Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in the Ashes
Caleb held the broken wooden airplane in his hand.
For a moment, he couldn’t move.
The toy had taken him back to another life.
A life where his biggest worry was whether Mason would eat his vegetables.
A life where the word “prison” belonged only to movies.
A life where he believed his family was safe.
Now someone had taken the one thing his son loved and turned it into a message.
A warning.
A threat.
Rachel looked around the room.
“Everyone stay together.””
Victor glanced toward the hallway.
“Too late.””
Caleb looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Victor didn’t answer.
He walked toward the front door and examined the lock.
Nobody followed.
Nobody spoke.
Then Victor pointed.
“The door was never forced.””
Rachel frowned.
“What?””
“Whoever came in had a key.””
Caleb felt his stomach drop.
Only a few people had keys.
Emma.
Daniel.
Him.
And one more person.
His mind immediately went to Mason.
No.
He pushed the thought away.
Not his son.
Never his son.
Rachel noticed his expression.
“What are you thinking?””
Caleb looked at the empty hallway.
“I’m thinking someone inside this family helped them.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Caleb, no.””
“You kept secrets from me.””
“I did.””
“And Emma lied to me.””
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
“So why should I trust anyone?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
The power suddenly returned.
The lights flickered.
Everyone looked toward the basement.
The safe.
Caleb moved first.
“I need to see what’s inside.””
Victor stepped in front of him.
“No.””
Caleb stopped.
“You don’t tell me what to do.””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“If you open that safe without understanding what’s inside, you could lose the only evidence you have.””
Caleb stared at him.
“You broke into my house, knew my father, and somehow know what’s dangerous. Forgive me if I don’t trust you.””
Victor nodded slowly.
“Fair.””
Rachel looked between them.
“Then what do we do?””
Victor looked at Daniel.
“We ask him.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Victor stepped closer.
“You were there the night Caleb was arrested.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Caleb noticed immediately.
“You were?””
Daniel looked away.
“I told you.””
“You told me you couldn’t stop it.””
“I couldn’t.””
“But you were there.””
A painful silence followed.
Daniel sat down.
The weight of years seemed to collapse onto him.
“Yes.””
Caleb stared.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“I was at the office that night.””
“Why?””
“Because your father asked me to watch something.””
Caleb frowned.
“My father was dead.””
Daniel looked up.
“Not that night.””
The room went quiet.
Caleb’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I mean your father had left instructions before he died. He knew something was wrong with the company. He knew someone was moving money.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Caleb’s voice sharpened.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Victor.
Then away.
“Your father suspected someone in his own family.””
Caleb felt cold.
“My family?””
Daniel nodded.
“He believed someone close to him was involved.””
“Emma?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Caleb closed his eyes.
“Keep going.””
Daniel continued.
“The night you were arrested, I found documents hidden in your office.””
“What documents?””
“Records.””
“Of what?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Payments.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“Payments to whom?””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“To Emma.””
Caleb felt like the floor moved.
“No.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I thought it was proof she was involved.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know who else was watching.””
Caleb’s laugh was bitter.
“So you let me take the fall.””
Daniel looked like he had been waiting years to hear that.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more.
“I thought I could fix it.””
Caleb stared.
“You thought.””
Daniel nodded.
“I was wrong.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Mason’s voice came from the stairs.
“Dad?””
Caleb immediately turned.
The boy was standing there.
He had heard everything.
Caleb’s heart sank.
“Mason…”
The boy looked confused.
“Mom lied?””
No parent should ever have to answer that question.
Especially not after three years apart.
Caleb walked toward him.
“I don’t know everything yet.””
Mason looked down.
“But she said you were bad.””
Caleb knelt.
“Buddy.””
“What if she was right?””
The question was small.
Almost a whisper.
But it cut deeper than anything Emma had done.
Caleb took Mason’s hands.
“Listen to me.””
The boy looked up.
“People can say things about someone.””
A pause.
“But what matters is what they do.””
Mason looked at him.
“I waited.””
Caleb’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You came back.””
“Yes.””
The boy nodded slowly.
“That means something.””
Caleb hugged him.
And for the first time since leaving prison, he allowed himself to believe something.
Maybe Emma had taken years from him.
Maybe she had taken his home.
Maybe she had taken his name.
But she had not taken his son.
Not completely.
A loud crash interrupted them.
Everyone turned.
The sound came from the kitchen.
Victor moved quickly.
Caleb followed.
On the floor was a small metal box.
It had fallen from the ceiling vent.
Rachel picked it up.
“What is this?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
Caleb looked at him.
“You know it?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“It’s your father’s.””
The box was covered in dust.
But the lock was new.
Caleb opened it.
Inside was a single flash drive.
And a note.
His father’s handwriting again.
*If the safe is opened, this is the first thing you need to see.*
Caleb inserted the drive into Rachel’s laptop.
A video appeared.
His father.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting in the same basement.
Caleb stopped breathing.
His father looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then I failed to protect you.””
Caleb sat down.
The video continued.
“I need you to understand something, Caleb.””
His father leaned closer.
“The person who betrayed me was not a stranger.””
A pause.
“It was someone I trusted with my life.””
Caleb looked at Daniel.
Then the video showed something unexpected.
A document.
A signature.
Caleb leaned closer.
Because he recognized the name.
The signature belonged to his father.
But beneath it was another signature.
One he knew.
One he never expected to see.
His own.
Caleb stood suddenly.
“What?””
Rachel froze.
“That’s your signature.””
“No.””
He stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
The video continued.
His father’s voice became quieter.
“You may not remember signing this.””
Caleb felt sick.
“Because you were a child.””
The room went silent.
Mason looked confused.
Rachel paused the video.
“Caleb.””
He didn’t respond.
Because his father’s next words appeared on the screen.
*Your entire life was built on a lie.*
The video resumed.
“I protected you from the truth because I wanted you to have a normal life.””
His father looked directly into the camera.
“But now they know you’re looking.””
A pause.
“Caleb, before you open the safe…”
The screen flickered.
The recording glitched.
Then his father said one final sentence.
“Remember this.””
The image froze.
The audio distorted.
And then:
“Your mother didn’t die because of an accident.””
Caleb stepped closer.
The room held its breath.
The video continued.
“She died because she discovered who you really are.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Then Rachel’s laptop received a notification.
A new file had appeared.
No sender.
No source.
Only a title.
*MASON PARKER — ORIGINAL RECORDS*
Caleb stared.
His son’s name.
Rachel looked at him.
“We need to open it.””
Caleb looked at Mason.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Caleb closed the laptop.
“Not until I know what we’re dealing with.””
Because for the first time, the truth wasn’t just about him.
It was about his son.
Then Victor’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
Caleb watched him.
“Who is it?””
Victor slowly looked up.
His voice was barely a whisper.
“It’s Emma.””
A pause.
“She wants to meet.””
Caleb stared.
“Where?””
Victor turned the phone around.
The message was simple.
*Bring Caleb alone.*
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*Or I tell him what really happened to Mason.*
