Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the Gold Chandeliers

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Jordan stood frozen at the altar, his white tuxedo immaculate beneath the chandeliers. Elijah remained beside Attorney Harris, still holding the small wedding gift that suddenly seemed almost absurd in the middle of the unfolding scandal.

The guests watched in complete silence.

Jordan finally reached for the document.

“Let me see that,” he said.

Attorney Harris slid the ownership record across the altar table.

Jordan picked it up with both hands. His eyes raced over the official seals, the property identification number, and the name printed beneath the word OWNER.

Elijah Bennett.

“No,” Jordan murmured.

“This can't be right.””

The fake father stepped between Jordan and the document.

“Of course it can be explained,” he announced, turning toward the guests.

“Property records can be complicated. People misunderstand these things all the time.””

Attorney Harris remained composed.

“Would you like me to explain this particular record?””

The man hesitated.

Jordan looked at the attorney.

“Who are you, exactly?””

“Your mother's attorney for twenty-six years,” Harris replied.

“And the executor of several instructions she left concerning your family.””

Jordan's face tightened at the mention of his mother.

“My mother died six years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And now you show up at my wedding with some document claiming my father owns this entire building?””

“I didn't create the document, Mr. Bennett. I was instructed to deliver it.””

Jordan looked back at Elijah.

“Dad, why didn't you tell me?””

Elijah lowered his eyes toward the wrapped gift.

“You never asked me about a ballroom.””

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Jordan's jaw tightened.

“That isn't fair.””

Elijah's expression remained gentle, but his voice trembled.

“Isn't it?””

The question landed harder than a shout.

Jordan turned away, rubbing his forehead. His bride, standing beside him in an elegant white gown, took a cautious step closer.

“Jordan,” she whispered, “what's going on?””

“I don't know,” he snapped.

She recoiled slightly.

The fake mother seized the opportunity.

“Sweetheart, you don't have to entertain this,” she told Jordan.

“We've been here for you. We raised you into the man you are today.””

Attorney Harris looked at her.

“Did you?””

The woman's smile disappeared.

The fake father stepped forward again, placing himself squarely between Elijah and the altar.

“Listen carefully,” he said.

“We were invited here as Jordan's parents. We have supported him through every important milestone. This man appears without warning, wearing clothes that suggest he hasn't prepared for the occasion, and suddenly we're expected to believe he owns a luxury property?””

Elijah glanced down at his coat.

He brushed a speck of dust from one sleeve.

“I came to give my son a present,” he said.

The fake father laughed.

“A present? That's your defense?””

“No,” Elijah answered softly.

“It's simply why I came.””

Jordan looked at the little package for the first time.

“What did you bring?””

Elijah hesitated before holding it out.

“A watch. It belonged to your grandfather.””

Jordan stared at the worn paper and carefully tied ribbon.

“Dad, this is not the time.””

Elijah's hand slowly lowered.

Attorney Harris closed the folder halfway.

“Mr. Bennett, your wife anticipated that there might be questions about your son's understanding of the family's circumstances. She left additional instructions.””

Jordan immediately looked up.

“Additional instructions?””

“Yes.””

“What instructions?””

“Not until the first document has been acknowledged.””

Jordan frowned.

“Acknowledged by whom?””

“By you.””

The groom looked around the ballroom. Hundreds of eyes seemed fixed on him. His bride's expression had changed from confusion to embarrassment, and the couple he had introduced as his parents were now standing rigidly beside the front row.

Jordan swallowed.

“Fine. I acknowledge that the document says my father owns this ballroom. Now can we stop?””

Attorney Harris studied him.

“You acknowledge the words. That isn't necessarily the same as understanding them.””

The fake mother grabbed the attorney's sleeve.

“This is cruel,” she hissed.

“You're humiliating a groom on his wedding day.””

Harris gently removed her hand.

“Madam, I have followed the instructions of a deceased client. Nothing more.””

Jordan turned sharply toward Elijah.

“Why did you let me believe you had nothing?””

Elijah's eyes filled again.

“I never told you I had nothing.””

“You never told me you had this!””

“Because I wanted you to know who I was without knowing what I owned.””

The room fell silent once more.

Jordan looked almost offended.

“That makes no sense.””

“Perhaps not to you,” Elijah said.

For the first time, something harder entered the old man's voice.

“When your mother was alive, we agreed that the things we possessed should never determine how our son treated people.””

Jordan shook his head.

“You and Mom always made everything a lesson.””

“And you always believed lessons were punishments.””

Jordan opened his mouth, then closed it.

Attorney Harris removed another sheet from the folder but kept it beneath his hand.

“The property record is authentic,” he said.

“However, ownership is not the only matter your mother wanted addressed today.””

The fake father went pale.

The fake mother turned toward him so quickly that her earrings swung against her neck.

Jordan noticed.

His gaze narrowed.

“What does he mean by that?””

Neither fake parent answered.

Attorney Harris looked directly at Jordan.

“Before I proceed, I need to ask you one question.””

Jordan's fingers tightened around the ownership record.

“What?””

“Who introduced these two people to you?””

Jordan glanced toward the couple.

The fake mother forced a smile.

“Jordan, darling, you know us.””

But the groom no longer looked reassured.

He looked frightened.

Because for the first time since the ceremony began, he realized that the attorney might not be the only person in the room who knew a secret.

And when Attorney Harris opened the folder again, a second sealed envelope slid into view.

May you like

Jordan recognized the handwriting on its front immediately.

It was his mother's.
