Chapter 5 - The Family That Protected The LieNathan had spent his entire life believing family was the one thing money could never buy.

He was wrong.
Sometimes family was the easiest place to hide betrayal.
His uncle Richard Carter had been his father’s closest partner.
After his father died, Richard became the person Nathan trusted most.
He advised him.
Helped him expand the company.
Attended every important family event.
He was the man who stood beside Nathan at Claire’s funeral.
The man who placed a hand on Nathan’s shoulder and said:
“Some things happen for reasons we’ll never understand.”
Nathan remembered those words now.
And they sounded different.
Not comforting.
Calculated.
The next morning, Nathan met Daniel.
“Tell me everything.”
Daniel opened a file.
“Richard controlled several investment accounts after your father’s death.”
“How much?”
“Approximately forty million dollars.”
Nathan frowned.
“That’s normal.”
“Yes.”
Daniel turned the page.
“Except thirty percent of those accounts were moved through shell companies connected to Vanessa’s family.”
Nathan stared.
“So Richard and Vanessa were working together.”
“Looks that way.”
Nathan leaned back.
“But why Claire?”
Daniel looked serious.
“Because Claire found out.”
He placed another document down.
A company audit.
Claire’s signature was on it.
“She discovered money missing from your company.”
Nathan looked through the pages.
“She was going to expose them.”
“Yes.”
“And they killed her.”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
That silence was enough.
Nathan looked away.
Because saying it out loud made it real.
Claire wasn’t unlucky.
She wasn’t a victim of bad weather.
She was a threat.
A threat someone removed.
That afternoon, Nathan returned home.
Vanessa was in the kitchen.
Cooking.
Like nothing had changed.
She smiled when she saw him.
“You’re home early.”
Nathan looked at her.
The same words.
The same tone.
But now he saw everything differently.
“How long?”
Vanessa froze.
“What?”
“How long did you know Claire found out?”
The color disappeared from her face.
Nathan watched carefully.
A guilty person often answered before thinking.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Wrong answer.
Not denial.
Confusion.
Nathan walked closer.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Vanessa put down the knife.
“Nathan…”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“Today you listen.”
She stared.
“Claire knew about the money.”
Silence.
“She found the transfers.”
Silence.
“She recorded a message before she died.”
Vanessa’s eyes changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Nathan noticed.
“You knew about the recording.”
“No.”
“You knew she had evidence.”
“No.”
“You’re lying.”
Vanessa stepped back.
“You don’t understand.”
Nathan almost smiled.
“That’s what everyone says when they know they’ve been caught.”
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
“I didn’t kill Claire.”
Nathan stopped.
Because he had not asked that.
He only said she knew.
But Vanessa had answered a different question.
Nathan stared.
“Why did you say that?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
She realized her mistake.
Nathan whispered:
“Because nobody accused you yet.”
The room became silent.
Then Vanessa started crying.
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
“Of Richard.”
Nathan froze.
“What?”
“He told me Claire was dangerous.”
Nathan stared.
Vanessa continued.
“He said if Claire exposed everything, everyone would lose.”
“Everyone?”
“My family.”
“Your family?”
Vanessa nodded.
Then whispered:
“I thought they were only going to scare her.”
Nathan felt sick.
“You knew.”
“I didn’t know they would—”
“Stop.”
His voice broke.
“You knew enough.”
Vanessa cried.
“I wanted her out of my life.”
There it was.
The truth.
Not innocence.
Not misunderstanding.
A choice.
Nathan looked at her.
“You helped them.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her answer was quiet.
“Because I wanted your life.”
Nathan stared.
“What?”
“I wanted your family. Your money. Your company.”
She wiped her tears.
“I thought if Claire was gone, you would finally choose me.”
Nathan felt nothing.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Only disappointment.
Then Vanessa said:
“But Richard was lying to all of us.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Her face changed.
“Richard never planned to let me become part of your family.”
A pause.
“He planned to take everything.”
Nathan’s phone suddenly rang.
Daniel.
Nathan answered.
His voice was cold.
“What happened?”
Daniel replied:
“Nathan, we found the original accident report.”
“And?”
“It was changed.”
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“Who changed it?”
Daniel paused.
Then said:
“The officer who changed it was paid by Richard Carter.”
Nathan closed his eyes.

The truth was finally coming out.
And this time, nobody could bury it.
