Chapter 6: The Man Who Disappeared

“Daniel was the reason Ava was in that car.””

My mother’s words landed harder than any scream could have.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Ava.

Not Ethan.

Not even me.

Because there are moments when your mind refuses to accept what your ears just heard.

Daniel.

My best friend.

The person who stood beside me when I proposed to Ava.

The person who helped me move into my first apartment.

The person I trusted enough to leave my house key with when I was deployed.

Daniel was not supposed to be part of this.

He was supposed to be a memory.

A chapter of my life that ended years ago.

But he was everywhere.

The hospital footage.

The documents.

The missing journal.

The secret my wife carried.

I looked at my mother.

“Explain.””

Her face was wet with tears.

“I was trying to fix something.””

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“You were hiding something.””

She looked down.

“I made choices I thought would protect everyone.””

“Everyone?””

I pointed toward Ava.

“She was alone.””

Ava stood silently.

But I could see the pain in her eyes.

The pain of hearing someone describe the worst moment of her life as a problem to solve.

My mother sat down.

For the first time that night, she looked old.

Not like the woman who controlled every room she entered.

Just tired.

“I knew Daniel had feelings for Ava.””

The room froze.

I looked at Ava.

Her face turned pale.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“He never said it directly.””

Ava shook her head.

“No.””

“He didn’t have to.””

My mother looked at me.

“You were always gone. Deployments. Training. Missions.””

My jaw tightened.

“And?””

“And Daniel was always there.””

Ava immediately stepped forward.

“Stop.””

My mother looked at her.

“You know it’s true.””

“No.””

Ava’s voice was stronger now.

“He was your son’s friend.””

“That doesn’t mean he didn’t have feelings.””

I looked at my wife.

“Ava?””

She shook her head.

“I never knew.””

I believed her.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I knew her.

Ava was many things.

She was stubborn.

She was independent.

She was terrible at asking for help.

But she was not a liar.

I turned back to my mother.

“Why would Daniel being in love with Ava make you hide this?””

My mother looked away.

“Because he made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“What mistake?””

My mother’s hands trembled.

“The night of the accident…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“The night Ava lost the baby, Daniel was driving.””

Ava covered her mouth.

I felt the room tilt.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

My mother nodded.

“He was.””

Ava looked at her.

“That’s not possible.””

“You don’t remember everything.””

“I remember enough.””

My wife’s voice shook.

“I remember being in the passenger seat.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

Ava looked confused.

“Then why did you tell Michael I was driving?””

My mother didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation was unbearable.

“Because Daniel was afraid.””

My stomach tightened.

“Afraid of what?””

My mother looked at me.

“Losing everything.””

The silence afterward was brutal.

I thought about all the times I had wondered why Daniel disappeared after the wedding.

Why he stopped answering messages.

Why he moved away without saying goodbye.

I thought he was just living his life.

But he had been running.

“Tell me what happened.””

My mother looked at Ava.

Then at me.

“That night, Daniel picked Ava up from the clinic.””

Ava closed her eyes.

“I thought your mother was coming.””

“She was supposed to.””

My mother looked down.

“But Daniel arrived first.””

“Why?””

“He said he was nearby.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

My mother continued.

“Ava was upset. She was crying. She didn’t want to be alone.””

Ava whispered:

“I don’t remember calling him.””

“You didn’t.””

Everyone looked at my mother.

“He called you.””

Ava froze.

“What?””

My mother nodded.

“He said he wanted to make sure you were okay.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You knew this.””

“Yes.””

“And you let him take her?””

My mother’s eyes filled.

“I thought he would just drive her home.””

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

The word was barely audible.

“What happened?””

My mother looked toward the window.

“It was raining.””

The room became quiet.

“He was driving too fast.””

Ava shook her head.

“No…”

“He was distracted.””

“Stop.””

Ava’s voice broke.

“I don’t want to hear this.””

I moved toward her.

But she held up her hand.

“No.””

She looked at my mother.

“I need to know.””

My mother swallowed.

“Another car stopped suddenly.””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel turned too late.””

Nobody spoke.

“And the accident happened.””

Ava sat down slowly.

Her hand moved to her stomach.

The baby.

Our baby.

I looked at my mother.

“If Daniel caused the accident…”

My voice became colder.

“Why was I told Ava was driving?””

My mother looked ashamed.

“Because Daniel begged me.””

The room went silent.

“Begged you?””

“He said his life would be destroyed.””

I stared at her.

“And Ava’s?””

My mother looked down.

“I thought I was protecting her too.””

Ava laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“Protecting me?””

My mother looked at her.

“Yes.””

“No.””

Ava shook her head.

“You protected him.””

My mother didn’t respond.

Because it was true.

I walked to the table.

My hands were shaking.

“How did Daniel sign the papers?””

My mother looked at the floor.

“He was there when the hospital admitted Ava.””

“And?””

“He told them he was family.””

Ava looked shocked.

“He lied?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Ethan.

“You knew?””

He shook his head.

“Not all of it.””

“But you knew Daniel was involved.””

Ethan looked ashamed.

“I knew Mom was hiding something.””

I looked back at my mother.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at me.

“Because you were already broken.””

I almost whispered.

“You don’t know that.””

“I saw you.””

She stepped closer.

“You stopped eating. You stopped sleeping. You blamed yourself every day.””

Her voice cracked.

“I couldn’t add another person to hate.””

I stared at her.

“You took away my choice.””

She looked at me.

“I was trying to save my family.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to save the version of the family you wanted.””

Ava suddenly stood.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Everyone looked at her.

My mother went quiet.

That was all I needed.

“You know.””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled.

“He left.””

“When?””

“The day after the hospital.””

I looked at the security footage still open on the laptop.

The image of Daniel standing in the hospital hallway.

“How convenient.””

My mother flinched.

“He was scared.””

“He should have been.””

Ava wiped her face.

“I need to ask something.””

She looked directly at my mother.

“Did Daniel know about the baby before the accident?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was different this time.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Guilt.

I looked at my mother.

“Did he?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Yes.””

Ava’s face went pale.

“How?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because he was the one who told me.””

My heart stopped.

“Told you what?””

She looked at me.

“The reason he came to pick Ava up that night…”

A pause.

“…was because he wanted to tell her something before you came home.””

Ava stepped back.

“What?””

My mother’s voice dropped.

“He wanted to confess that he had been in love with her for years.””

Nobody moved.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at the screen.

I answered.

No one spoke for three seconds.

Then a familiar voice came through.

A voice I never expected to hear again.

“Michael.””

My blood ran cold.

Daniel.

“I know your mother told you part of the truth.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Before you come looking for me, you need to know one thing.””

My jaw tightened.

“What?””

His voice cracked.

“The accident wasn’t the worst thing that happened that night.””

The call went silent for a moment.

May you like

Then Daniel whispered:

“Your mother is still lying about what happened after we reached the hospital.””
