Chapter 7: The Secret Behind the Missing Money
The stranger placed the manila envelope on the nearest empty chair.
Nobody reached for it.
He was a Black American man in his late fifties, wearing a charcoal suit and carrying a leather briefcase. His expression was professional, almost apologetic, but his eyes remained fixed on Vanessa.
"My name is Malcolm Reed," he said.
"I'm an independent accountant. Mrs. Cole hired my firm to review several private financial arrangements last year.""
Vanessa shook her head sharply.
"Malcolm, this is neither the time nor the place.""
"You said that when I called you yesterday.""
"Because I told you the review was finished.""
"The financial review was finished. The discrepancies weren't resolved.""
Richard stepped forward.
"What discrepancies?""
Malcolm opened his briefcase and removed a thin stack of papers.
"Mr. Cole, I understand that this is a family matter, and I don't intend to disclose private financial information beyond what is necessary. However, your wife authorized my firm to examine the transfer history of an education account associated with Emma.""
Richard looked at Vanessa.
"You hired an accountant to review Emma's money?""
Vanessa's face had become rigid.
"I wanted to make sure everything was properly documented.""
Malcolm nodded.
"That was the original instruction. During the review, we identified a transfer from Emma's education account into an investment account controlled by Mrs. Cole. A subsequent payment went to an individual whose identity was not disclosed in the initial paperwork.""
Emma felt Daniel's arm tighten around her shoulders.
"Who received the money?"" she asked.
Malcolm looked at her.
"The recipient was a man named Peter Lawson.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Richard frowned.
"Who is Peter Lawson?""
Malcolm turned a page.
"He was a private consultant who claimed he could improve Emma's college funding prospects through a network of educational donors.""
Emma stared at her mother.
"You paid someone to help me get a scholarship?""
"That's not what happened," Vanessa said quickly.
Malcolm continued.
"The agreement specified that the consultant would provide application assistance and introduce the family to potential donors. However, there was no documentation showing that the promised services were completed.""
Richard's voice hardened.
"How much did you pay him?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Malcolm named the amount.
Richard stepped backward as if someone had struck him.
"That was Emma's enrollment money.""
"I was going to replace it," Vanessa insisted.
"With what?""
"My investments were supposed to mature.""
"When?""
Vanessa looked at him helplessly.
Malcolm placed another page on the chair.
"There's an additional concern. The consultant received the payment approximately two weeks before the scholarship declaration was submitted. According to the agreement, he was supposed to review the family's financial information before the application was finalized.""
Emma felt her stomach tighten.
"So he knew about Dad's payments?""
Malcolm nodded.
"The records indicate that he received copies of several financial documents, including the declaration stating that Daniel Mercer had provided no significant educational support.""
Daniel stared at the page.
"Why would a consultant need that?""
Malcolm hesitated.
"That is the question I was hired to investigate.""
Vanessa suddenly reached for the papers.
"Enough! You're presenting incomplete information and allowing everyone to draw conclusions that aren't justified.""
Malcolm moved the documents out of her reach.
"You asked me to provide an accurate accounting.""
"I asked you to review investments.""
"You also asked me to determine why the scholarship application had been rejected.""
"I changed my mind.""
"The work had already been completed.""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"Then send me the report privately!""
Malcolm looked at Richard.
"Mr. Cole, the second transfer was made from an account funded partly by your contributions. I believe you should be aware of the relevant facts before deciding how to proceed.""
Richard's face went pale.
"Partly by my contributions?""
"Yes.""
He looked at Vanessa.
"You told me you were putting my monthly contributions into Emma's college fund.""
"I did.""
"But you moved some of that money to this consultant.""
"It was an investment in her future!""
Emma stepped forward.
"Mom, why did you tell me Dad couldn't afford to help me when you were taking money from my college fund to pay a stranger?""
Vanessa looked at her daughter, and for a moment her expression softened.
"Because I was trying to solve a problem.""
"What problem?""
Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.
Richard answered for her.
"The problem of making sure Daniel didn't get credit for raising you.""
Vanessa whipped around.
"That's not fair!""
"Isn't it?""
"I wanted Emma to have a future that didn't depend on him!""
Daniel finally spoke.
"My daughter has never depended on me to become a good person. She has depended on me to be there when she needed me.""
His voice remained calm, but his eyes were wet.
"I never needed credit for that.""
Emma turned toward him.
"I know, Dad.""
She reached for his hand.
Vanessa watched them, her expression changing from anger to something more desperate.
"You don't understand," she whispered.
"When Emma was little, I was terrified that she'd grow up and choose you over me.""
The confession silenced the courtyard.
Daniel stared at her.
"She was never supposed to choose.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You made everything look so easy. You never complained when she called you first. You never told her how much you struggled. You just kept showing up.""
"Because she needed me.""
"And I needed her to see what I had done for her!""
Emma's eyes filled.
"Then why didn't you let me love you both?""
Vanessa looked away.
No one answered for her.
Malcolm quietly gathered the loose pages.
"There is one final item I need to clarify.""
Richard turned toward him.
"What now?""
"The consultant's agreement included a clause requiring him to disclose any prior relationship with the family. Our review uncovered correspondence suggesting that Mr. Lawson knew Mrs. Cole before Emma's scholarship application.""
Vanessa's face went completely white.
Richard stared at her.
"How did he know you?""
She shook her head.
"He was a professional contact.""
Malcolm looked down at the final page.
"The correspondence predates the scholarship application by eleven years.""
Daniel went still.
Eleven years.
The same year Vanessa had left him.
The same year she had stopped answering his calls and begun telling people that he was incapable of being a proper father.
Emma looked at her mother.
"Who is Peter Lawson?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"Someone I knew a long time ago.""
Richard took the document from Malcolm and examined the date.
Then he looked at Vanessa with an expression Daniel had never seen before.
"You knew him before you left Daniel?""
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Malcolm placed the last page on the chair.
It contained a short message from Peter Lawson, dated three days before Vanessa had moved out of Daniel's house.
Richard read it aloud.
"Once you leave him, the arrangement we discussed can finally move forward. But you must make sure he never learns why.""
Daniel felt Emma's fingers tighten around his.
He stared at the message.
"What arrangement?"" he whispered.
Vanessa took a stumbling step backward.
And for the first time in eleven years, she looked at Daniel not with contempt, but with genuine fear.
May you like
Because the secret she had tried to bury was no longer about money.
It was about the reason she had left him in the first place.
