Chapter 7: The Name Behind the Network

Danielle stared at the black eagle symbol in Evelyn Kane’s hand.

The corridor seemed suddenly too narrow.

Too bright.

Too quiet.

Ethan stood behind Claire, staring at the woman who had just revealed that everything they had believed about Daniel’s family might have been a lie.

Danielle tightened her grip on her son’s hand.

“You’re Evelyn Kane.””

Evelyn smiled.

“Now you’re asking the right question.””

“You lied about who you were.””

“Yes.””

“You used Mara Whitwear’s identity.””

“Yes.””

“You’ve been inside my house.””

“Yes.””

“You’ve been watching my son.””

Evelyn’s smile vanished.

“I’ve been watching your family.””

“That isn’t better.””

“No,” Evelyn said.

“It isn’t.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What exactly do you want?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“What everyone wants when they finally realize they’ve been lied to.””

Marcus frowned.

“The truth?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Control.””

Danielle’s eyes hardened.

“You already have plenty of it.””

“Not enough.””

“That’s the problem.””

Evelyn tilted her head.

“You sound like your husband.””

“Don’t compare us.””

A faint smile appeared.

“You still love him.””

Danielle said nothing.

Evelyn’s eyes flicked to Ethan.

“That makes you predictable.””

Danielle stepped closer.

“Mention my son again and this conversation ends.””

Evelyn laughed softly.

“You still think this is a negotiation.””

“No.””

Danielle held up the black key card.

“This is evidence.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Danielle noticed.

So did Claire.

“You’re afraid of this,” Danielle said.

Evelyn looked at the card.

“I’m not afraid.””

“You should be.””

Danielle turned the card over.

A serial number was engraved on the back.

She held it closer to the light.

Marcus stepped beside her.

“What are you looking at?””

“An asset number.””

Marcus stared.

“How do you know?””

“Because I’ve seen this numbering system.””

“Where?””

“On the original property deeds.””

Claire looked at Danielle.

“Danielle…”

“You said the first hotel was financed through a protected trust.””

Claire nodded.

“It was.””

Danielle looked at the card again.

“This number belongs to the trust.””

Evelyn’s face went still.

Danielle smiled faintly.

“So this key doesn’t open a door.””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

“It opens an account.””

Still nothing.

Danielle looked at Marcus.

“Take me downstairs.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Where?””

“The archive.””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Danielle turned.

“Why not?””

“Because that’s what she wants.””

Evelyn smiled.

“Claire understands.””

Danielle looked at Evelyn.

“You want me to go there.””

“I want you to see something.””

“What?””

“The truth.””

Danielle glanced toward Ethan.

“No tricks.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Take your son.””

Claire stared at her.

“Absolutely not.””

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“Why are you suddenly protective?””

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“Because I know what happens in the archive.””

Danielle’s attention sharpened.

“What happens?””

Claire looked at her.

“The people who go looking for the original records don’t always come back.””

Marcus stepped toward Claire.

“How many?””

Claire whispered, “Three.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything Evelyn had said.

Danielle looked at the woman who had been standing beside her for years.

“You knew people disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

“That excuse is getting old.””

Claire looked down.

“I know.””

Evelyn turned toward the elevator.

“Twenty minutes.””

Danielle looked at her.

“For what?””

“To decide whether you want the company or your husband.””

Danielle’s expression changed.

“My husband is alive.””

“Yes.””

“You said he was part of the network.””

“He is.””

“You said he had been captured.””

“He has.””

“Then prove it.””

Evelyn smiled.

She tapped her phone.

A security feed appeared.

Daniel.

He was still tied to the chair.

But this time the camera angle was different.

He looked exhausted.

A man stood behind him.

Black suit.

Gray tie.

Face obscured.

Daniel saw the camera.

Then he looked directly into it.

“Danielle,” he said, “don’t come.””

Evelyn ended the feed.

Danielle’s breathing became shallow.

“Where is he?””

“You already know.””

“No.””

“The penthouse.””

Danielle looked upward.

Thirty floors.

She remembered the message.

*BRING THE BOY TO THE PENTHOUSE.*

She looked down at Ethan.

“No.””

Evelyn smiled.

“Then you understand.””

“What?””

“You don't have to save your husband.””

Danielle’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re giving me a choice?””

“No.””

Evelyn held Danielle’s gaze.

“I’m giving you a test.””

She walked toward the elevator.

“Twenty minutes.””

Then she disappeared behind the doors.

The moment the elevator closed, Danielle turned toward Claire.

“What is she really trying to do?””

Claire stared at the floor.

“She wants you to authenticate the trust.””

“Why?””

“Because the system needs a living owner to activate the network.””

Danielle frowned.

“What network?””

Claire looked toward the security monitors.

“The original properties.””

“How many?””

“Twenty-seven.””

Danielle stared.

“I own eight hotels.””

“You think you do.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Claire, stop speaking in riddles.””

Claire looked at him.

“The eight hotels are only the visible layer.””

She pointed toward the monitors.

“There are nineteen others.””

