.

“Don't what?””

“Don't make this into something it isn't.””

His eyes narrowed.

“I haven't made anything into anything.””

“You're looking at me like I'm lying.””

Marcus glanced down at her belly.

“Are you?””

Vanessa went pale.

The question hung between them.

Then Lily suddenly stepped closer.

Her little fingers reached toward the loose side of Vanessa's wedding gown.

Vanessa recoiled.

“Lily!””

The girl grabbed the fabric.

Something beige appeared beneath the lace.

Marcus saw it.

His expression changed instantly.

“What is that?””

Vanessa grabbed for the fabric.

“Nothing.””

Marcus caught her wrist.

“Vanessa.””

She pulled away.

The beige material slipped farther out.

A corner of foam.

Not skin.

Not a baby.

Foam.

The church erupted in gasps.

Marcus stared at it.

Vanessa stared at him.

Nobody breathed.

Then the fake belly pad slid halfway from beneath her dress and dropped against her thigh.

Marcus took one step backward.

His voice came out almost inaudible.

“What is that?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“I can explain.””

“You'd better.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“After the wedding.””

Marcus laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“After the wedding?””

Lily stood behind him.

Vanessa looked at the child.

Her face hardened.

“Lily, you promised.””

Marcus turned.

“What did she promise?””

Lily's lower lip shook.

Vanessa whispered, “Don't.””

Marcus knelt in front of his daughter.

“Tell me what?””

Lily looked past him toward the rear doors of the church.

Then she pointed.

“That man calls her his wife.””

Vanessa's face instantly turned white.

A man's voice came from behind the closed doors.

“Vanessa?””

Every head snapped toward the entrance.

Marcus slowly stood.

The church doors began to open.

Bright daylight flooded through the widening gap.

A tall male silhouette appeared behind the glare.

Vanessa took one terrified step backward.

Marcus looked at her.

“Who is that?””

She didn't answer.

The stranger stepped closer.

May you like

And Vanessa whispered the one word Marcus never expected to hear.

“Derrick.””
