Chapter 14: The Last Lie
I looked at the photograph.
My newborn face.
My mother's handwriting.
A date that matched my birth certificate.
Everything I had believed about my childhood suddenly felt uncertain.
"Created?"" I whispered.
My mother nodded.
"Your biological father was Dr. Whitmore.""
I stared at her.
"My father was James Miller.""
"James raised you. He loved you. But he wasn't your biological father.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"I was young. I had complications during pregnancy. The clinic offered an experimental fertility procedure.""
"And you agreed?""
"I was desperate to have a child.""
"So you used donor material without telling anyone?""
My mother began crying.
"At the time, the doctor told me it was legal.""
I looked at Adrian.
"Did you know?""
He nodded.
"I discovered it years ago.""
My mother continued.
"After you were born, I found out the doctor had used his own material. I wanted to expose him. But he threatened to destroy our family.""
I thought about James.
The man who had taught me to ride a bicycle.
The man who had carried me on his shoulders.
The man who had cried when I got married.
He had been my father in every way that mattered.
"Did Dad know?""
My mother looked away.
"Not until much later.""
"Did he know before he died?""
She nodded.
I closed my eyes.
My mother continued.
"James wanted to tell you. But he was diagnosed with cancer. He asked me to wait until he recovered.""
"He never recovered.""
She shook her head.
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
"Why did you let me believe he was my biological father?""
"Because he was your father.""
I looked at her.
"Then why couldn't you tell me the truth?""
She had no answer.
Adrian stepped toward the table.
"Now you understand why the clinic had to disappear.""
Arthur looked at him.
"You could have exposed everything years ago.""
"I tried.""
"You threatened Daniel.""
"I wanted him to help me.""
"You nearly killed him!""
Adrian's expression hardened.
"I didn't cause the accident.""
My mother interrupted.
"Enough.""
She looked at me.
"Nia, I need you to listen. Ethan is the one who arranged Daniel's accident.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Where is he?""
"He's coming here.""
Adrian checked his watch.
"He should already be downstairs.""
A loud noise came from the hallway.
Then a voice.
"How touching.""
Ethan appeared in the doorway.
He looked exactly like Daniel.
Same eyes.
Same jawline.
Same expression.
But there was something cruel about the way he smiled.
He held a gun in his right hand.
Emily gasped.
Vanessa pulled her behind her.
Arthur stepped forward.
"Ethan, put it down.""
Ethan laughed.
"You always did enjoy giving orders.""
He looked at Adrian.
"Nice work getting everyone together.""
Adrian stood still.
"You said you wanted the records.""
"I do.""
"Then take them.""
Ethan glanced at me.
"And the key.""
I held it tightly.
"No.""
He pointed the gun toward the ceiling.
"Don't make me repeat myself.""
My mother stepped forward.
"Ethan, please. This has gone too far.""
He turned toward her.
"You don't get to say that.""
She flinched.
"You abandoned me.""
"I was protecting you.""
"Everyone protected everyone except me.""
His voice cracked.
For the first time, I saw something beneath his anger.
A little boy who had spent his entire life believing he was unwanted.
But then he raised the gun again.
"Give me the key.""
I looked at Daniel's photograph.
The one with the three newborns.
I remembered his final message.
One of us knows the truth. One of us wants revenge. One of us is still protecting the family.
I looked at Adrian.
Then Ethan.
Then Margaret.
I suddenly understood that Daniel had not been talking about the triplets.
He had been talking about the three people who had raised them.
Arthur knew the truth.
My mother wanted revenge against the clinic.
Margaret had spent years protecting the family.
And Ethan had been using all three.
"Ethan," I said quietly.
He looked at me.
"What?""
"Daniel knows you arranged the accident.""
His smile disappeared.
"Daniel knows nothing.""
"He survived. He told us everything.""
Ethan glanced toward the monitor.
"That's impossible.""
I took a step toward him.
"He knows about the payments. The clinic. The birth records.""
Ethan's gun trembled.
Then he laughed.
"Daniel was always the favorite.""
"Why?""
"Because he got the family. The house. The inheritance. The childhood I was denied.""
I looked at him.
"You could have had a relationship with him.""
"He would never have accepted me.""
"You don't know that.""
"I know enough.""
He pointed the gun at Arthur.
"Give me the register.""
Arthur didn't move.
Ethan fired.
The bullet struck the wall beside Arthur's head.
Emily screamed.
Vanessa pulled her down.
I threw the silver key across the room.
It skidded beneath the desk.
Ethan turned toward it.
Adrian moved.
He lunged at Ethan, grabbing his gun arm.
They crashed against the table.
The weapon fired again.
Glass shattered.
Margaret screamed.
Arthur rushed forward.
I grabbed Emily and pulled her behind the filing cabinets.
Then the basement door opened.
Two police officers entered.
"DROP THE WEAPON!""
Ethan struggled.
Adrian managed to knock the gun from his hand.
One officer tackled Ethan to the floor.
The other secured Adrian.
I stared at them.
"Who called you?""
The first officer looked toward the hallway.
"Your husband.""
I stopped breathing.
A man appeared behind them.
He was thinner than I remembered.
His hair was longer.
There were scars along his cheek.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
Daniel.
My husband.
Alive.
I ran toward him.
He caught me in his arms.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
I pressed my face against his chest.
"You let me bury you.""
His arms tightened around me.
"I'm sorry.""
"You let Lily cry over your coffin.""
He closed his eyes.
"I know.""
"She thinks you're dead.""
"I know, sweetheart.""
I pulled away.
"Why?""
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
"Because I needed him to believe he'd succeeded.""
I shook my head.
"And what about us?""
His face crumpled.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
I stepped back.
"You don't get to decide what I can survive.""
He nodded.
"You're right.""
Then he looked past me.
His eyes found Emily.
For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.
"Hello, Emily.""
She stared at him.
"You're Daniel?""
He nodded.
"The man who raised Lily.""
Emily swallowed.
"You're my uncle?""
"Yes.""
She looked down.
"Did you know about me?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"I found out three months before the accident.""
"Why didn't you find me?""
"I tried. I was going to tell your mother everything.""
He glanced at me.
"I should have done it sooner.""
Emily looked at him for a long moment.
Then she whispered, "I'm glad you're alive.""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Me too.""
As the officers led Ethan away, he turned toward me.
"This isn't over, Nia.""
I looked directly at him.
"For our family, it is.""
But as he disappeared through the doorway, Adrian called after us.
"Wait!""
Everyone turned.
He looked at Daniel.
"There's one more file.""
Daniel went pale.
"What file?""
Adrian smiled faintly.
"The original clinic records.""
He looked at me.
"And they prove something even your mother doesn't know.""
My mother froze.
Adrian continued.
"Nia, you were never supposed to be the patient.""
May you like
He paused.
"You were supposed to be the donor.""
