Chapter 4 - EMMA’S LAST VIDEO

Samantha had one more thing.

A video.

Emma recorded two weeks before her death.

She had instructed that I see it only if trust conflict arose.

I hated that she knew us so well.

Lily was asleep when we watched.

Emma appeared on screen.

Thin.

Headscarf.

Still smiling.

“Daniel.”

I cried before she said anything else.

Then:

“If Samantha is showing you this, somebody has probably made you feel guilty.”

I laughed through tears.

Yes.

“You are very easy to manipulate when you feel like you’ve failed someone.”

That was rude.

Accurate.

Then:

“Do not make financial or parenting decisions because somebody tells you you’re a bad father.”

My chest tightened.

James had used exactly that.

Then:

“Ask what Lily needs. Ask qualified people. And ask whether person giving advice gets money or power if you agree.”

Simple.

Then Emma looked down for second.

“I am afraid my family will treat Lily like continuation of Mercer estate instead of a child.”

There.

“James loves family history more than actual people sometimes.”

She knew.

Then:

“Adrian is useful, but do not let him improvise ethics.”

Also accurate.

Then she said:

“If you remarry, your wife is not replacement mother unless Lily chooses that relationship. Do not make either of them perform.”

Vanessa later had wanted to be called Mom? Maybe not in opening, but could have.

Then:

“And if new wife struggles, help her. Do not disappear into work and call providing money enough.”

That cut.

Emma knew me.

Then:

“Lily will need a father who is there.”

I covered face.

Samantha paused.

I said continue.

Emma:

“You will fail at that sometimes.”

Thank God.

“Do not turn failure into shame. Shame makes you easy to control. Correct behavior instead.”

Then:

“Her trust is there so she has choices when she grows. Not so adults can solve their problems now.”

Then final:

“Believe her when she tells you something scares her.”

I stopped video.

Could not breathe.

That line.

Lily had told me.

I had not believed enough.

Samantha sat quietly.

I eventually finished.

Emma smiled.

“I love you. I love Lily. Please don’t make me saint because I died. I was controlling too.”

I laughed.

She was.

Then:

“Just do better than we did.”

Video ended.

I sat for long time.

Then decided.

I resigned from constant-travel role at company.

Not quit career.

Changed position.

Less travel.

Was this guilt overcorrection?

Maybe.

I discussed therapist and board.

I wanted be more present regardless.

Could afford.

Good.

Then legal case accelerated.

James charged with conspiracy to commit trust fraud, forgery-related offenses, attempted identity/financial fraud, and child-related conspiracy? Vanessa's restraint separate. We should tie to lawful charges fictionally without over-specific. Fine.

Vanessa charged with unlawful restraint/child endangerment, conspiracy/fraud, forgery.

Adrian charged/professional discipline for fiduciary breach, fraud participation/obstruction if evidence.

Melissa lesser through cooperation.

Residential consultant faced licensing/consumer fraud issues, not necessarily criminal if misled. Facility investigated.

Then I learned facility had accepted referral deposit from Carter Family Management LLC.

$25,000.

Paid from our joint savings.

I had not noticed.

Again.

Then I reviewed finances.

Vanessa had moved around $180,000 over eighteen months.

Consultants.

Lawyers.

Formation fees.

Not all theft from Lily yet because trust protections stopped.

Most from marital funds.

She had financially harmed us but not yet drained trust.

Important.

The plan was interrupted before millions moved.

Then why send Lily away now?

Trust board meeting in six weeks.

Samantha planned update requiring stricter independent trustee.

James wanted changes before.

Pressure.

Hence escalation.

Then one email:

V: Daniel will not sign if Lily is home begging him.

J: Then create separation before papers.

There.

Placement as emotional isolation.

They wanted me making decisions without child present.

That made me furious.

Then another:

V: What if she tells him I restrained her?

J: Frame as therapeutic holding if needed.

He knew.

He advised narrative.

Not necessarily instruct actual tying, but helped cover.

Then police found fabric ties.

Not specialized restraints.

Vanessa used scarf strips.

Still.

Then Lily asked me:

“Is Vanessa coming back?”

I answered:

“Not to live with us.”

“Ever?”

“I don’t know if you will see her later. You will get choices too.”

She thought.

“I don’t want now.”

May you like

“Okay.”

That was enough.
