Chapter 8 - CHLOE BROUGHT HER BABY TO MY DOORChloe gave birth to a daughter.

Her name was Lily.

Marcus was confirmed as the biological father.

He wanted to be involved.

That should have been the end of our connection.

But six weeks later, Chloe came to my door.

She carried Lily in a small pink blanket.

I stared.

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes.”

She looked terrified.

“I just wanted to say goodbye.”

“Going somewhere?”

“Back to Colorado. My mom lives there.”

“That sounds good.”

“I think so.”

Silence.

Then Chloe started crying.

“I’m sorry.”

I had heard it before.

But this time felt different.

Maybe motherhood changed her.

Maybe consequences did.

Maybe both.

“I keep thinking about Samuel’s shower.”

“So do I.”

“I stood there while they humiliated you.”

“Yes.”

“I said horrible things.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

She almost smiled.

Then I surprised both of us.

“But I don’t want you carrying me around forever either.”

She looked confused.

“What?”

“Raise your daughter better than they raised Julian.”

Her eyes filled.

“That’s it?”

“That’s not small.”

I looked at Lily.

“She deserves a mother who doesn’t need to hurt another woman to feel valuable.”

Chloe cried.

“I can do that.”

“Then do it.”

She hugged Lily tighter.

Before leaving, she asked:

“Do you hate me?”

I thought.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“I hated what you did.”

There was a difference.

I understood that now.

Chloe walked away.

I watched her carry her daughter toward the car.

Two mothers.

Two babies.

Once positioned as enemies by people obsessed with inheritance.

May you like

Now simply women trying to raise children better than the generation before us.

That felt like victory.
