Chapter 8 - Vanessa’s Final ConfessionThe evidence was overwhelming.

But the prosecutor wanted one final thing.
The truth directly from Vanessa.
She called her to the stand.
Nathan watched her walk forward.
For years, he had watched this woman enter rooms with confidence.
Now she looked terrified.
“Mrs. Carter.”
“Yes.”
“Did you love Nathan?”
Vanessa looked surprised.
The question was unexpected.
After a long pause, she answered:
“Yes.”
The prosecutor nodded.
“Then why did you help destroy his life?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn’t think it would go that far.”
Nathan felt something inside him break.
Not because he believed her.
Because he realized that was exactly how people justified terrible choices.
They never imagined the ending.
Only the next step.
The prosecutor continued.
“Did you know Claire discovered the financial fraud?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Richard planned to remove Claire from Nathan’s life?”
Vanessa became silent.
The courtroom waited.
Finally:
“Yes.”
A wave moved through the room.
Reporters started writing.
The prosecutor stepped closer.
“Did you know the car would be damaged?”
Vanessa started crying.
“I knew something would happen.”
Nathan looked away.
That answer was enough.
The prosecutor continued.
“Did you try to stop it?”
No answer.
“Mrs. Carter?”
Vanessa whispered:
“No.”
The courtroom went silent.
Nathan closed his eyes.
Six years.
Six years waiting for someone to admit the truth.
And now she finally did.
The prosecutor asked:
“Why?”
Vanessa looked toward Nathan.
“Because I hated feeling like I was always second.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Second?”
“To Claire.”
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“She was the woman everyone loved. The perfect wife. The perfect mother.”
Her voice cracked.
“I thought if she disappeared, I would finally matter.”
Nathan shook his head slowly.
Because that was the tragedy.
Vanessa wanted Claire’s place.
But she destroyed the very thing that made Claire special.
After Vanessa finished testifying, Nathan left the courtroom.
Reporters followed.
“Mr. Carter!”
“Do you have a statement?”
Nathan stopped.
For months, people had expected anger.
A billionaire demanding revenge.
A powerful man destroying his enemies.
Instead, Nathan said:
“I spent six years looking for the person who took my wife from me.”
He looked toward the courthouse.

“But the hardest truth was realizing how many people helped hide it.”
Then he walked away.
