Chapter 6: The Money That Disappeared
Richard didn't move.
For eleven years, Vanessa had been the person who knew what to say when a situation became uncomfortable.
She could charm a skeptical donor, silence a difficult employee, and turn an argument into a conversation about someone else's shortcomings.
But now she was asking him not to open an envelope.
And she had never looked more frightened.
"What is in it?"" Richard asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"Nothing that needs to be discussed here.""
"Then why are you afraid of it?""
"I'm not afraid.""
"You're shaking.""
She looked down at her hands and immediately clasped them together.
Emma watched from beside Daniel.
She had spent three months collecting documents, comparing dates, and trying to understand why her scholarship application had been rejected. She knew about the inaccurate declaration. She knew about the receipts. She knew that a payment had been made and then withdrawn.
But she didn't know what the envelope contained.
Dr. Brooks approached Richard and held it out.
"The review committee has authorized the release of this summary to the people directly involved. Emma requested that it be available before the ceremony ended.""
Richard accepted the envelope.
His fingers felt strangely numb.
"Emma," he said, "did you know about this?""
"Only that a payment disappeared from my student account. I didn't know who made the withdrawal.""
Richard looked at Vanessa.
"Did you?""
She raised her chin.
"I handled the paperwork for Emma's education. There were several accounts, transfers, and expenses. I cannot be expected to remember every transaction.""
"Then you won't mind if we look.""
He opened the envelope.
Inside were several pages of financial summaries and transaction records. The account numbers were partially masked, and the private details had been restricted, but the dates and transaction descriptions were clear enough.
Richard read the first page.
Then the second.
His mouth tightened.
He turned to the final page and stopped.
"What is it?"" Emma asked.
Richard looked at her, then at Daniel.
"The money was transferred out of your education account three weeks before your scholarship application was rejected.""
Emma felt the ground shift beneath her.
"How much?""
Richard told her.
It was enough to cover the remaining deposit on her college enrollment and several months of expenses.
She gripped Daniel's hand.
"Where did it go?""
Richard scanned the page again.
"The receiving account belongs to an investment company.""
Vanessa exhaled sharply.
"There. You see? It was an investment transfer. Nothing more.""
Richard raised his eyes.
"An investment account registered in your name.""
Her lips parted.
No one spoke.
Richard held the page between them.
"Why was Emma's education money transferred into an account under your name?""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"It was temporary. I was moving money between accounts to get a better return.""
"Without telling me?""
"I didn't need your permission to manage Emma's finances.""
"Then why did you tell me her education fund was short?""
Vanessa stared at him.
Richard continued.
"You told me the account needed an additional contribution. You said Daniel had failed to pay his share and that you were covering the difference.""
"I was covering the difference!""
"With money that was already in her education account?""
Vanessa looked toward the watching families.
"Richard, please. This is a misunderstanding.""
He turned the page over.
"Then explain this.""
The record showed that the transferred funds had remained in the investment account for several weeks before being moved again.
The final destination was another account.
This time, the name was unfamiliar.
Emma leaned closer.
"Who is that?""
Richard studied the entry.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa reached for the document.
"Give that to me.""
Richard stepped back.
"No.""
Her face changed.
It was a small movement, but everyone nearby saw it. The woman who had controlled the conversation for years had just been denied something she expected to receive automatically.
"Richard," she said through clenched teeth, "you are embarrassing me.""
He stared at her.
"Did you move Emma's money?""
"I moved money that I was responsible for managing.""
"That's not an answer.""
"It was for the family.""
"Which family?""
Vanessa blinked.
Richard's voice broke.
"Emma's? Ours? Or yours?""
She looked away.
Daniel stood beside his daughter, his expression grave.
"Emma," he whispered, "you don't have to keep doing this if it's hurting you.""
She shook her head.
"I need to know.""
"I know.""
"What if the money was supposed to pay for my college?""
Daniel squeezed her hand.
"Then we'll figure out what happened. One step at a time.""
