Chapter 9: The Man My Father Tried To Hide
The voice outside the house made every person in the room freeze.
“Marcus…”
It wasn’t loud.
It wasn’t threatening.
But I knew that voice.
Not because I had heard it before.
Because I had heard it in my nightmares.
The voice of someone who knew something about my family that I never did.
Daniel moved immediately.
“Stay back.””
He stepped in front of Ava.
Kevin grabbed the flashlight from his phone.
I stood near the window, staring into the darkness.
“Who is out there?””
No answer.
Only silence.
Then a soft knock.
Three slow knocks.
The same rhythm as before.
Ava’s face changed.
“That’s not Diane.””
I looked at her.
“How do you know?””
She whispered:
“Because Diane always wants people to know she’s there.””
The knocking came again.
But this time, the person spoke.
“Marcus, my name is Samuel.””
My heart stopped.
The name from the photograph.
The name Ava had whispered.
I looked down at the picture in my hand.
The man standing beside my father.
The secret everyone had been protecting.
Samuel.
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s him.””
“You know him?””
Daniel nodded.
“I’ve seen him before.””
I opened the door slightly.
Not enough for someone to enter.
Enough to see.
An older Black man stood on the porch.
Maybe late sixties.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
The kind of face that carried years of regret.
His hands were raised.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””
I stared at him.
“How do you know my name?””
A sad smile crossed his face.
“Because I knew your father.””
The words hit me harder than expected.
My father.
A man who had been gone for years.
A man I thought I understood.
Apparently, I didn’t.
I opened the door.
“Come inside.””
Samuel stepped in slowly.
The moment he saw Ava and Daniel, he stopped.
His eyes filled.
“I never thought I’d see both of you together again.””
Ava looked confused.
“Who are you?””
Samuel looked at her.
“I was your father’s closest friend.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“My father?””
Samuel nodded.
“Before everything happened.””
I closed the door.
The room was silent.
I placed the photograph on the table.
“You’re in this picture.””
Samuel looked at it.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He sat down.
“Because your father and I made a mistake.””
Ava crossed her arms.
“What mistake?””
Samuel looked at her.
“The mistake of thinking Diane would stop if we gave her enough chances.””
Nobody spoke.
I sat across from him.
“Start from the beginning.””
Samuel took a deep breath.
“Your father knew about Diane’s actions.””
My chest tightened.
“So Kevin was right.””
Samuel nodded.
“Your father knew.””
“Then why did he help her?””
Samuel looked down.
“Because at first, he thought he could control the situation.””
That sounded exactly like something I would have believed about my father.
“He loved her,” Samuel continued.
“But he also loved doing what was right.””
I looked at the photograph.
“And he chose wrong.””
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“He made a deal with Diane.””
“What kind of deal?””
“He promised he would help her fix things.””
I frowned.
“Fix?””
“Hide the money. Quiet the rumors. Protect the family name.””
My stomach turned.
“And then?””
Samuel looked at Ava.
“Then your mother found out.””
The room went quiet.
Ava’s eyes filled with tears.
“My mother?””
Samuel nodded.
“She was the first person who understood what Diane was doing.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew?””
Samuel looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you stop her?””
That question hit harder than anything else.
Samuel didn’t defend himself.
“I should have.””
Silence.
“I thought I had more time.””
I looked at him.
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
He looked at Ava.
“And your mother paid the price.””
Ava sat down slowly.
I reached for her hand.
She held mine tightly.
“What happened that night?””
Samuel looked at the photograph.
“Your mother planned to meet with us.””
“Us?””
“Me. Your father. Diane.””
My eyes widened.
“A confrontation.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Samuel’s voice became quieter.
“She never made it to that meeting.””
The room felt colder.
“She was taken to the hospital.””
Ava closed her eyes.
“And everyone said it was an accident.””
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.””
“But you don’t believe that.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because before she went to the hospital, she sent me a message.””
“What message?””
Samuel reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old phone.
The screen was cracked.
“I kept it.””
He unlocked it.
A message appeared.
From Ava’s mother.
*If anything happens to me, protect my children. Diane cannot be trusted.*
Ava covered her mouth.
Daniel looked away.
I felt anger rising.
Not explosive anger.
Something deeper.
The kind that came when you realized someone had spent decades getting away with hurting people.
“Why didn’t you show this to anyone?””
Samuel looked at me.
“Because Diane already controlled the story.””
He looked at Kevin.
“And because people who knew the truth were afraid.””
Kevin lowered his head.
I looked at Samuel.
“What happened to my father?””
His expression changed.
“He tried to fix what he had done.””
“How?””
“He collected evidence against Diane.””
My heart raced.
“The evidence Daniel found?””
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“So my father was helping you?””
Daniel looked surprised.
“I never knew.””
“Because Diane made sure you didn’t.””
Samuel looked at me.
“She turned everyone against everyone.””
The pattern was impossible to ignore.
Daniel.
Ava.
Kevin.
My father.
Even me.
Everyone had been isolated.
Everyone had been controlled.
“How did my father die?””
The question escaped before I could stop it.
Samuel looked down.
“I don’t know everything.””
That answer bothered me.
“What do you mean?””
“I know he was afraid.””
“Of Diane?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Samuel hesitated.
“Before he died, he told me something.””
I leaned forward.
“What?””
Samuel looked directly at me.
“He said if anything happened to him, I needed to find you.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
“Because he knew Diane would eventually come after you.””
Ava squeezed my hand.
I looked at Samuel.
“Why now?””
“Because I saw the news.””
“What news?””
“Your family dinner.””
My face tightened.
“You were watching?””
“No.””
He looked at Ava.
“I saw what Diane posted.””
My stomach dropped.
“What did she post?””
Samuel pulled out his phone.
He showed me.
A social media post.
A picture of Diane with a caption about being worried for her grandson.
About protecting her family.
About “concerns” regarding Ava’s behavior.
My hands tightened.
“She’s already telling people her version.””
Samuel nodded.
“She’s preparing everyone before you can speak.””
Ava looked terrified.
“What do we do?””
Nobody answered.
Because for the first time, the enemy wasn’t hiding.
She was moving publicly.
Then Samuel said:
“There is one final piece of evidence.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He reached into his bag.
A small flash drive.
“I found this hidden with your father’s records.””
I stared.
“What’s on it?””
Samuel looked at Ava.
“Everything.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Everything about what?””
Samuel’s face became serious.
“The truth about the night your mother died.””
The room went silent.
I took the flash drive.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
Not Diane.
Someone else.
Someone crying.
“Marcus…”
I stood still.
“Who is this?””
A shaky breath.
Then:
“I’m the person who helped Diane hide the truth.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why are you calling me?””
The woman whispered:
“Because I know where the original hospital records are.””
I looked at Ava.
“Who are you?””
The answer came softly.
And it changed everything.
“I’m your father’s second wife.””
The line went dead.
Nobody moved.
May you like
Because suddenly, the secret wasn’t just from the past.
It was still alive.
