Chapter 2: The Woman I Never Expected
The door opened three inches.
Then stopped.
Danielle stood perfectly still beside the desk, one hand gripping her phone, the other reaching instinctively toward Ethan.
“Mom?”” Ethan asked again.
The woman outside spoke softly.
“It’s me.””
Danielle knew the voice.
Her throat tightened.
“Claire?””
The door opened wider.
Claire Whitwear stepped into the suite.
She was forty-one, elegant, composed, and dressed in a charcoal coat over a silk blouse. Her dark hair was pinned neatly behind one ear. There was nothing visibly threatening about her.
That almost made it worse.
For eight years, Claire had been the closest thing Danielle had to a sister.
They had met when Danielle first began expanding the Whitwear hotel business. Claire had handled finance. Danielle had handled operations. Together, they had turned one aging property into a luxury brand.
Claire had stood beside Danielle at the opening of the first hotel.
She had held Danielle’s hand at the hospital when Ethan was born.
She had been there the night Danielle’s husband left.
And now she was standing inside Danielle’s private suite after someone had warned her to leave her own hotel.
Ethan looked at her.
“Aunt Claire!””
Claire’s expression softened immediately.
“Hey, buddy.””
Ethan ran toward her.
Claire crouched and hugged him.
“You got so tall.””
“You didn’t come to my birthday.””
The smile on Claire’s face flickered.
“I know.””
“Mom said you were busy.””
Claire glanced at Danielle.
“Your mother was being kind.””
Danielle folded her arms.
“What are you doing here?””
Claire slowly stood.
“I needed to talk to you.””
“You could have called.””
“I did.””
“My phone didn’t ring.””
Claire hesitated.
Then she looked at Danielle’s phone.
“That’s interesting.””
A cold sensation moved through Danielle’s chest.
“What does that mean?””
Claire stepped farther into the room.
“It means we need to talk before someone else gets to you.””
Danielle’s eyes narrowed.
“Someone else?””
Claire looked toward the hallway.
“Did you get a call?””
Danielle didn’t answer.
Claire’s face changed.
“You did.””
“Who are you afraid of?””
“I’m not afraid.””
“You came into my suite without telling me you were coming.””
“I came because you’re in danger.””
Ethan looked between them.
“Why?””
Danielle immediately softened her voice.
“Ethan, sweetheart, why don’t you go watch television for a minute?””
“But—”
“Please.””
He frowned.
Then he picked up the remote from the bed and walked toward the sitting area.
Claire watched him go.
When she was sure he was out of earshot, she lowered her voice.
“The call came from the hotel security line, didn’t it?””
Danielle stared at her.
“How do you know?””
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
“Because I was the one who ordered the alert.””
Silence.
Danielle slowly lowered her phone.
“You ordered it?””
“Yes.””
“You told someone to call me?””
“Yes.””
“To tell me to leave my hotel?””
Claire nodded.
“Why?””
“Because somebody has been accessing your private accounts.””
Danielle took one step closer.
“What accounts?””
“Your executive account. Your ownership files. The trust documents.””
Danielle’s expression hardened.
“And you knew about this?””
“I found out three weeks ago.””
“Three weeks?””
“I was trying to contain it.””
“You were trying to contain someone stealing from me?””
Claire flinched.
“I never said stealing.””
“What would you call unauthorized access to ownership records?””
“I would call it dangerous.””
Danielle looked toward the sitting area.
Ethan was watching television, unaware of every word.
She lowered her voice even further.
“Start talking.””
Claire took a breath.
“Someone has been trying to transfer controlling interest in the hotel group.””
Danielle stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“It shouldn’t be.””
“My shares are protected.””
“They were.””
The word landed hard.
Danielle’s face went still.
“What do you mean, were?””
Claire walked to the desk.
“The legal structure changed.””
“When?””
“Last month.””
“I approved no changes.””
“I know.””
Danielle reached for the tablet.
“Show me.””
Claire hesitated.
“Not here.””
“Why not?””
“Because your suite may not be secure.””
Danielle looked around.
The glass walls.
The television.
The tablet.
The elegant room.
She suddenly noticed how many small black security sensors were embedded in the ceiling.
Then she looked at Claire.
“You think someone is listening.””
“I know someone is.””
Ethan’s laughter floated from the television.
Danielle felt the room shrink.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Claire turned toward the door.
“But I know they’ve been inside this hotel.””
A soft electronic chime sounded.
Both women froze.
Danielle looked at the suite entrance.
The electronic lock had activated.
Someone outside had scanned a key.
