Chapter 6 - LILY DID NOT WANT A NEW MOTHER

People kept suggesting.

My mother.

Friends.

“Eventually you’ll meet someone.”

I shut down.

Not because never.

Because Lily did not need replacement.

She needed father.

Then work.

I reduced travel by half.

Not zero.

First overnight trip came eight months later.

Lily panicked.

“I don’t want you to go.”

I wanted cancel.

Therapist helped plan.

Aunt Anna stayed.

Nanny she knew.

Video calls.

Lily had direct emergency contacts.

She could open every door.

No one had unilateral authority to change therapy/school.

Then I left for one night.

She cried.

I went anyway after reassurance.

I came back.

She ran.

Then said:

“You came back.”

That phrase.

I realized she had stopped believing departures were temporary.

So we practiced ordinary absence.

Not avoidance.

Then trust.

I learned.

Monthly statements.

Independent trustee.

No one routes through spouse.

No family-management fees without competitive review.

No structural change on email-only consent.

At age appropriate, Lily would get beneficiary counsel.

Then I asked Samantha:

“Is all this because I’m untrustworthy?”

She said:

“It’s because everyone is.”

I laughed.

Emma would.

Then old chain evidence eventually released.

What to do?

Police offered property return after case.

I said discard.

Then asked Lily? She was still young; no need burden object.

We disposed.

No shrine.

Then Emma’s room.

Lily chose to repaint when eight.

Not because erasing Mom.

She wanted yellow.

We boxed some photos.

Kept favorites.

Room became art room.

Memory evolves.

Then Vivian letters.

At eight, Lily asked:

“Did she say sorry?”

I said yes.

“Can I read?”

Therapist.

She read.

Stopped halfway.

Then:

“She says she loved me.”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe?”

“I believe she had feelings she called love.”

“Do you?”

“Love should also be safe.”

Good.

Then:

“Do I have to forgive?”

“No.”

Then she finished.

No reply.

At ten, she wrote:

I don’t like what you did. I don’t want to see you yet. I hope you don’t scare kids anymore.

Vivian replied:

I understand. I won’t ask again unless you do.

May you like

Growth.

Then no repeated pressure.
