Chapter 8 - MARCUS SAID HE THOUGHT CLAIRE’S MONEY MADE IT LESS WRONG

Years later, Marcus requested meeting with me from prison/reentry program? Could be after release with mediated setting.

I went alone.

He looked older.

He said:

“I hated Claire.”

“Why?”

“She saw through Harbor Ridge.”

The investment she refused.

She reviewed financials and said projections unrealistic.

Marcus felt humiliated.

Then:

“She didn’t insult you.”

“She didn’t have to.”

His ego.

Then:

“Did you think taking her money was justified?”

“At the time, yes.”

“Why?”

“She had so much.”

There.

Scarcity morality.

Then:

“You thought amount changed ownership.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“And Thomas?”

“The baby?”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“I thought if trust became harder after birth, we had to act fast.”

“You’re saying ‘we.’ Did Mom know full?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Who invented diamond plan?”

“Her.”

There.

Then chain?

“I didn’t know until after.”

Evidence matched.

Then:

“Why airport?”

“Because I knew everything was over.”

Then:

“Why diamonds?”

“Cash.”

Simple.

Then I asked:

“Did you love me?”

He looked surprised.

“You’re my brother.”

“That’s not answer.”

He thought.

“Yes.”

Then:

“So how?”

He laughed bitterly.

“I thought you’d forgive me because I was your brother.”

There.

Family as immunity.

Then:

“I thought Claire would recover money and you’d recover marriage.”

He imagined rich people absorb harm.

Then:

“Did you think Mom would recover trust?”

No answer.

Then I said:

“You treated wealth like anesthesia.”

He looked.

That was it.

If victim rich, pain counts less.

If family, betrayal forgivable.

If pregnant, easier to pressure.

If old, Mom easier to recruit.

All assumptions.

Then Marcus said:

“I’m sorry.”

I believed remorse maybe.

Did not restore business/financial trust.

Personal contact later limited.

No loans.

No companies.

No passwords.

Forgiveness not credential.
