Chapter 2: The Secret I Carried Alone

For five years, I had imagined what would happen if Daniel ever discovered the truth.

Sometimes I imagined him apologizing.

Sometimes I imagined him begging for another chance.

And sometimes, on the darkest nights, I imagined him standing in front of me exactly as he was now.

Confused.

Angry.

Demanding answers he had never earned the right to demand.

I hadn't expected him to ask why I hadn't told him.

Not after the way he had left.

"Michael," I said quietly, "please take Lily to my office.""

Michael immediately stepped forward.

"Of course, Ms. Carter.""

Lily tightened her arms around my neck.

"But Mommy, I want to stay with you.""

"I know, sweetheart. Michael has the drawing paper you wanted. Why don't you show him your new picture?""

She glanced at Daniel again.

"Is he a friend?""

I brushed a curl away from her forehead.

"No, baby. He's someone Mommy used to know.""

Daniel flinched.

Lily nodded and followed Michael through the kitchen doors.

Only after she disappeared did I turn back toward my ex-husband.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" he repeated.

I stared at him.

"Do you remember the last night we spent together?""

He frowned.

"Of course I do.""

"Do you?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Daniel, I really think we should leave.""

He didn't acknowledge her.

"Amara, answer me.""

I let out a slow breath.

"You filed for divorce on a Tuesday. You remember that?""

His jaw tightened.

"I remember.""

"You brought the papers home while I was working on a business proposal. You said you couldn't spend another year watching me chase a fantasy.""

"I was frustrated.""

"You told me you wanted a woman who understood success.""

"That was five years ago.""

"And you told me I was never going to be successful.""

He looked away.

I continued.

"You said you didn't want children with someone who couldn't even support herself.""

His face changed.

"Amara...""

"Then you left.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"Okay, I understand you two have history, but this is getting ridiculous. If there's a child involved, we should discuss this privately.""

I turned toward her.

"You wanted a private table. Congratulations. You have one.""

Her cheeks flushed.

Daniel reached for my arm.

I stepped away.

"Don't touch me.""

He lowered his hand.

"Was she born after the divorce?""

I looked at him.

"Three months after.""

He stared at me.

"Three months?""

"Yes.""

His lips parted.

"Then you knew when we signed the papers?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Because that was the part I had never told anyone.

Not even my closest friends.

Five years earlier, I had discovered I was pregnant two days after Daniel announced he wanted a divorce.

I had been standing in our bathroom, holding a pregnancy test, while the shower ran in the background.

Two pink lines.

I had sat on the cold floor for nearly an hour.

Then I had called Daniel.

He didn't answer.

I called again.

And again.

Finally, he sent a message.

I'm busy. Whatever it is, talk to me tomorrow.

I tried to wait.

I genuinely did.

But the next evening, he came home carrying divorce papers.

And he wasn't alone.

Vanessa was with him.

She stood in my living room wearing a cream-colored coat, holding a folder against her chest.

Daniel placed the papers on the coffee table.

"Sign them, Amara. Let's not make this uglier than it needs to be.""

I stared at him.

"Can we talk first?""

"We've talked enough.""

"There's something I need to tell you.""

He checked his watch.

"Not tonight.""

Vanessa looked around our apartment.

"Daniel, the movers are waiting.""

I glanced at her.

"The movers?""

Daniel sighed.

"I'm taking my things.""

I felt my hand move instinctively toward my stomach.

"Daniel, please. Just give me five minutes.""

He picked up his suitcase.

"Amara, I'm done.""

And then he walked out.

I never told him about the pregnancy.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Not because I wanted to keep his child from him.

I simply couldn't imagine raising a baby with a man who had already made it clear that neither of us mattered to him.

Back in the restaurant, Daniel was staring at me.

"You knew?"" he whispered.

"Yes.""

His expression twisted.

"You knew I had a daughter and you never told me?""

I gave a bitter laugh.

"You had a daughter before she was even born. You just didn't care enough to stay long enough to find out.""

"That's not fair.""

"Fair?""

My voice rose for the first time.

"You left me with divorce papers and a suitcase in the hallway. You didn't ask where I would go. You didn't ask how I would pay the bills. You didn't even ask whether I had eaten.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I didn't know you were pregnant.""

"You didn't want to know anything about me.""

Vanessa placed her handbag on the table.

"Daniel, this is insane. You're allowing her to manipulate you.""

He finally turned toward her.

"Please don't.""

She blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"I said don't.""

It was the first time I had ever heard him speak to Vanessa that way.

But I felt no satisfaction.

Not anymore.

Daniel looked back at me.

"Does she know who I am?""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because she has a father.""

His eyebrows drew together.

"Who?""

I folded my arms.

"His name is David.""

Daniel looked genuinely stunned.

"David?""

"My father. He's been the person Lily calls Dad since she learned to speak.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's not what I meant.""

"I know exactly what you meant.""

He lowered his voice.

"Amara, I'm her biological father.""

"Biology doesn't tuck a child into bed. Biology doesn't sit beside a hospital bed at three in the morning. Biology doesn't learn how to braid her hair because she wants to look like a princess for school.""

Daniel looked down.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he asked, "Can I see her?""

"No.""

"Please.""

"No.""

"Just five minutes.""

I shook my head.

"You don't get to walk into her life because you suddenly recognize your own eyes.""

Vanessa grabbed her coat.

"Daniel, we're leaving.""

He ignored her again.

"Amara, I want a DNA test.""

I stared at him.

"You're welcome to request one through the proper legal channels.""

His expression tightened.

"You'd make me take you to court?""

"You were perfectly comfortable taking me to court when you wanted a divorce.""

He looked as though I had slapped him.

I turned toward the kitchen.

Michael was waiting near the office door.

"Is Lily okay?"" I asked.

"She's drawing with the pastry team. She seems happy.""

"Good.""

Then I noticed the little pink backpack sitting on the office chair.

A folded sheet of paper stuck out of its side.

Lily's drawing.

I walked over and pulled it out.

It showed three people holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

One woman with long brown hair.

One little girl.

And an older man with gray hair.

Above them, in uneven letters, Lily had written:

MY FAMILY.

I smiled despite the tightness in my chest.

Then Michael approached.

"Ms. Carter, there's something else.""

"What?""

He lowered his voice.

"Mr. Carter has been asking the hostess questions about you.""

I frowned.

"What questions?""

"He wanted to know whether you were married again. Whether the company was yours. And whether Lily attends the school listed on her backpack.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did anyone answer him?""

"No. But there's more.""

Michael handed me a small white envelope.

It had been left with the hostess while Daniel was waiting for his reservation.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it.

Inside was a business card and a handwritten note.

Amara, we need to talk about something that happened five years ago. Something Daniel doesn't know.

The name on the business card made my blood run cold.

*Rebecca Shaw.*

Daniel's mother.

I turned the card over.

There was a handwritten phone number and one sentence.

Your daughter may be in danger if you don't hear the truth.

I looked toward the dining room.

Daniel and Vanessa were gone.

May you like

But the envelope remained in my hand.

And suddenly, the past I thought I had buried was beginning to look very different.
