Chapter 9 - JULIAN FINALLY ASKED ABOUT HIS SONJulian was sentenced when Samuel was almost one.
The court imposed years of imprisonment.
Charles received even longer.
Patricia avoided the longest sentence but still faced incarceration and restitution.
Julian asked to speak before sentencing.
He apologized to investors.
Employees.
His parents.
Then finally:
“My wife.”
I hated that.
I hadn’t been his wife in a long time.
He looked at me.
“I destroyed the best thing that ever happened to me.”
I said nothing.
“I thought being a Vance meant I was supposed to win.”
Samuel’s photograph was in my purse.
Julian continued.
“My father taught me everything was competition.”
Charles stared ahead.
“My mother taught me family reputation mattered more than truth.”
Patricia cried.
“And I believed them because it was easier than becoming my own man.”
Then he looked at me.
“Is Samuel healthy?”
It was the first time he had asked me directly.
I almost refused to answer.
Then:
“Yes.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“Does he look like me?”
That hurt.
“He has your eyes.”
Tears appeared.
“I’m sorry.”
I believed he was sorry.
That did not mean I trusted him.
That did not mean consequences disappeared.
People often confuse forgiveness with reunion.
They are not the same.
Months later, Julian wrote Samuel a letter.
He sent it to me.
I read it.
Samuel,
Someday you may learn what I did.
I hope nobody lies to you to protect my memory.
That line surprised me.
Your father was greedy. Cowardly. Cruel to your mother when she deserved protection.
You do not owe me pride.
You do not owe me forgiveness.
But if you ever wonder whether you were unwanted, know this: the first time I heard your heartbeat, I cried.
I had been there.
That was true.
I lost sight of the father I wanted to be because I cared more about being the son my parents expected.

I folded the letter.
One day Samuel could decide whether to read it.
