Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Caleb Before Caleb Did
Caleb couldn’t move.
The figure standing beneath the warehouse lights looked impossible.
A ghost from a life he barely remembered.
A face buried beneath years of silence.
The man took another step forward.
“Hello, Caleb.””
The voice was older.
Rougher.
But familiar.
Caleb’s mind searched through memories he had not touched in decades.
A backyard.
A broken bicycle.
A man laughing while teaching him how to hold a fishing rod.
Then the memory disappeared.
Because it couldn’t be real.
“You’re dead.””
The man looked down.
“I was supposed to be.””
Emma stood completely still.
Caleb looked at her.
“You knew?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
His anger returned instantly.
“You knew he was alive?””
Emma whispered:
“Caleb…”
“No.””
His voice echoed through the warehouse.
“No more secrets.””
The man watched him carefully.
“My name is Thomas Vale.””
Caleb stared.
The name meant nothing.
Then Emma spoke.
“Your mother’s brother.””
Everything stopped.
Caleb looked at Thomas.
“My uncle?””
Thomas nodded.
“You were too young to remember me.””
Caleb laughed bitterly.
“Apparently I’m too young to remember a lot of things.””
Thomas accepted the anger.
“You have every right.””
Caleb stepped forward.
“You let me believe you were dead?””
“I let everyone believe.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked toward the dark corners of the warehouse.
“Because someone wanted me gone.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Emma.
Then back at Caleb.
“The same person who wanted your mother silent.””
Caleb felt his hands tighten.
“Tell me the truth.””
Thomas nodded.
“That’s why I’m here.””
He placed a worn folder on the table.
The same type of folder everyone seemed to carry around him.
But this one looked different.
Older.
More damaged.
Like it had survived years of hiding.
“Your father and I spent years trying to protect you.””
Caleb frowned.
“My father hated secrets.””
Thomas almost smiled.
“No.””
A pause.
“Your father hated what secrets did to people.””
Caleb said nothing.
Thomas opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Letters.
And one picture that made Caleb stop breathing.
A young woman.
His mother.
Standing beside Thomas.
And beside them…
a baby.
Him.
Caleb touched the photo.
His fingers shook.
“I don’t remember this.””
“You weren’t supposed to.””
Thomas’s voice softened.
“You were only three.””
Caleb looked up.
“Why hide my identity?””
Thomas took a breath.
“Because your mother discovered something dangerous.””
“The company?””
“Partly.””
“Then what?””
Thomas looked at him.
“You.””
The answer felt like a punch.
Caleb shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
“You were born into a family that had been fighting this for generations.””
“What?””
Thomas pointed at the documents.
“Your grandfather created a financial system designed to protect people’s assets during unstable times.””
Caleb frowned.
“That doesn’t sound dangerous.””
“It wasn’t.””
Thomas’s expression darkened.
“Until other people realized they could use it.””
Caleb looked at the papers.
“What system?””
“A hidden network of accounts.””
Rachel’s voice suddenly came through Caleb’s earpiece.
He had forgotten he was still connected.
“Caleb, I’m hearing everything.””
Thomas looked around.
“Rachel?””
Caleb ignored the surprise.
“Keep going.””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father discovered someone inside the company was using those accounts.””
“Emma?””
Emma looked down.
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Caleb looked confused.
“Then who?””
Thomas opened another document.
A signature was visible.
Caleb recognized it.
His chest tightened.
Daniel.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“Daniel was involved.””
Caleb felt betrayed all over again.
“But he helped us.””
“He did.””
The answer surprised him.
“What?””
Thomas sighed.
“Daniel was not the mastermind.””
“Then why hide everything?””
“Because he was scared.””
Caleb thought of Daniel’s face.
The guilt.
The regret.
The years of silence.
Thomas continued.
“Daniel discovered the truth after your father died.””
“And he still let me go to prison.””
“Yes.””
Caleb looked away.
“Why?””
“Because the person controlling everything had evidence against him.””
“Against Daniel?””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked at the floor.
“And against you.””
Caleb frowned.
“What evidence?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“The original birth records.””
The warehouse became silent.
Caleb stared.
“My birth records?””
Thomas nodded.
“The ones proving your father changed your identity.””
“Why would that matter?””
“Because your real identity connects you to everything.””
Caleb’s frustration grew.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He slammed his hand onto the table.
“But nobody tells me what it means.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because your father wanted you to choose.””
“Choose what?””
“Whether you wanted the truth.””
Caleb laughed.
“After everything that happened?””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
A long silence.
Then Caleb looked at Emma.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“You were always afraid.””
“I was.””
The honesty surprised him.
Emma stepped closer.
“I thought I could control the damage.””
“You couldn’t.””
“No.””
She looked at the ground.
“I destroyed everything trying to save it.””
Caleb had expected excuses.
Instead, he saw regret.
It didn’t erase anything.
But it made the betrayal more complicated.
A sound came from outside.
Everyone froze.
Thomas immediately closed the folder.
“We have to leave.””
Caleb looked toward the entrance.
“Who is it?””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“The people who have been searching for this.””
Emma grabbed Caleb’s arm.
“Caleb, listen to me.””
He pulled away.
“No.””
“Please.””
He looked at her.
“Why should I?””
“Because Mason is still in danger.””
The words stopped him.
Thomas looked serious.
“She’s right.””
Caleb’s anger disappeared.
Only one thing remained.
Fear.
“For how long?””
Emma swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
Caleb turned toward the exit.
“I’m going back.””
Thomas grabbed his shoulder.
“No.””
Caleb looked at him.
“Don’t.””
“You don’t understand.””
“My son is there.””
Thomas released him.
“Exactly.””
A pause.
“If they know about Mason, they know about the bloodline.””
Caleb stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Thomas looked at the folder.
“The reason they wanted you gone.””
The warehouse lights flickered.
Again.
Then Rachel’s voice came through the earpiece.
“Caleb.””
Her tone was different.
“What?””
“Someone is at the house.””
His heart stopped.
“Mason?””
“I don’t know.””
“Rachel.””
Silence.
Then:
“Caleb, I lost the camera feed.””
The world narrowed.
“When?””
“Thirty seconds ago.””
Caleb turned toward the door.
“I’m leaving.””
Thomas stepped in front of him.
“Wait.””
“No.””
“You need to know one more thing.””
Caleb looked at him.
“What?””
Thomas opened the folder again.
He pulled out a final document.
A custody record.
Caleb stared.
Because it had Mason’s name on it.
And underneath his son’s name was another name.
A name Caleb had never seen before.
Thomas whispered:
“This is why they were watching your son.””
Caleb looked at the paper.
Then slowly lifted his eyes.
“What does this mean?””
Thomas’s voice became quiet.
“It means Mason is not just your son.””
A pause.
“It means someone changed his records too.””
Caleb felt the ground disappear.
“No.””
Thomas looked toward the warehouse doors.
“They weren’t trying to destroy you.””
“They were trying to find him.””
A car engine roared outside.
Headlights appeared through the broken windows.
Caleb grabbed the folder.
“Where is my son?””
Thomas looked at him.
And said the words that turned Caleb’s fear into something worse.
May you like
“Caleb…”
“They already have him.””
