Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO WALKED AWAY FROM THE FIRE

Graham Pike disappeared before police reached Ashford estate.
That alone did not prove arson.
But it made everybody nervous.
Enzo turned over all records.
No family cleanup.
No private settlement.
Police reopened fire investigation.
Elena gave statement.
Lorenzo gave one too.
Edmund reluctantly cooperated after attorneys convinced him obstruction would be worse.
Camilla stayed away from Marchetti House.
Her engagement ended formally.
Press learned enough to create frenzy.
LOST HEIRESS FOUND WORKING AS MAID
Elena hated headline.
“I wasn’t lost.”
Enzo looked at her.
“No?”
“I was hidden.”
Difference.
Then worse headline:
BILLIONAIRE CANCELS ENGAGEMENT AFTER CHILDHOOD FIANCÉE RETURNS
Elena threw paper away.
“I’m not marrying you.”
Enzo almost laughed.
“I didn’t ask.”
“Good.”
“I was nine.”
“You were annoying.”
“I remember.”
For first time, something light.
Then police found Graham Pike.
He surrendered through attorney.
Old.
Seventy.
Cancer.
He knew time running.
He admitted going to Bellandi estate night fire.
Malcolm Ashford ordered him to steal accounting files and frighten Matteo into signing land release.
Not kill.
Graham brought accelerant intending burn detached records building.
But fire spread through service passage into main house.
He panicked.
Left.
Could have called fire department.
Did not.
Why?
Because it exposed crime.
People died because preserving secret mattered more than calling for help.
Elena listened to recorded confession.
Hands shook.
“My mother.”
Enzo sat beside.
No touch without asking.
She reached for his hand first.
He held.
Graham admitted Malcolm paid officials afterward to steer investigation toward electrical cause.
Lorenzo knew security was disabled but not arson.
Edmund learned truth months later.
Did nothing.
Camilla learned as adult.
Did nothing.
Generations of silence.
Then Graham revealed Matteo survived.
He knew.
Malcolm knew too.
Why not hunt?
They tried for two years, failed.
Then decided dead-on-paper was useful.
If Matteo returned, acquisitions challenged.
But he stayed hidden for Elena.
Then Graham said:
“Matteo contacted me twelve years ago.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
Her father met Graham secretly.
Why?
Wanted confession.
Graham refused.
Matteo threatened expose.
Then his car was followed.
Elena remembered moving immediately afterward.
Graham claimed he never harmed.
Maybe.
Then he gave Matteo one thing to buy silence temporarily:
Original contractor work order.
Signed by Malcolm.
Matteo hid it.
Where?
He told Graham:
Where Enzo once promised her the moon.
Enzo looked at Elena.
The fig tree.
Their childhood place at old Bellandi estate.
Now Ashford luxury vineyard.
The crescent locket.
Moon.
They obtained court-authorized access? Perhaps estate owners under investigation agreed. Enzo and Elena went with police.
Old fig tree still there.
Elena cried seeing.
At base, one stone loose.
Metal tube.
Inside:
Work order.
Signed Malcolm Ashford.
Payment.
Instructions:
Remove night guard. Disable west-wing alarms. Retrieve Bellandi ledgers. Use controlled burn in archive if necessary.
Controlled burn.
Fire spread.
Direct evidence.
Then another letter.
Matteo to Elena.
If you are reading this with Enzo, then I was right that truth eventually finds people who remember each other.
She cried.
Then:
Do not confuse recovering your name with owing anyone your future. You are Elena because you choose to be, not because Bellandi property needs an heir.
Important.
No forced childhood engagement.
Then final document.
Ownership trust.
If surviving Bellandi heir proved, large share of disputed properties returned or compensated.
Estimated value:
$310 million.
Elena stared.
“I don’t want it.”
Enzo said:
“You don’t have to decide today.”
Good.
Then another clause.
Marchetti family owed Bellandi trust 12% equity in joint holding company because Vittorio’s guarantee protections had been triggered unlawfully after false death.
That made Elena not only wealthy.
She became significant shareholder in Enzo’s company.
Camilla had known.
That was why merger depended on removing her.
Then Elena asked:
“Did you know?”
“No.”
She believed.
Then Isabel found final modern transaction.
Six months earlier, Camilla personally authorized $5 million payment to Graham Pike’s security company.
Reason:
Legacy Risk Containment.
Enzo stared.
“What risk?”
Graham refused answer initially.
Then confessed.
Camilla paid him to locate Matteo Croft’s daughter.
Elena.
She had been hunting her before hiring her.
The maid job was not coincidence at all.
May you like
Camilla had brought Elena into the house because she wanted the locket, the key, and proof destroyed.
The public humiliation was only what happened after she failed to find them.
