Chapter 8 - THE SECRET LORENZO KEPT AFTER THE FIRE

Lorenzo confessed.

Four years before Matteo died, Matteo contacted him.

“I wanted to make it right.”

Elena stared.

“You knew my father was alive.”

“Yes.”

“For four years before he died.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell Enzo?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Matteo asked me not to.”

That mattered.

Not complete betrayal maybe.

Why did Matteo trust man who sold them?

He didn’t.

He used him.

Matteo needed back channel to Edmund.

He wanted enough land/money to secure Elena.

In exchange, he would remain officially dead until Elena adulthood.

Edmund refused because acknowledging Matteo alive reopened everything.

Lorenzo then offered Matteo money personally.

Matteo rejected.

But before leaving, he gave Lorenzo sealed envelope.

“Give this to Enzo if Elena ever comes back without me.”

Lorenzo kept.

Why not reveal earlier?

Shame.

Again.

He produced now.

Enzo almost exploded.

“You’ve had letter?”

“Yes.”

“How many things did you hide because you were ashamed?”

Lorenzo answered:

“Too many.”

Finally.

Letter from Matteo.

Enzo, if Elena returns, do not mistake my secrecy for a request that you save her. She does not need saving. Believe her when she tells you who she is.

Enzo smiled sadly.

Then:

Your uncle helped create danger, but he also helped me once when I needed escape. People are rarely one thing. Do not let anger make history easier than it was.

Elena stopped.

Her father had nuance even in hiding.

Lorenzo had indeed helped Matteo obtain new identity documents after fire.

Why?

Guilt.

So he was both profiteer and protector later.

Not absolution.

Complex.

Then final line:

The date on the necklace marks the day Elena died on paper. Do not let anyone use paperwork to kill her twice.

There.

Meaning engraving.

Not just warning.

Identity.

Elena cried.

She had spent nineteen years as Adeline/various aliases.

Now legal restoration.

Court issued corrections.

Elena Bellandi officially alive.

Old death declaration vacated.

Trust restored.

On day document finalized, she asked Enzo to come.

Judge? Administrative hearing maybe.

When clerk said name, she whispered:

“That sounds strange.”

“What?”

“My own name.”

He answered:

“You can take time.”

Good.

Then she signed.

Elena Sofia Bellandi.

Not Adeline Croft.

She kept Croft as middle? Maybe to honor father alias. She chose Elena Croft Bellandi? But identity. Could say she retained Croft professionally as reminder of life lived.

Then Ashford criminal/civil outcomes.

Graham sentenced.

Edmund resigned, paid settlement, faced penalties.

Camilla's sentence/probation plus community? Fine.

Lorenzo barred from company management temporarily, restitution.

Marchetti board restructured.

Employee trust expanded.

Bellandi assets returned via independent trust.

Then Elena did unexpected.

She reopened old Bellandi estate—not as private palace.

Part vineyard.

Part cultural foundation/fire safety charity? Could be too saintly. Better sustainable estate, small museum archive, hotel maybe.

She restored her mother's garden.

Kept fig tree.

No grand savior.

Then Camilla asked one final meeting with Elena.

At estate.

Elena accepted.

Camilla looked at restored house.

“My family owned this for nineteen years.”

Elena answered:

“They controlled title.”

Camilla nodded.

Difference.

Then:

“I used to think people like you losing property meant people like us were better at keeping it.”

Elena stared.

“That’s disgusting.”

“I know.”

Good.

“I needed to tell you because pretending I wasn’t that person would be another lie.”

Then she apologized specifically.

“For ordering you to kneel.”

“For touching you with crop.”

“For arranging your employment as trap.”

“For searching room.”

“For trying to erase identity.”

Elena listened.

Then:

“I believe you’re sorry.”

Camilla looked hopeful.

“That isn’t forgiveness.”

Hope disappeared.

“Okay.”

“I may never like you.”

“Fair.”

“But I don’t need you destroyed.”

Camilla nodded.

That was enough.

Then Enzo arrived later.

Elena joked:

“You have excellent taste in fiancées.”

He groaned.

“Please.”

“You picked one who tried to erase me.”

“Technically my uncle introduced.”

“You proposed.”

“Ouch.”

Accountability.

Then Enzo said:

“I’m not going to ask anything today.”

“Good.”

“I just want dinner.”

“Good.”

Pause.

“With me.”

She smiled.

May you like

“Maybe.”

Adult courtship.
