Chapter 5 - LAUREN SAID SHE DID NOT THINK THE CHAIN WAS ABUSE

Lauren’s statement was difficult.

She cried.

Said Marcus manipulated.

Partly true.

Then she said:

“The chain was symbolic.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It was loose.”

Not defense.

“She could breathe.”

Not defense.

“We never left her alone.”

Worse.

Then:

“We wanted her to sit and listen.”

My mother had been forced to work garden first? Vanessa? Lauren said she asked her to weed to “calm down.”

Mom refused.

Marcus dumped basket.

Told her pick vegetables.

Humiliation.

Then chain.

Lauren said:

“I was angry.”

Why?

Mother called her thief.

Accurate.

Then:

“She said Daniel would divorce me.”

Eventually.

Then:

“I wanted her to understand she couldn’t destroy my marriage.”

So she punished my mother for threatening truth.

Then:

“Did you want her money?”

“I wanted security.”

Again.

She had grown up with unstable finances.

Marcus constantly failed.

She felt my family never accepted her.

Mom did not like her.

Some true.

Then Victor offered a structure where Lauren gained estate-management role.

She justified:

“I already managed everyone.”

Then money became validation.

Then:

“Did you know Marcus wanted to borrow against house?”

“Yes.”

There.

Then:

“Did you know he planned to use proceeds for his debts?”

“Some.”

There.

Then:

“Did you tell me?”

“No.”

Then chain.

Then forged deed.

Then phone hidden.

Each choice.

Then I asked:

“Did you love my mother?”

“No.”

Honest.

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why use my name to scare her?”

Silence.

Because love did not stop control.

Then plea later.

Lauren faced elder abuse/unlawful restraint, fraud, forgery-related conspiracy, financial exploitation.

Marcus heavier financial/coercion charges.

Victor document fraud, forged notarization, conspiracy, and additional cases.

No attempted murder.

No sensational.

Then professional consequences.

Restitution.

Then marriage.

Divorce.

Prenup.

Lauren retained lawful separate assets after restitution.

No revenge homelessness.

Then she wrote apology to Mother.

Mom refused at first.

Later read.

Eleanor, I am sorry I used your age as an argument against your right to choose.

Then:

I am sorry I put a chain on you. Calling it symbolic was cowardly.

Good.

Then:

You were not confused. I needed Daniel to think you were.

Specific.

Mom folded.

May you like

No reply.

That was her right.
