Chapter 5 - VANESSA SAID SHE LOVED LILY

People wanted simple story.

Evil stepmother.

Rich child.

Greedy attorney.

But Vanessa’s interrogation and later statement were messier.

She had loved Lily sometimes.

That was uncomfortable.

She had taken care during fevers.

Braided hair badly.

Built pillow forts.

Read same dinosaur book thirty times.

Then gradually resentment.

Why?

Because I was gone.

Because Emma’s trust required approvals.

Because James told her she had responsibility without authority.

Because Lily compared.

“Mommy used to sing this.”

“Mommy’s picture goes here.”

Normal grief.

Vanessa felt second.

Instead of therapy/boundary, she competed with dead woman.

Then she started strict discipline.

Then recording.

Then restraint.

Then financial plan.

She said:

“I thought if Lily spent six months at a good program, we could reset.”

A four-year-old.

Six months.

I stared.

“Did you think she needed treatment?”

“Sometimes.”

“Or did you need break?”

Silence.

“Both.”

There.

Then:

“Did you want her trust money?”

“I wanted some control over expenses.”

“Your company projected millions.”

“That was James.”

“But you owned 49%.”

“Yes.”

No escape.

Then:

“Did you intend to steal?”

“I told myself management fees were legitimate.”

There.

Self-deception.

Then:

“Why forge my signature?”

She cried.

“Because I knew you would say no.”

That single answer.

Consent problem.

Then she said:

“I didn’t think of it as stealing because money was for Lily’s care.”

Except affiliated fees.

Except she manufactured need.

Then:

“And if she improved?”

“She would come home.”

I could not know truth.

But no need exaggerate she wanted permanent disappearance.

Plan was temporary placement enabling governance.

Still monstrous.

Then James’s agenda was more permanent.

He wrote:

Once Daniel experiences calm without Lily in home, resistance decreases.

He thought of child as disruption.

Vanessa had read.

Did not stop.

Then Adrian had warned one time:

Four is unusually young for residential placement absent acute risk.

James replied:

Family willing.

Vanessa did not correct.

Then I asked:

“Why tie her?”

She covered face.

“I lost my temper.”

“Three times.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

Not plan.

Repeated abuse.

Then she said:

“She kicked me once.”

“She was four.”

“I know.”

Then:

“I know now.”

I hated phrase.

She knew then enough.

Then legal plea.

Vanessa eventually pleaded guilty to child endangerment/unlawful restraint and financial conspiracy/forgery counts.

She cooperated against James and Adrian.

No immunity.

Meaningful custody/probation/restitution, no unsupervised child contact for substantial period.

James received harsher sentence due conspiracy/financial scheme and prior trust misconduct.

Adrian lost license and faced criminal/civil consequences appropriate to role.

He cooperated, returned fees.

Melissa probation/professional sanctions.

Facility paid civil settlement and changed referral safeguards.

Then Samantha remained trustee.

I asked whether she should.

She said board would decide independently.

Good.

She recused from self-review.

An outside trust company audited her.

Found sound.

She remained co-trustee.

No hero exemption.

Then Lily’s $14.8 million trust stayed intact except legal/protective costs paid appropriately through separate estate insurance/Vanessa restitution where possible, not child depleted.

Then I added my own assets to separate education account? Fine.

But no need compensate guilt with money.

Therapist warned.

I focused on time.

Then marriage.

Divorce.

I filed.

Vanessa did not contest custody—she was not biological parent and had no parental rights? She was stepmother, unless adoption. Did she adopt Lily? Opening says wife, likely not. Let's establish she had not legally adopted. She had discussed adoption but Emma trust guardianship made complicated. So no custody rights. She had lived as stepmother.

That made sending Lily away under Daniel's consent still necessary.

Then divorce settlement divided lawful marital assets, with restitution offsets.

No stripping all.

Then I changed house locks.

But not in dramatic revenge.

Safety.

Then cameras.

I almost added more everywhere.

Therapist cautioned.

Lily should not grow under surveillance.

We kept entrances/common areas, not bedroom.

Existing bookshelf camera perhaps living room.

Good.

Then chair.

What did we do?

I wanted throw.

Lily said:

“I don’t like it.”

We removed from house.

Not burn.

Donation? Could be triggering to others? We disposed.

Simple.

Then Lily asked for new dining chair.

Purple cushion.

We bought.

May you like

She chose.

Agency.