He said it with the same steady voice he had used when she was seven and frightened by a thunderstorm.
Emma looked at him and felt tears burn behind her eyes.
Even now, when the truth was exposing people who had humiliated him, he was still thinking about her.
Dr. Brooks spoke carefully.
"The school cannot determine whether a transfer was authorized or appropriate. That would require further review by the relevant financial institution and, if necessary, the appropriate authorities. We will preserve the records and provide them through the proper channels.""
Vanessa seized on the statement.
"Exactly. This is not proof of wrongdoing.""
"No one has said it is," Dr. Brooks replied.
"But it is a legitimate question that needs an answer.""
Richard folded the pages.
"I want a full accounting of every dollar connected to Emma's education.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You can't simply demand that.""
"Watch me.""
"You have no idea what you're accusing me of.""
"I'm not accusing you. I'm asking you to explain what you've done.""
She looked around the courtyard.
Families were still watching. Some held their phones, but most had lowered them, recognizing that the ceremony had become something far more personal than a public spectacle.
Vanessa had spent years carefully cultivating the impression that her family was flawless.
Now the cracks were visible to everyone.
She turned toward Emma.
"Sweetheart, I need you to understand something. Your father and I have always had different ideas about money. Daniel thinks love means sacrificing everything he has. I believe love means making smart decisions that protect your future.""
Emma wiped her cheek.
"Then why didn't you tell me where the money went?""
"Because you were too young to understand.""
"I'm eighteen now.""
"You're still my child.""
"And he's still my dad.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Do you have any idea how much pressure I've been under? Richard expects a certain standard of living. Our social obligations cost money.
The house costs money. Your education costs money.""
Richard stared at her.
"Are you saying you used Emma's education fund to pay our household expenses?""
Vanessa said nothing.
"Vanessa?""
She finally whispered, "I was going to replace it.""
Richard looked down at the pages.
"When?""
She didn't answer.
Emma's knees weakened.
Daniel put an arm around her shoulders.
"Easy, baby.""
She leaned against him for a second, then straightened.
"Mom, did you know the scholarship committee would reject me if they believed Dad hadn't supported me?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I knew the application was competitive.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"I didn't think they would reject you.""
"But they did.""
"I thought I could fix it.""
"How?""
Vanessa's eyes opened.
For the first time, she looked directly at her daughter without trying to control the conversation.
"I thought I could make everything right before anyone noticed.""
Emma stared at her.
"Before anyone noticed what?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
Richard stepped closer.
"Tell us the truth.""
She looked at him.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Emma, whose silver bracelet shone in the bright afternoon sunlight.
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
"The money wasn't supposed to disappear.""
Richard frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa pressed a hand against her necklace.
"It was supposed to go to someone who promised to help us.""
"Who?"" Emma demanded.
Vanessa looked toward the parking lot.
A black luxury sedan was parked beyond the graduation tent, its windows reflecting the sunlight.
Inside the car, a man sat watching the ceremony.
When Vanessa noticed him, her entire expression changed.
Daniel followed her gaze.
"Who is that?""
Vanessa took one step backward.
Richard turned toward the car.
The man opened the driver's door and stepped out, holding a second manila envelope.
He walked toward the courtyard without hurrying.
Vanessa whispered, "No. He wasn't supposed to come.""
Emma tightened her grip on Daniel's hand.
The stranger stopped just beyond the reserved family row.
He looked at Vanessa, then at Richard, and finally at Emma.
"Mrs. Cole," he said, "I'm sorry to interrupt the graduation. But since the financial records are now being discussed, I believe it's time you explained the other transfer.""
He held out the envelope.
"And this time, you need to tell your daughter why you paid someone to keep a secret about her father.""
Vanessa went completely still.
Daniel looked at Emma.
Emma looked at the envelope.
May you like
And suddenly, the missing money was no longer the most frightening thing in the courtyard.
The stranger knew something about Daniel Mercer that even Daniel himself might not know.
