Chapter 4: The Night Everything Was Hidden

“You were never supposed to come home early.””

My mother’s words stayed in the hallway long after she stopped speaking.

I stared at her.

Not because I didn’t understand the sentence.

Because I understood it too well.

She wasn’t surprised that I was home.

She was afraid that I was home.

Ava wrapped her arms around herself.

“Michael…”

I looked at her.

Her face was filled with guilt.

Not the guilt of someone who had done something wrong.

The guilt of someone who had carried a secret because they thought they were protecting someone else.

I turned back to my mother.

“What does that mean?””

Linda didn’t answer.

Ethan looked away.

That was when I realized something.

They all knew.

My mother.

My brother.

Maybe even Daniel.

Everyone knew something about the worst night of my life except me.

The one person who deserved the truth.

“Mom.””

My voice was low.

“I’m asking you one time.””

She looked at me.

“What happened that night?””

The silence stretched.

Then Linda sighed.

“You don’t want to hear this.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

Ava stepped closer.

“Tell him.””

My mother looked at her with anger.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Ava’s eyes hardened.

“For months, I had no idea what you were doing.””

That landed.

My mother looked away.

I walked into the living room.

Everyone followed slowly.

Nobody wanted to sit.

Nobody wanted to make this feel normal.

Because it wasn’t.

The house that was supposed to be full of memories suddenly felt like a crime scene.

I stood near the fireplace.

The same place where Ava and I had announced our first pregnancy.

The same place where my mother had hugged us and cried.

Now I wondered if that hug had ever been real.

“Start from the beginning,” I said.

Ava sat down.

Her hands trembled.

“I had a doctor’s appointment that afternoon.””

I nodded.

“I remember.””

“You were at training.””

“Yeah.””

She looked at the floor.

“I was going to surprise you.””

My chest tightened.

“With what?””

She touched her stomach.

“The heartbeat recording.””

I froze.

“What?””

She gave a sad smile.

“I wanted to send it to you.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“I wanted you to hear our baby before you came home.””

I looked away.

Because suddenly I could see it.

Ava sitting alone in a doctor’s office.

Holding a recording she would never send.

Trying to understand why the world had changed in one sentence.

“What happened?””

She swallowed.

“The doctor said something was wrong.””

My hands clenched.

“He told me the baby had stopped developing.””

I closed my eyes.

Even after all this time, hearing it still hurt.

But then she continued.

“I left the office in shock.””

“And then?””

“Your mother called.””

I looked at Linda.

“She knew?””

Ava nodded.

“She said the doctor had called her.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Why would the doctor call her?””

Nobody answered.

That question sat there.

Heavy.

Wrong.

Ava continued.

“I told her I wanted to wait for you.””

My mother suddenly spoke.

“She was alone.””

I turned.

“Let her finish.””

Linda closed her mouth.

Ava looked grateful for one second.

Then she continued.

“She told me you were too far away. She said you needed to focus on your mission.””

My stomach tightened.

“She said I was your responsibility.””

Ava looked at me.

“But that I was becoming a distraction.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“She said that?””

Ava nodded.

“She picked me up from the clinic.””

“Then what?””

Ava looked toward the window.

“She drove me somewhere.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your parents’ old house.””

I looked at my mother.

“Why?””

Ava’s voice became quieter.

“I don’t know.””

Linda crossed her arms.

“You were panicking.””

Ava ignored her.

“She kept saying I needed time to calm down.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who was there?””

Ava looked at me.

“Daniel.””

The name still felt impossible.

Daniel Reeves.

My best friend from childhood.

The guy who stood beside me at my wedding.

The guy who disappeared afterward.

I had always thought he moved away because of work.

Because life changed.

Because people drifted apart.

But now he was appearing in every piece of the nightmare.

“Why was Daniel there?””

Ava shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

My mother answered.

“Because he was helping.””

I turned toward her.

“You keep saying that.””

She looked frustrated.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Helping would have been calling me.””

Nobody spoke.

“Helping would have been telling me my wife was alone.””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“Helping would not have been hiding everything.””

My mother’s face changed.

“You weren’t there.””

The words were quiet.

But they cut.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“I wasn’t there.””

My voice broke slightly.

“That is exactly why I needed the truth.””

Nobody moved.

Then Ava whispered:

“I lost the baby in that house.””

Everything stopped.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She nodded slowly.

“I started bleeding.””

My mother looked down.

“I called for help.””

Ava shook her head.

“No, you didn’t.””

Linda looked at her.

“Yes, I did.””

“You called Daniel.””

My eyes moved between them.

“Why?””

Ava looked at me.

“Because your mother didn’t want anyone to know she was with me.””

My mother immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

Ava’s eyes filled.

“You told me Michael would blame you.””

My mother went silent.

I looked at her.

“Would I have?””

She didn’t answer.

And that was answer enough.

I felt sick.

Because the person who was supposed to protect my wife had been more concerned about protecting herself.

Ava continued.

“Daniel drove me to the hospital.””

“And my mother?””

“She followed.””

“Why?””

Ava looked at the floor.

“She said she needed to talk to the doctors.””

My stomach dropped.

“About what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

My brother stood near the doorway.

His face looked older than it had an hour ago.

“I know what she talked about.””

My mother’s expression changed.

“Ethan.””

He ignored her.

“After the doctors told Ava the baby was gone, Mom spoke to them privately.””

I stared at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because I was there.””

My head snapped toward him.

“You were there too?””

He nodded.

“I came after Mom called me.””

Ava looked shocked.

“You knew?””

Ethan looked ashamed.

“I knew something happened.””

“Something?””

Ava laughed bitterly.

“You all knew something.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I looked at my brother.

“Then tell me what you know.””

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Mom asked the doctors not to contact you immediately.””

My body went completely still.

“What?””

“She said you were overseas. She said there was no point disturbing you until you came home.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

“I heard her say it.””

My mother’s voice rose.

“Because you don’t understand the situation.””

“No,” I said.

“I understand perfectly.””

The room fell silent.

Then Ethan pulled something from his pocket.

A small object.

A USB drive.

“I found this yesterday.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What is it?””

Ethan looked at my mother.

“Something Mom didn’t want anyone to see.””

My mother moved forward.

“Ethan, don’t.””

But he placed the USB on the table.

“It’s the hospital security backup.””

My heart stopped.

“From that night?””

He nodded.

“Someone copied it before the files were deleted.””

My mother’s face went pale.

I looked at the USB.

Then at Ava.

Then at the woman who raised me.

“Who copied it?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he said:

“Daniel.””

The name echoed through the room.

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

This time, there was no photo.

No document.

Just words.

*“Michael, if you’re watching the hospital footage, you need to know one thing…”*

I opened the message.

The next line appeared.

*“Your mother wasn’t trying to hide what happened to your baby.””*

May you like

A second later, another message arrived.

*“She was trying to hide what happened to Ava.””*
