Chapter 6: The Evidence Diane Tried To Bury
The knock echoed through the house.
Nobody moved.
Not because we didn’t hear it.
Because we all understood what it meant.
The past had found us.
And it was standing on my front porch.
I looked at Ava.
She looked terrified.
Not the kind of fear that came from seeing someone dangerous.
The kind of fear that came from seeing someone who knew your deepest secrets.
Daniel stepped closer to the window.
“It’s him.””
I looked at him.
“You know him?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“His name is Kevin.””
My stomach tightened.
“My cousin Kevin?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
The same cousin who had sat at our birthday table.
The same cousin who had eaten Ava’s food while she stood at the sink.
The same cousin who avoided eye contact when I walked in.
“He was involved?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
Another knock.
This time, Ava flinched.
I walked toward the door.
“Marcus, wait.””
I stopped.
Ava looked at me.
“Don’t let him make you angry.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She swallowed.
“Diane always sends people when she doesn’t want to get her own hands dirty.””
I looked through the window.
Kevin stood outside holding a thick folder.
Not a weapon.
Not anything threatening.
Just paper.
But somehow, it felt heavier than anything else.
I opened the door.
Kevin looked uncomfortable.
He wasn’t the confident man from the dinner table.
His shoulders were low.
His eyes were tired.
“Marcus.””
I stared at him.
“What are you doing here?””
He looked past me.
At Ava.
Then at Daniel.
His face changed.
“I guess she finally told you.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew?””
Kevin looked down.
“I knew some of it.””
A bitter laugh escaped Daniel.
“Some of it?””
I stepped between them.
“Inside.””
Kevin entered quietly.
The moment he saw Diane’s name on my phone screen, his expression changed.
“She called you.””
It wasn’t a question.
I looked at him.
“Several times.””
Kevin nodded.
“She’s probably already preparing her next story.””
Ava crossed her arms.
“Why are you here, Kevin?””
He looked at her.
And for the first time all night, someone from my family looked ashamed.
“I owe you an apology.””
Ava’s expression didn’t change.
“For what?””
Kevin opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Because there were too many answers.
Finally, he said:
“For knowing.””
The words hung in the air.
Ava looked away.
“Knowing what?””
Kevin placed the folder on the table.
“Everything.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What’s in the folder?””
He looked at me.
“Proof.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Proof of what?””
Kevin opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Printed messages.
Photos.
Bank records.
My eyes moved across the pages.
I didn’t understand everything.
But I understood enough.
My mother’s name appeared repeatedly.
Transactions.
Transfers.
Dates.
I picked up one page.
“What am I looking at?””
Kevin took a breath.
“Diane wasn’t just taking money from family accounts.””
He pointed at the documents.
“She was moving it through different people.””
My eyes lifted.
“People like you?””
Kevin looked down.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Ava stared at him.
“You helped her.””
Kevin nodded.
“I did.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Why?””
Kevin sat down slowly.
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone was afraid of her?””
Kevin looked at me.
“Yes.””
That answer bothered me.
Because it meant this wasn’t one person’s mistake.
It was a pattern.
A system built around one person.
“How did she control you?””
Kevin rubbed his hands together.
“She knew things about everyone.””
“Like what?””
“Secrets. Mistakes. Problems.””
He looked at Ava.
“She knew Daniel had been collecting evidence.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She knew?””
Kevin nodded.
“She knew before anyone else.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Then how did she get ahead of you?””
Kevin looked at the folder.
“Because she had help.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Kevin hesitated.
Then looked directly at me.
“Your father.””
The room stopped.
I stared.
“My father?””
Kevin nodded.
“He wasn’t innocent.””
Ava closed her eyes.
Daniel looked away.
I felt like the floor had shifted beneath me.
My father had died years ago.
I had spent my whole life believing he was the calm one.
The reasonable one.
The person who balanced my mother.
“You’re lying.””
Kevin didn’t argue.
Instead, he pulled out another document.
“This is his signature.””
I grabbed the paper.
There it was.
My father’s name.
My hands went cold.
“What did he do?””
Kevin looked at me.
“He helped Diane cover the money trail.””
I couldn’t speak.
Ava stepped closer.
“Marcus…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at the documents.
“No.””
Because accepting it meant accepting that my entire understanding of my childhood was wrong.
My mother wasn’t just difficult.
My father wasn’t just quiet.
They had built something together.
Something that hurt people.
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For being the first person to show you the truth.””
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“Funny.””
Everyone looked at me.
“My whole life, I thought the truth was something my family gave me.””
I looked at the papers.
“Turns out they were the ones hiding it.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Kevin reached into the folder again.
“There’s one more thing.””
Ava immediately looked nervous.
“What?””
Kevin pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
My heart stopped.
It was a picture of Ava.
But not the one Diane sent.
This was different.
Ava was younger.
She was standing outside a hospital.
And beside her was Daniel.
“What is this?””
Kevin looked at Ava.
“She never told you.””
Ava’s face changed.
“Kevin.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Kevin continued.
“Daniel wasn’t the only person Diane tried to destroy.””
Ava closed her eyes.
“Stop.””
But Kevin shook his head.
“She needs to know.””
My voice became quiet.
“Know what?””
Ava looked at me.
Tears formed in her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
She looked at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“That hospital was where my mother died.””
I froze.
“Ava…”
She nodded.
“I never told you the full story.””
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because Diane was there.””
The room became silent.
“She wasn’t just involved with Daniel disappearing.””
Ava looked at me.
“She was involved with my mother’s death.””
My breathing stopped.
“What are you saying?””
Ava wiped her tears.
“I’m saying my mother found out what Diane was doing.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“And she tried to expose her.””
Ava nodded.
“Then everything changed.””
I stared at them.
“How?””
Ava looked at the folder.
“At first, I thought it was an accident.””
Her voice became smaller.
“Everyone told me it was an accident.””
I waited.
“But Daniel didn’t believe that.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I saw the hospital records.””
My heart pounded.
“And?””
He looked toward the front door.
Like he was afraid Diane could somehow hear him.
“And the records were changed.””
Nobody moved.
The impossible suddenly felt possible.
Because that was Diane’s greatest weapon.
Not force.
Not violence.
Control.
Kevin quietly spoke.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then he pulled out one final paper.
A document with a date.
A date from only three months ago.
My eyes narrowed.
“Why is this recent?””
Kevin swallowed.
“Because Diane wasn’t just planning to destroy Daniel’s past.””
He looked at Ava.
“She was planning to destroy your future.””
I picked up the paper.
At the top was a name.
Ava.
And underneath it was a legal document.
A custody agreement.
My hands started shaking.
“She was preparing for what?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
The screen lit up.
Diane.
I answered.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then my mother’s voice came through.
“Marcus.””
I stared at the document.
“Mom.””
Her voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
“You found the folder.””
My blood ran cold.
“How do you know?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Kevin was never on your side.””
I looked at Kevin.
His face changed.
Diane continued.
“And because I need you to understand something.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What?””
Her voice lowered.
“The person you think you’re protecting…”
A pause.
“The person standing beside you…”
I looked at Ava.
“She is the reason your baby is in danger.””
The call ended.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
I didn’t know who was telling the truth.
