Chapter 9: The Father Who Signed the Wrong Name
Arthur dropped into the nearest chair.
For the first time since I had met him, my father-in-law looked old.
Not simply tired.
Broken.
I held up the document.
"Explain.""
He stared at the signature.
"I can explain.""
"Then do it.""
Emily stood beside me, holding the paper with trembling fingers.
"Are you saying you're my father?""
Arthur looked at her.
"No.""
"Then why is your name here?""
He closed his eyes.
"Because I signed the transfer papers.""
I felt the room tilt.
"You signed them?""
Arthur nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because Margaret asked me to.""
Margaret turned toward him.
"Arthur, don't.""
He looked at her.
"Enough. We've hidden too much.""
He faced me again.
"Twenty years ago, the clinic was involved in something illegal. They were using donor material without proper consent. Ethan had arranged for his genetic material to be used in a private procedure.""
I shook my head.
"Why would he need that?""
"Because he believed he would never have children naturally.""
Emily crossed her arms.
"So he used someone else's body without permission?""
Arthur nodded.
"That's what the records suggest.""
I felt sick.
"And my mother?""
"She discovered what had happened. She was furious. She wanted you protected.""
"By taking my baby?""
"She thought it was temporary.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Nothing about eighteen years is temporary.""
Arthur lowered his head.
"I know.""
"Then explain Lily's record.""
His expression changed.
"That is where things became complicated.""
I held up the document.
"Why does it say her biological mother is unknown?""
Arthur rubbed his face.
"Because the original record was altered.""
"By whom?""
He looked toward Vanessa.
My sister began shaking her head.
"Arthur, no.""
He continued.
"After Daniel married you, he wanted to have a child. You underwent fertility treatment because the doctors believed you might have difficulty conceiving again.""
I remembered the treatment.
The injections.
The appointments.
The endless waiting.
Daniel holding my hand when the first test came back positive.
Arthur's voice grew quieter.
"Someone switched the donor records.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
"Margaret discovered it after Lily was born.""
I turned toward my mother-in-law.
"Did you know?""
Margaret began crying.
"Yes.""
"Who was the biological mother?""
She looked at Arthur.
He answered.
"Vanessa.""
I stopped breathing.
Emily looked at her adoptive mother.
"What?""
Vanessa backed away.
"No.""
Arthur continued.
"Vanessa had undergone treatment at the same clinic. Her eggs were used in an unauthorized procedure. The embryo was implanted in Nia without her knowledge.""
I stared at my sister.
"You're saying Lily is Vanessa's biological daughter?""
Arthur nodded.
Emily covered her mouth.
Vanessa began sobbing.
"I didn't know.""
I couldn't move.
For five years, Lily had called me Mommy.
And I had believed that I was her biological mother.
But the woman who had secretly raised my first daughter had also given birth genetically to my second.
The two girls were sisters in a way I had never imagined.
And Daniel had known.
I looked at Arthur.
"Did Daniel know Lily wasn't biologically mine?""
"Yes.""
"From the beginning?""
"No. He discovered it after she was born.""
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he believed you were her real mother in every way that mattered.""
I felt tears running down my face.
"That wasn't his decision to make.""
Arthur nodded.
"You're right.""
Vanessa stepped toward me.
"Nia, I swear I didn't know they had used my eggs.""
I looked at her.
"Then why did you sign the documents?""
"Because Mother told me the baby needed protection.""
"Which baby?""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"Both.""
Emily stared at her.
"How could you do this to us?""
Vanessa reached for her.
Emily moved away.
"Don't.""
I turned back to Arthur.
"Where did the original records come from?""
He pointed toward the USB drive.
"Daniel found the clinic's archived files. There is another video.""
I opened the laptop.
A folder appeared.
*FINAL EVIDENCE.*
Inside were three files.
The first contained financial records.
The second contained medical documents.
The third was a video.
I clicked it.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
He looked exhausted, but his voice was steady.
"Nia, if you've reached this recording, then Arthur has finally told you what happened.""
He paused.
"There's one thing I need you to understand. None of this was your fault.""
I began crying.
Daniel continued.
"I discovered the clinic's records after Lily was born. I thought someone had made a mistake. Then I found evidence that the procedure had been deliberately arranged.""
He leaned closer.
"Vanessa wasn't the only person involved. Someone paid the clinic to alter the records. Someone arranged for Ethan's material to be used in the first pregnancy. And someone arranged for Vanessa's material to be used in the second.""
I looked at Arthur.
He was staring at the screen.
Daniel continued.
"That person wanted to create a family without anyone knowing the truth.""
He paused.
"At first, I believed it was Ethan.""
A document appeared.
A transfer authorization.
A signature.
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"But the money didn't come from Ethan.""
I leaned toward the laptop.
The bank account belonged to a trust established twenty years earlier.
The beneficiary was Margaret Whitmore.
I turned toward her.
She looked horrified.
"No," she whispered.
Daniel continued.
"Mom, if you're watching this, I'm sorry. I know you believed you were protecting the children. But you were the one who authorized the original transfer.""
Margaret sank into a chair.
Arthur looked at her.
"Margaret?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know.""
Daniel's voice continued.
"You arranged for the first baby to be placed with Vanessa. You knew Ethan's material had been used. You also knew about the second procedure. You thought you could keep everyone together by hiding the truth.""
I stared at my mother-in-law.
"You did this?""
Margaret began crying.
"I was trying to protect Daniel.""
"From what?""
She looked at me.
"From his brother.""
Then she said something that made the entire room freeze.
"Ethan wasn't the only twin.""
Arthur slowly stood.
"Margaret...""
She covered her mouth.
"There were three babies.""
I stared at her.
"Triplets?""
She nodded.
"Daniel, Ethan, and a third child.""
Emily whispered, "Where is the third one?""
Margaret looked toward the laptop.
Daniel's recording had reached its final seconds.
He leaned toward the camera.
"Nia, the third child is the person who has been helping Ethan.""
The screen went black.
A new message appeared on the laptop.
*VIDEO FILE CORRUPTED.*
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in years.
My mother's old number.
I answered slowly.
Nobody spoke at first.
Then a familiar woman's voice whispered:
"Nia, sweetheart. If you can hear me, don't trust Arthur.""
My knees nearly gave way.
It was my mother.
The woman I had buried four years ago.
May you like
And before I could say a word, she added:
"Your husband didn't die in that accident. He's still alive.""