Claire whispered, “Don’t move.””
The handle pressed downward.
Danielle instinctively moved in front of Ethan.
The door opened.
Marcus Hale stepped inside.
The general manager looked startled when he saw Claire.
“Claire?””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Marcus.””
He closed the door behind him.
“I need to speak with Danielle immediately.””
Danielle didn’t move.
“What happened?””
Marcus glanced at Claire.
Then at Danielle.
“Your name appeared on another internal authorization.””
“What authorization?””
His jaw tightened.
“A transfer request.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Marcus, she doesn’t know yet.””
Danielle turned sharply.
“Know what?””
Marcus looked like a man standing on a ledge.
“Someone submitted paperwork this afternoon to suspend your executive access.””
Danielle gave a disbelieving laugh.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Who submitted it?””
He looked down.
Then back up.
“Your authorization code was used.””
Danielle’s face drained.
“My code?””
“Yes.””
“Who has my code?””
Marcus hesitated.
Claire spoke quietly.
“One person.””
Danielle turned toward her.
“Who?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Danielle stepped closer.
“Claire.””
Claire looked directly into her eyes.
“Your husband.””
The room went silent.
Ethan turned around from the television.
“Mom?””
Danielle didn’t even hear him.
Her husband had been gone for two years.
Daniel had disappeared after draining their joint investment account and leaving behind a note that said he needed a fresh start.
Danielle had never heard from him again.
At least, not directly.
She looked at Marcus.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
“Daniel is not connected to the hotel.””
“He shouldn’t be.””
Claire’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“But someone just used a dormant account bearing his name.””
Danielle shook her head.
“Where?””
Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out a thin folder.
He placed it on the desk.
Danielle opened it.
Inside was a printed authorization form.
At the bottom sat a digital signature.
Daniel Whitwear.
Her husband’s signature.
Perfect.
Every curve.
Every line.
Every tiny flourish.
Ethan walked closer.
“Dad?””
Danielle immediately shut the folder.
“Go sit down, sweetheart.””
“But is Dad here?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Ethan watched her face.
Claire knelt beside him.
“Ethan, why don’t you help me choose a movie?””
He nodded reluctantly.
Claire guided him back toward the sitting area.
Danielle kept staring at the folder.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“There’s more.””
She looked up.
“What?””
“The person who submitted the authorization didn’t just use Daniel’s name.””
He reached inside the folder again.
“This was attached.””
He slid a photograph across the desk.
Danielle picked it up.
Her breath stopped.
It showed Daniel standing in the hotel lobby.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably him.
He was wearing a dark suit.
Standing beside him was Rebecca.
The receptionist.
Danielle stared at the photograph.
“When was this taken?””
Marcus answered.
“Tonight.””
Danielle looked at him.
“Tonight?””
“Forty-three minutes before you arrived.””
Her fingers tightened around the photograph.
Rebecca had known.
That cold look.
The dismissive smile.
The certainty.
It suddenly made sense.
Rebecca hadn’t been confused by Danielle’s reservation.
She had been following instructions.
Danielle looked toward the sitting area.
Ethan was watching an animated movie while Claire stood nearby.
Then Danielle noticed something else.
A tiny reflection in the black television screen.
The suite door was open.
Marcus had closed it.
But now it was open again.
Just slightly.
Danielle’s heart slammed against her ribs.
“Marcus.””
He followed her gaze.
His face changed.
“Stay here.””
He moved toward the door.
Claire grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because if they wanted to come inside…”
Claire swallowed.
“…they already did.””
Danielle slowly turned.
A manila envelope sat on the bed.
None of them had placed it there.
Danielle walked toward it.
“Don’t touch it,” Marcus said.
But she already had.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
No signature.
No letterhead.
Just six words typed in the center.
YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO COME BACK.
Danielle stared at the message.
Then her phone buzzed again.
This time, it was not a private number.
It was a text from an unknown sender.
She opened it.
A photograph loaded onto the screen.
Her suite.
Taken from inside.
Ethan was visible in the corner of the image.
Danielle’s blood ran cold.
Then another message appeared beneath it.
*CHECK THE ROOM BEFORE YOU CHECK YOUR ENEMIES.*
Danielle slowly lifted her eyes.
Across the suite, Ethan was still watching television.
Claire was standing beside him.
Marcus was near the door.
Nobody moved.
Then, from somewhere behind Danielle, a woman whispered:
“You should have listened when I told you to leave.””
Danielle spun around.
May you like
Rebecca was standing inside the suite.
And she was holding a master key.
