Chapter 8: The Night Everything Disappeared

I didn't sleep.

At 6:00 a.m., I was sitting in my kitchen with Daniel's confession still echoing in my head.

I was at the hospital.

For five years, I had believed he hadn't known about Lily's birth.

I had imagined him celebrating somewhere with Vanessa while I struggled through labor alone.

I remembered the fluorescent lights.

The cold hospital bed.

The nurse asking whether someone was coming to support me.

I had said no.

I remembered gripping the side rail when the contractions became unbearable.

I remembered calling my father and hearing him tell me to breathe.

And now Daniel was telling me he had been there.

At 8:15, he arrived at my office.

I had agreed to meet him only because Jonathan and Martin were present.

Daniel looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes.

He sat across from me.

"I should have told you.""

I didn't answer.

Jonathan opened his notebook.

"Start from the beginning.""

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

"Five years ago, I received a call from my mother. She told me Amara was in labor.""

I stared at him.

"How did she know?""

"She said someone from the hospital contacted her.""

"Did you know I was pregnant?""

He looked down.

"Yes.""

My throat tightened.

"When?""

"Three days before Lily was born.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Three days?""

"I received a message from my mother. She told me you were about to have a baby and that I needed to stay away.""

"Why?""

"She said you had threatened to use the child to force me back into the marriage.""

I stared at him.

"Did you believe her?""

He hesitated.

"At the time, yes.""

"Then why go to the hospital?""

His eyes lifted.

"Because I wanted to see whether the baby was mine.""

I felt something break inside me.

"You came to the hospital to check whether your daughter belonged to you?""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I know how terrible that sounds.""

"It sounds exactly like you.""

Jonathan interrupted.

"Continue.""

Daniel took a breath.

"My mother arranged for me to enter through a private entrance. She said you were in another wing and that she would handle everything.""

"Did you see Lily?""

"No.""

"Did you see me?""

"No.""

"Then what did you do?""

"I waited in a private room.""

He swallowed.

"Vanessa was there.""

I froze.

"Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"She told me she was helping my mother.""

"Helping her with what?""

He hesitated.

Then he said, "Vanessa was pregnant.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth I had been afraid to hear.

Daniel continued.

"She had told me she was pregnant months earlier. I thought she had lost the baby, but my mother said the child had survived.""

I stared at him.

"You knew Vanessa was pregnant?""

"Yes.""

"While you were still married to me?""

He nodded.

I stood and walked toward the window.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I turned.

"So while I was giving birth to your daughter, you were waiting in another room with your mistress.""

Daniel flinched.

"I didn't know you were in the hospital at the same time.""

I laughed.

"That makes it better?""

"No.""

"What happened next?""

He looked at Jonathan.

"My mother told me Vanessa had delivered a healthy baby girl. She said the child needed protection because Vanessa wasn't ready to raise her.""

I felt cold.

"Protection from whom?""

"From the media, the family, everything. My mother said the baby would be raised privately until the trust situation was settled.""

Jonathan leaned forward.

"What trust situation?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"My father had changed his will. I didn't know the full details, but I knew a grandchild would receive a substantial inheritance.""

"And you thought Vanessa's baby was entitled to it?""

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"Did you see the baby?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. My mother said the doctors wouldn't allow visitors.""

Martin opened his folder.

"Mr. Carter, did you sign any documents that night?""

Daniel looked up.

"Yes.""

"What documents?""

"A hospital authorization form. My mother said it was necessary to protect the baby.""

Martin slid a copy across the table.

"Is this your signature?""

Daniel studied it.

"Yes.""

The document was a parental consent form.

But there was something unusual about it.

The child listed was not identified by Vanessa's name.

Instead, the mother was recorded as an unknown patient.

And the guardian was listed as Daniel Carter.

I stared at the paper.

"Why would you sign this?""

Daniel looked shaken.

"I was told it was temporary.""

Martin pointed to the final paragraph.

"Mr. Carter, this document authorizes the transfer of a newborn to a private guardian.""

Daniel swallowed.

"I didn't know.""

Jonathan closed his notebook.

"Who received the child?""

Daniel looked at me.

"My mother.""

I felt my stomach drop.

Rebecca had taken the baby.

But where?

Martin placed another document on the table.

"This is a transfer authorization from St. Mary's. The receiving party was Margaret Collins.""

Daniel stared.

"Who is that?""

"We're trying to find out.""

I looked at the photograph from the previous night.

"Could Margaret Collins have been a nanny?""

Martin shook his head.

"She was registered as a private caregiver, but her identity appears to have been established using a false address.""

Jonathan looked at me.

"Amara, we need to consider the possibility that the children were deliberately separated.""

I sat down.

"Why would someone do that?""

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel spoke.

"My mother said Vanessa's baby was the only child born that night.""

I turned toward him.

"She told you that?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did the records show two babies?""

Daniel stared at the table.

"I don't know.""

Martin gathered the documents.

"I have requested the original neonatal records and will contact the hospital's former staff.""

I looked at him.

"Find the nurse who signed the birth register.""

"Already working on it.""

After the meeting, Daniel followed me into the hallway.

"Amara.""

I stopped.

"Please, just listen.""

I turned.

He looked genuinely broken.

"I didn't know what my mother was doing. I swear.""

"You knew Vanessa was pregnant. You knew I was pregnant. You went to the hospital and signed documents you didn't understand.""

"I was stupid.""

"You were selfish.""

He lowered his eyes.

I continued.

"And now two children may have been separated because you trusted your mother more than you trusted the woman you married.""

He didn't argue.

For once, he had nothing to say.

That afternoon, Martin called.

"I found the nurse.""

I sat upright.

"Where?""

"She lives in Connecticut. Her name is Patricia Evans. She worked at St. Mary's for twenty-three years.""

"Can she tell us what happened?""

"She agreed to speak with us.""

"When?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

I closed my eyes.

"Thank you.""

Martin paused.

"Amara, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Patricia remembers the night very clearly. She says the second baby was not Vanessa's.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"She says the baby belonged to you.""

I gripped the phone.

"Then whose baby did Vanessa give birth to?""

Martin lowered his voice.

"That's what Patricia wants to tell you in person.""

May you like

Then he added:

"She also says Rebecca came back to the hospital two days later and ordered a second set of birth records destroyed.""
