Daddy… Her Belly Moved. / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Door

The doors opened another foot.

Marcus could not see the man's face.

Only the outline of broad shoulders.

A dark jacket.

One hand resting against the door.

But Vanessa knew exactly who stood there.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Marcus caught her arm.

“Who is Derrick?””

Vanessa stared at the doorway.

“Marcus…”

“Who is he?””

The stranger's voice came again.

“Vanessa, we need to talk.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“No.””

The man paused.

Marcus's voice hardened.

“You don't walk into my wedding and call my bride by her first name.””

A murmur swept through the church.

Vanessa pulled at Marcus's sleeve.

“Please.””

He turned to her.

“Please what?””

“Don't do this here.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Here?””

He gestured toward the church.

“Our wedding is happening here.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I can explain everything.””

“You've said that twice.””

“Marcus—”

“Who's Derrick?””

Before she could answer, Lily spoke.

“He's the man from the blue house.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus looked down.

“What blue house?””

Lily pointed toward Vanessa.

“She told me never to tell you.””

Marcus's expression tightened.

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa dropped into the nearest pew.

Her veil spilled across the white flowers decorating the aisle.

“I didn't mean for this to happen.””

Marcus slowly followed.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because you won't understand.””

Marcus gave a bitter smile.

“Try me.””

Across the aisle, several guests were openly crying now. Others were whispering into their phones.

The pastor quietly asked everyone to remain calm.

Lily stood beside Marcus, clutching his tuxedo jacket.

The man at the door finally stepped into the light.

He was Black, early thirties, wearing a charcoal suit without a tie. His face was tense, but his eyes were fixed entirely on Vanessa.

Marcus recognized him.

Not personally.

From photographs.

He had seen the face before.

On Vanessa's phone.

A picture she had once quickly swiped away.

Marcus's stomach dropped.

“You.””

Derrick stopped.

Vanessa looked between them.

Marcus whispered, “I've seen you.””

Derrick's eyes hardened.

“Then you know why I'm here.””

Marcus moved closer.

“I don't know anything.””

Derrick looked at Vanessa.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Derrick, please leave.””

“No.””

“Please.””

“You promised me.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“Promised you what?””

Derrick looked at him.

“That she'd tell you before today.””

Vanessa began crying.

Marcus's voice became quiet.

“You two know each other.””

“Yes,” Vanessa whispered.

“How?””

She said nothing.

“Vanessa.””

“I knew him before you.””

The sentence struck Marcus harder than a slap.

“How long?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Three years.””

Marcus stared at her.

“We've been together for two.””

“I know.””

“And you're pregnant.””

Vanessa covered her face.

Marcus looked at the fake belly lying beside the pew.

Then back at her.

“Are you?””

She couldn't answer.

Derrick did.

“No.””

A collective gasp rolled through the church.

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

“What did you say?””

Derrick stepped forward.

“She isn't pregnant.””

Vanessa stood abruptly.

“Stop!””

Marcus looked at her.

“Is he lying?””

She began shaking.

“Marcus…”

“Is he lying?””

Her silence was enough.

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, he heard nothing.

Not the guests.

Not the pastor.

Not the choir.

Only Lily breathing beside him.

Then his daughter tugged his hand.

“Daddy?””

He looked down.

Lily's eyes were wet.

“I'm sorry.””

Marcus knelt.

“For what?””

“I knew.””

His face tightened.

“Knew what?””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

“She told me the baby was pretend.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus whispered, “Why would you tell my daughter that?””

Vanessa sank onto the pew.

“Because I needed her help.””

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“With what?””

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“Getting you to marry me.””

Nobody spoke.

Derrick stepped closer.

“And that's only half of it.””

Marcus stood.

“What does that mean?””

Derrick reached into his jacket.

Vanessa immediately screamed.

“Don't!””

Every guest recoiled.

Marcus moved in front of Lily.

Derrick froze.

“I'm not armed.””

He slowly removed a folded envelope.

“I brought proof.””

Marcus stared at it.

“Proof of what?””

Derrick held the envelope toward him.

“Why Vanessa needed this wedding.””

Marcus didn't take it.

“Say it.””

Derrick looked directly into his eyes.

“She didn't come here to marry you.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

Derrick finished.

“She came here to take something from you.””

Marcus's face went cold.

“What?””

Derrick opened the envelope.

Inside was a single document.

At the top was Marcus's full legal name.

And underneath it was a line that made his blood run cold.

*Beneficiary Designation — Life Insurance Policy.*

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Why would my life insurance be involved?””

Vanessa couldn't speak.

Then Derrick pulled out another paper.

“This one explains who gets the money.””

Marcus reached for it.

Before his fingers touched the page, Vanessa lunged forward and snatched it away.

Marcus stared at her.

She was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

“Vanessa…”

She looked at him.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Then why did you make my daughter lie to me?””

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

The little girl had begun crying silently.

Then Derrick said something that made every person in the church turn toward him.

“She didn't make Lily lie.””

He looked at Marcus.

“She made Lily believe her father was going to die.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Derrick pointed toward Vanessa.

“Ask her what she told your daughter would happen if you didn't marry her.””

Vanessa's face collapsed.

Lily whispered through her tears.

“She said Daddy would be gone before Christmas.””

May you like

Marcus slowly turned toward his daughter.

And for the first time that morning, he realized the fake pregnancy might not be the worst lie Vanessa had told.
