Chapter 5 - VIVIAN TOLD THE COURT WHY SHE HATED EMMA

At plea hearing months later, Vivian spoke.
Not required to explain everything.
But she did.
“I was jealous of a dead woman.”
Silence.
She said Emma’s presence remained everywhere.
Trust.
Photos.
Lily’s memories.
My grief.
“I entered a house where everyone told me Emma was wonderful.”
Then:
“I wanted Lily to need me.”
That was human.
Then:
“When she didn’t, I started treating her grief like disobedience.”
There.
Then Adrian.
He told Vivian she should have legal recognition for labor.
Was that entirely wrong?
No.
Stepparents can do enormous caregiving without authority.
But he monetized grievance.
Vivian said:
“He made me feel like I was being exploited by a child’s trust.”
Then:
“I chose to believe him because it justified what I already felt.”
Good.
Then chain.
She admitted it was intended to scare.
No plan to physically restrain.
Then locks.
Admitted.
Then forged my signature.
Admitted.
Then altered behavioral logs.
Admitted.
Then false statement about Samantha? She knew fake.
Yes.
Then she said:
“I wanted Lily out of house for a while.”
Why?
“Relief.”
And trust control.
“Yes.”
No hiding.
Then judge:
“Did you believe Lily medically required residential care?”
Vivian:
“No.”
There.
That mattered.
She knew.
Then:
“Did you know creating distress could support your narrative?”
“Yes.”
That was deliberate abuse for financial/control purpose.
Then sentence.
Meaningful incarceration? For child endangerment + fraud conspiracy/forgery maybe a few years. We don't need exact.
Restitution.
No fiduciary role involving minors for long term/permanent depending order.
No contact with Lily except future court/therapeutic approval.
Adrian later pleaded/was convicted on financial fraud/forgery use, obstruction, professional misconduct.
License disbarred.
He did not face child abuse as principal because evidence showed he did not direct chain, but his knowingly exploitative scheme mattered.
His firm restitution.
Dr. Crane cleared of conspiracy but center disciplined for accepting questionable consent.
North Lake returned fees.
Then my statement.
I said:
“I want the court to understand Lily was not unstable.”
Then corrected.
“Actually, that is not precise.”
People looked.
“Even if she had been unstable, she still could not be exploited.”
Yes.
Then:
“The fraud was not that she had no struggles. She had grief and fear. The fraud was using those struggles—and creating more—to gain control.”
Important.
Then I admitted:
“I helped create an environment where Vivian’s version reached me first.”
No criminal guilt.
But relational.
Then Samantha testified:
“The trust was designed to make saying no possible.”
Good.
Systems.
Then after sentencing, media called:
BILLIONAIRE FATHER SAVES DAUGHTER’S $10M TRUST.
I hated.
I had not saved first.
Emma’s safeguards did.
Samantha.
Camera.
Lily.
I arrived late.
Statement:
May you like
“The money was not the primary harm.”
Then no more.
