Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Fake Father
“Marcus Reed.””
Attorney Harris repeated the name, and the fake father took another step backward.
Jordan stared at him.
“That's your name?””
The man swallowed.
“It's a common name.””
“Your name is Marcus Reed?””
The fake mother seized his arm.
“Marcus, don't answer that.””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Jordan turned toward her slowly.
“Marcus?””
She released the man's arm as if it had burned her.
Around the ballroom, guests began whispering. The bride stood beside Jordan with one hand pressed against her mouth, while a photographer lowered his camera and quietly stepped away from the altar.
Attorney Harris placed the letter beside the property record.
“Mr. Reed, Mrs. Bennett anticipated that you might attempt to leave before this conversation concluded.””
Marcus straightened his expensive suit.
“This is harassment. I was invited here by Jordan himself.””
“Then you should have no difficulty explaining your relationship with him.””
“I don't have to explain anything to you.””
“No,” Harris replied.
“But you may have to explain why you accepted payment to impersonate his father.””
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Jordan's face went rigid.
“What did you just say?””
Marcus looked toward the nearest exit.
Attorney Harris removed a thin document from the folder.
“Three weeks ago, an account associated with a company called Sterling Family Consulting received a payment of twelve thousand dollars. The payment description stated that the recipient would attend this wedding and represent himself as Jordan Bennett's father.””
Jordan stared at the paper.
“Who paid him?””
Harris did not answer immediately.
Marcus pointed at the attorney.
“That document proves nothing. Consulting firms receive money for all kinds of services.””
“Indeed,” Harris said.
“Which is why the payment record is only one piece of evidence.””
The fake mother began shaking her head.
“Jordan, sweetheart, please. We can talk about this privately.””
Jordan looked at her.
“You called me sweetheart yesterday. You told me you remembered the day I was born.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to make you feel loved.””
“You told me you held me when I was a baby.””
“I wanted you to feel that you had a family.””
Jordan stepped away from her.
“Did you even know my birthday?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Elijah closed his eyes.
He had imagined a hundred different ways his son might discover the truth about the ballroom. He had imagined anger, disbelief, even accusations.
He had never wanted Jordan to discover the truth about his own wedding while hundreds of people watched.
“Please,” Elijah said quietly.
“Let's not turn this into something cruel.””
Marcus seized on the words.
“You hear that?”” he said, addressing the guests.
“The old man wants everyone to stop. Perhaps we should all return to celebrating.””
But Attorney Harris didn't move.
“Mr. Bennett, your wife left a separate instruction concerning the individuals who would occupy the front row.””
Marcus's expression changed.
Jordan noticed.
“What instruction?””
Harris turned another page.
“Your mother requested that I verify the identities of anyone introduced as your parents before the ceremony concluded.””
Jordan frowned.
“Why would she ask that?””
“Because six months before her death, she received information suggesting that someone might eventually attempt to influence your understanding of your family's wealth.””
Elijah's head snapped up.
“Harris, you never told me that.””
“Your wife instructed me to disclose it only if the conditions in her letter were met.””
Marcus laughed nervously.
“This is insane. Dead people cannot control living people through letters.””
“No,” Harris replied.
“But evidence can establish what living people have done.””
He opened a second document.
“Marcus Reed, age fifty-six. Formerly employed as a private security consultant. No familial relationship to Jordan Bennett.””
Jordan looked at the fake mother.
“And you?””
She stared at the floor.
“Denise Carter,” Harris continued.
“No familial relationship to Jordan Bennett.””
Jordan gripped the edge of the altar table.
“You came here pretending to be my parents.””
Denise began crying.
“We thought we were helping you.””
“Helping me do what?””
Marcus answered too quickly.
“Protect your reputation.””
The words hung in the air.
Jordan stared at him.
“Protect my reputation from my own father?””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“You told us you needed respectable parents for the wedding. You said your business partners would be there. You said the people you wanted to impress expected a certain kind of family.””
“I never told you to lie about being related to me.””
“You didn't have to!””
The shout echoed beneath the chandeliers.
Marcus immediately looked around, realizing how many people had heard him.
Jordan's bride took a step away from the altar.
“You hired them?”” she asked.
“No,” Jordan said quickly.
“I hired an event consultant. I never knew they would—”
Attorney Harris interrupted.
“The records indicate that the original inquiry was made under your email address.””
Jordan went silent.
The attorney slid a printed page toward him.
Jordan recognized the subject line.
Wedding Family Presentation — Private Arrangement.
His own signature appeared at the bottom.
The bride covered her mouth.
“You told me your parents were coming from out of state,” she whispered.
Jordan stared at the page.
“I thought they were professional hosts. People who would help with introductions. I didn't know they would pretend to be my family.””
Marcus shook his head bitterly.
“You knew exactly what you wanted. You wanted two polished people sitting in the front row while your real father stayed out of sight.””
Elijah flinched.
Jordan slammed the paper onto the table.
“Shut up!””
Marcus fell silent.
For the first time, the groom's anger seemed directed at himself.
He looked toward Elijah.
“Dad, I didn't know they would say those words.””
Elijah's eyes remained fixed on the wrapped gift.
“But you stood there while they did.””
Jordan's shoulders sagged.
“I panicked.””
“You had a microphone in your hand, son. You could have corrected them.””
Jordan couldn't answer.
Attorney Harris gathered the documents into a neat stack.
“There is still one matter we haven't addressed.””
Marcus backed away.
“No. We're done here.””
Harris looked toward the ballroom doors.
“Security has already been informed that no one should interfere with the proceedings.””
Two venue security officers approached, remaining several feet from Marcus and Denise.
Jordan stared at the attorney.
“What else did my mother leave?””
Harris lifted the photograph of Elijah and his late wife.
“Your mother didn't merely leave you a letter. She established a condition concerning the ownership of this property and the person she believed should eventually inherit it.””
Jordan's face tightened.
“I'm her son.””
“Yes,” Harris replied.
“Which is why the condition concerns you.””
He placed a final sealed envelope on the altar.
Jordan recognized his mother's handwriting again.
But this time, the envelope bore three words.
*OPEN ONLY TOGETHER.*
Harris looked at Elijah, then at Jordan.
“Your mother required both of you to open this one.””
And as Elijah slowly reached for the envelope, Marcus Reed whispered something that made Denise seize his wrist.

“Don't let him open that,” Marcus muttered.
“If he reads what's inside, he'll discover who hired us.””
