Chapter 5 - THE CHILDREN DID NOT OWE ME FIVE LOST YEARS

The court established parentage.
Then visitation.
Theo hated sudden changes.
Eliana was curious.
Different.
Theo asked Nia:
“Why does he get to be Dad now?”
She answered:
“He is your biological father. What you call him is your choice.”
Good.
I heard later.
That mattered.
At first:
Daniel.
Then Mr. Carter once joking.
Then Dad accidentally.
Eliana called me Dad sooner.
Theo resisted.
I did not reward one.
No competition.
Then child support arrears.
Lawyers calculated.
Even though I did not know, legal obligations complex.
I agreed to fund appropriate support/education and reimburse Nia for reasonable past expenses through settlement without forcing litigation.
But not hand her giant guilt check.
Independent counsel.
Then trust.
Twins became beneficiaries with separate accounts.
Nia insisted neither she nor I be sole trustee.
Good.
Professional.
Then one day Theo asked:
“Are we rich?”
I said:
“Your family has money held for future.”
Nia looked approving.
Then:
“Can I buy Lamborghini?”
He was five.
“No.”
“Then we’re not rich.”
Fair.
Then Eliana asked:
“Why did Grandma Evelyn not tell you?”
Hard.
“She thought she knew what was best and she was wrong.”
“Did she not like us?”
“No.”
“She met you once and loved you.”
Then:
“Then why?”
“Adults can love people and still make selfish choices.”
That became theme.
Then would they see her?
Nia said only if therapist/children want.
Eventually supervised.
Evelyn cried meeting.
Theo stayed behind Nia.
Eliana stared.
Evelyn said:
“I am your grandmother.”
Theo:
“You knew us.”
“Yes.”
“And didn’t tell Dad.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Evelyn gave child-level truth:
“I was scared of what would change, and I chose wrong.”
Theo:
“You should’ve told.”
“Yes.”
No hug forced.
Eliana hugged later.
Theo not.
Different.
Then Nia.
She had anger toward Evelyn.
No forgiveness early.
Civil settlement addressed withheld trust notice.
No family dinner pretending.
Good.
Then Dr. Lane.
Medical board hearing.
He testified:
Initial chart swap likely clerical.
But failure to disclose was deliberate.
He feared malpractice.
Evelyn pressure reinforced.
He falsified note that “patient notified by phone.”
Which patient?
Nia.
She never received.
Then why he approved embryo transfer later?
Different department found viable embryos and Nia's contractual rights. Lane had tried to say transfer risky but another physician handled.
So Nia conceived despite his cover-up.
Then DNA.
Lane authorized test secretly to verify because he knew Daniel might sue.
Then hid result.
Unbelievable professional misconduct.
He lost license and faced civil judgment, possible criminal record falsification/obstruction depending jurisdiction.
Clinic settled with Nia and me separately.
Part went into children's medical/education trusts? We could direct settlements, but not necessary.
Nia used her settlement partly to buy home, invest.
No charity saint.
Then clinic changed patient-identification and disclosure procedures.
System.
Then original technician, Maria Chen, became whistleblower.
She had noted mismatch.
Her memo was buried.
She later discovered during audit and reported.
She met Nia to apologize? She had tried.
Nia said:
“You were the one person who wrote it down.”
Not blame.
Then Maria testified.
Good.
Then I confronted what “infertility” label did to me.
Therapy.
I had believed masculinity/future tied biological fatherhood.
I had put that burden on Nia.
Then I became father.
But biology did not automatically repair character.
I had to learn.
At park, Theo fell.
He ran to Nia, not me.
I felt jealous.
Then ashamed.
Of course he did.
She was home.
I was new.
I learned not to treat love as inheritance claim.
Exactly like mother treated trust.
May you like
Then slowly he started reaching for me.
Earned.
