Chapter 6 - EVELYN FINALLY ADMITTED THE DIAMONDS WERE ABOUT HUMILIATION

During mediated victim-offender statement—not reconciliation—Mom explained necklace choice.

Why diamonds?

They were famous in family.

My grandmother’s necklace.

Worth around $180,000.

Mom wore at weddings.

Claire once declined to borrow.

Why?

Too valuable.

Mom took offense.

She said:

“You think you’re too good for Carter jewelry.”

Claire said:

“No. I don’t want responsibility.”

Mom remembered as rejection.

Then when she needed accusation, necklace felt perfect.

Something emotionally “family.”

If Claire stole it, Mom could frame her as outsider taking Carter legacy.

Then chain.

Why porch?

Because Claire tried to leave with her phone.

Mom blocked.

Claire said:

“I’m calling Daniel.”

Mom grabbed phone.

Claire moved toward side door.

Mom pushed her outside.

There was an old decorative chain used to secure patio furniture? Need plausible chain key by door. She looped around wrist/railing. Horrible.

Not preinstalled prisoner device.

Improvised.

Then she told Claire:

“Sit there until you’re ready to tell truth.”

Claire was under awning but rain blew sideways.

She stood because sitting wet furniture uncomfortable.

Thirty-five+ minutes.

Then Daniel returns.

Mom admitted:

“I thought he’d believe me first.”

Why?

“Because I’m his mother.”

There.

Hierarchy.

Then:

“And because I thought pregnant women were emotional.”

Claire stared.

Mom continued:

“I thought if she cried, Daniel would think guilt.”

She weaponized stereotypes.

Then Claire said:

“Did you care if I was scared?”

Mom cried.

“At that moment, no.”

That honesty.

Then:

“Did you care about baby?”

“I told myself he was safe.”

Then:

“You never asked doctor.”

“No.”

Then:

“Did you want me gone from Daniel?”

Mom hesitated.

“Yes.”

Not killed.

Gone from family.

Why?

She believed Claire controlled me with wealth.

Irony.

Actually Mom wanted control.

Then:

“Was Marcus reason or excuse?”

Mom answered:

“Both.”

She always resented Claire.

Marcus crisis made action feel justified.

Then Claire asked:

“If I had no trust, would you have done it?”

Mom thought.

“Not financial part.”

“Would you still dislike me?”

“Yes.”

Useful.

So money not sole root.

Class.

Control.

Mother-son dependency.

Then:

“Do you want forgiveness?”

Mom said:

“Yes.”

Claire almost smiled.

At least honest.

Then:

“But I know I may not get it.”

Better.

Claire said:

“You won’t get access because you apologized.”

Mom nodded.

Then session ended.

No hug.

May you like

No instant tears together.

Good.
