Chapter 3 - DNA DID NOT MAKE ME THEIR FATHER OVERNIGHT

The DNA test was repeated independently.
Not because I doubted Nia.
Because the children deserved certainty outside contaminated clinic.
Result:
Theo Carter-Wells.
Eliana Carter-Wells.
My biological children.
99.99%.
I sat alone in my office after reading.
Five years ago, I had ended a marriage partly because I believed I would never become a father with Nia.
Four years ago, she gave birth to twins genetically mine.
Three years ago, my mother saw them.
Two years ago, Vanessa knew.
And I stood at altar anyway because everyone except me had made decisions about what truth I could handle.
But I had made one decision too.
I left Nia.
Before children existed.
Before cover-up fully mattered.
I had abandoned marriage because fertility became condition.
That was mine.
I could not turn conspiracy into excuse for how I treated her.
When we finally met privately, I said:
“I’m sorry.”
Nia looked tired.
“For which part?”
I almost said everything.
Too easy.
“For making motherhood the measure of our marriage.”
She said nothing.
“For treating appointments like your body was failing me.”
Still silence.
“For blocking you.”
Her eyes filled.
“For leaving.”
Then:
“And for needing medical fraud to understand how cruel some of that was.”
Nia looked away.
“You wanted children.”
“Yes.”
“So did I.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She looked back.
“You wanted children more than you wanted to be the man sitting next to a woman who might never have them.”
That was sharper.
True.
I swallowed.
“Yes.”
Then:
“I do not forgive that because it turns out we had embryos.”
“I know.”
Good.
Then children.
I wanted custody immediately? No.
I asked what they knew.
Nia had told them their biological father lived elsewhere and she would explain when older.
Why not name me?
Because after Evelyn betrayed, she feared Carter family.
She changed surname to Wells, her mother’s name.
She built life.
Worked as pediatric physical therapist.
Raised twins with help from sister.
No secret billionaire rescue.
Then did she accept child support?
No because I didn't know.
Now legally, support issues.
I offered.
She said lawyers.
Good.
No envelope.
We established parentage through court.
Then gradual contact plan.
Two-hour meetings.
Therapist-guided.
No sleepovers.
No “Dad” requirement.
Theo called me Daniel.
Eliana too.
That hurt.
But deserved.
First meeting at park.
Theo asked:
“Are you rich?”
Kids.
“Yes.”
“How rich?”
Nia:
“Theo.”
I laughed.
“Too much.”
Then Eliana:
“Do you have a pool?”
“Yes.”
“Can we see?”
Nia:
“Later.”
Good.
No buying affection.
I brought no giant gifts.
Just old photo album showing me and Nia younger.
Maybe inappropriate? Nia approved.
Kids liked.
Then Theo saw picture of me holding a baseball glove.
“You play?”
“Yes.”
We threw ball.
Small.
Eliana liked drawing.
She had my mother’s dimple but Nia’s stubbornness.
Then first time Theo accidentally said:
“Dad—Daniel.”
He corrected.
I pretended not to react.
At home I cried.
Then Vanessa.
The wedding ended.
Our engagement? We were already about to marry, not married. Good.
She moved out of shared home.
No divorce needed.
We separated finances.
Did she commit crimes?
Potential obstruction/privacy and conspiracy to conceal medical correction, interference with communications.
But not kidnapping children.
Need plausible.
Clinic investigation.
Dr. Lane.
He admitted chart error was discovered before divorce.
He delayed disclosure after Evelyn pressed.
Later he falsified note claiming notification made.
Why?
Fear malpractice exposure.
Then Vanessa contacted him later to keep records “closed.”
He accepted consulting payments from Carter Foundation? Maybe.
Payment:
$85,000 donation to clinic research fund from family foundation shortly after.
Did Evelyn intend bribery?
Emails:
Evelyn: The family appreciates discretion.
That looks.
Foundation grants could be legitimate but timing suspicious.
Independent review.
No direct bribery proof initially.
Then Lane faced medical board, civil fraud/malpractice, obstruction if he falsified records.
He cooperated.
He turned over messages.
Vanessa:
If Daniel learns embryos survived, he will go back to Nia.
Lane:
That is not a medical issue.
Vanessa:
Then don’t make it one.
There.
She was actively suppressing.
Then:
Original paper file needs to remain archived.
Lane:
It is.
So current text “clinic found original files” because audit pulled archive.
Then why Lane texted Vanessa? He warned because regulators discovered and feared she would expose his involvement.
Bad choice.
Then Evelyn.
She had no financial motive? Maybe inheritance.
Could be she disliked Nia because Nia’s family had controlling share? But user asked drama, maybe deeper. We can add reason beyond “protect son.”
Nia had inherited 12% of Carter Biotech through marriage? No, ex-wife shouldn't.
Maybe Nia’s father co-founded fertility clinic? Hmm.
Better not add random trust. The core emotional betrayal is enough, but user likes financial/legal secrets.
Could be Carter Family Trust succession clause: if Daniel had biological children, voting shares would eventually pass to them; if childless, Evelyn's younger son / charity branch gained control. Did Evelyn stand to benefit if Daniel remained childless? Yes! That adds motive.
Daniel's grandfather's family trust granted Daniel 34% voting rights during life, but upon death, descendants inherit. If no descendants, Evelyn’s branch could appoint successor trustee? Wait Evelyn is mother, not sibling. She could remain family trust protector if Daniel childless, but if children exist, an independent descendant committee takes over. She liked control.
More concrete: grandfather’s estate left Carter Legacy Trust. Daniel beneficiary. Upon birth of biological children, a separate descendant trust receives 18% of family holding company, diluting voting block controlled by Evelyn's family office. So hiding children preserved her proxy control and management fees. Nice.
Nia's children being born should trigger trust rights.
Evelyn knew.
This gives financial motive.
She had been receiving $420k annual management fees through Carter Family Office while Daniel childless. With children, independent trustee would take over portions.
Nia's notice included birth certificates/DNA partly to trigger.
Evelyn hid.
Then not only emotional “closure.”
Money/control.
Daniel confronted.
“You kept my children from me for voting rights?”
Evelyn said:
“It wasn’t only money.”
Worse.
She believed Nia used embryos after divorce to secure inheritance.
She suspected opportunism.
No basis.
She decided to “protect family.”
Again.
Then Vanessa knew this too, and after marriage? If Daniel had children already, her potential future children would not be sole descendant heirs. She had financial/status motive too.
Vanessa wanted future children with Daniel to be first recognized heirs.
She said:
“I thought Nia made a choice after you left and should live with it.”
Nia had right.
Children had rights regardless.
Then family trust audit.
The twins were entitled to distributions retroactively since birth into protected trusts.
Money had been retained in reserve, not stolen, because trustee did not know identity but unallocated descendant reserve existed.
Good.
Around $6.2m total accrued to their branch.
No one “gets millions tomorrow”—professional trusts established.
Evelyn had earned extra management fees incorrectly; she must repay some.
Vanessa never got that money.
Then Daniel's future.
He did not automatically reconcile Nia.
She had a partner? Maybe not, to leave possibility. But don't force romance.
She had dated but single now.
Daniel wanted.
But Nia said:
“You are confusing children with marriage.”
Good.
They co-parent.
May you like
Then over years perhaps rebuild, maybe not necessarily remarry. User likes closure. Could later choose each other slowly.
Let's continue.