Marcus’s face went pale.

“What kind of properties?””

“Hotels. Storage facilities. Private residences. Corporate offices.””

Danielle looked at her.

“And all of them are connected?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire whispered:

“Money.””

Danielle felt anger replacing fear.

“Then why come after me?””

“Because the network was frozen after Daniel disappeared.””

“What unlocked it?””

“Your return.””

Danielle looked at the black key card.

“This?””

“No.””

Claire’s eyes settled on Danielle.

“You.””

A loud alarm suddenly sounded.

Red lights appeared along the corridor.

Marcus checked his phone.

“Security breach.””

“Where?”” Danielle asked.

He looked at the screen.

“Lobby.””

Another alert.

“Parking garage.””

Then another.

“Service entrance.””

Danielle looked at Claire.

“They’re moving people.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Claire looked toward the elevator.

“Toward us.””

Marcus immediately drew the emergency access card from his pocket.

“We need to move.””

Danielle shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“We have maybe two minutes.””

“I’m not running.””

“Danielle—”

“We need the archive.””

Claire stepped closer.

“If we go there, she’ll know exactly what you’re doing.””

Danielle looked at her.

“She already knows.””

She handed Ethan to Marcus.

“Take him.””

Ethan looked frightened.

“No.””

Danielle crouched.

“Listen to me.””

“I want to stay with you.””

“I know.””

“You said we were going home.””

“We are.””

“When?””

Danielle touched his cheek.

“Soon.””

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

“Promise?””

She smiled.

“I promise.””

Marcus pulled Ethan close.

“I’ve got him.””

Danielle nodded.

“Take the east stairwell. Lock every door behind you.””

Marcus started to move.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“I’m going with Danielle.””

Danielle looked at her.

“No.””

Claire stopped.

“I know the archive.””

Danielle’s expression softened for the first time.

“Then tell me what I need to know.””

Claire swallowed.

“The archive is beneath the original lobby.””

“The basement?””

“Below it.””

“How far?””

“Three levels.””

Marcus looked at the map.

“There is no third basement.””

Claire answered quietly.

“That’s why it’s hidden.””

Danielle looked toward the lobby.

“Show me.””

They moved quickly.

The east stairwell was empty.

Ethan and Marcus went up.

Danielle and Claire went down.

At the bottom of the first flight, Claire stopped.

“Wait.””

Danielle turned.

Claire removed a ring from her finger.

The inside contained the black eagle symbol.

Danielle stared.

“You still have it.””

“I never had a chance to get rid of it.””

She pressed the ring against a metal panel.

Nothing happened.

Then Danielle held up the key card.

A green light flashed.

The wall unlocked.

Behind it was an old brass elevator.

Claire entered a code.

The doors opened.

Danielle stepped inside.

Claire followed.

The elevator began descending.

Floor B1.

B2.

Then the display went blank.

The elevator kept moving.

Danielle looked at Claire.

“How deep does this go?””

Claire whispered:

“Far enough that nobody can hear you scream.””

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

A cold rush of air moved through the shaft.

Beyond it was a massive underground room.

Shelves stretched into darkness.

Thousands of files.

Rows of locked cabinets.

Old computers.

Hard drives.

Bank boxes.

Photographs.

At the center stood a single glass case.

Inside was a thick leather ledger.

Danielle walked toward it.

“What is that?””

Claire’s voice trembled.

“The original ownership book.””

Danielle looked at the lock.

“What opens it?””

Claire pointed.

“There.””

A small fingerprint reader.

Danielle frowned.

“You’re kidding.””

“No.””

She placed her hand on it.

The machine scanned her fingerprint.

A red light appeared.

*IDENTITY CONFIRMED.*

Danielle looked at Claire.

“What now?””

The machine chimed again.

*FINAL OWNER REQUIRED.*

Danielle’s eyes narrowed.

“There is no final owner.””

The room fell silent.

Then the system displayed a name.

Not Danielle.

Not Daniel.

Not Mara.

Not Evelyn.

A name Danielle had never heard.

*ETHAN WHITWEAR.*

Danielle stared.

“No.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Danielle stepped back.

“My son is six.””

The system chimed again.

*BENEFICIARY VERIFIED.*

A second message appeared.

*SUCCESSION ACTIVATION AVAILABLE.*

Then the lights in the archive switched on.

At the far end of the room, a door opened.

A man stepped out.

Daniel.

Alive.

Free.

But he wasn’t alone.

The same gray-haired man from the security footage walked beside him.

Danielle stared.

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Danielle,” he said.

She rushed toward him.

Then stopped.

Something was wrong.

Daniel’s expression wasn’t relief.

It was terror.

He looked at Claire.

Then at the ledger.

Then at Ethan’s name on the screen.

And he whispered:

“She found him.””

Danielle’s blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Daniel looked behind her.

“You need to get out of here.””

A voice answered from the darkness.

“You're too late.””

Evelyn stepped into the archive.

And beside her stood Rebecca.

May you like

Rebecca was no longer wearing the hotel receptionist uniform.

She was holding a gun.
