Chapter 2 - SOFIA HAD NOT LEFT HER CHILDREN A FORTUNE TO “RUN”

The binder contained the real trust documents.

Dante read them with independent counsel the next morning.

The children were beneficiaries of the Sofia Maren Bellucci Children’s Trust.

Not billionaire fantasy.

Substantial.

About $18 million in combined investments, insurance proceeds, and minority interests in a logistics-property company.

Leo and Mia did not control it.

Dante did not own it.

Professional trustee did.

That should have made theft difficult.

So what had Javier been trying to steal?

Not principal directly.

Control around it.

An older trust schedule named an independent corporate trustee and gave Dante limited parent-request authority for legitimate expenses.

The altered version named:

Maren Family Advisory LLC

as “special family administrator.”

Managing partner:

Javier Maren.

Annual fee:

1.5% of certain managed assets.

On $18 million, that could become hundreds of thousands a year.

Then another clause.

Emergency child representative if Dante were “incapacitated, under criminal investigation, or found unsuitable.”

Javier again.

There.

That explained the birthday setup.

Javier had whispered:

Tell everyone your father pushed you.

One accusation would not remove Dante.

But repeated claims, video clips, “concerned relatives,” and paperwork?

That could become leverage.

Then Dante found another altered document.

A beneficiary distribution schedule.

Original:

Leo and Mia equal beneficiaries.

Altered:

Ten percent “family stabilization reserve.”

Administered by Maren Family Advisory.

Another fee stream.

Not stealing children’s ownership.

Creating permanent paid access.

Then forensic attorney Samantha Reed—independent, not tied to family—said:

“This is sophisticated enough to look administrative rather than predatory.”

Dante looked.

“Meaning?”

“You don’t take eighteen million dollars. You charge four hundred thousand a year for twenty years.”

There.

That was the plan.

Then:

“And if you can become child representative, you influence which advisers get hired.”

Javier did not need to own trust.

He needed to sit between children and everyone who did.

Then signature pages.

Some real.

Some copied.

Dante’s signature appeared on one amendment.

“I never signed this.”

Samantha examined.

“Probably lifted from an estate acknowledgment.”

Then Sofia’s signature.

More difficult.

Could be real page attached to altered text.

Forensic document review required.

Then Renata.

Why had she discovered?

Sofia’s father, Augusto Maren, created original trust framework.

Renata worked in accounting.

Even though unacknowledged publicly, she sometimes helped Sofia review family books.

She noticed adviser fees.

Then Victor Hale.

He was Sofia’s estate attorney.

He prepared some amendments.

Javier was his “family liaison.”

Renata objected.

Then she found draft schedule naming Javier.

She told Sofia.

Sofia secretly copied originals.

Locked drawer.

Then why did she not confront Dante?

She tried.

Emails showed:

Sofia: We need independent review of Javier and Victor.

Dante replied from Singapore:

Can this wait until I’m back? Javier is family.

That hurt.

Then:

Sofia: That is exactly why it cannot.

He never responded.

Two days later, Sofia entered hospital.

Her death was from an aggressive autoimmune cardiac complication? Let's keep natural, verified.

She had lupus-related myocarditis? Maybe too medical. Simpler:

Sofia died from a sudden pulmonary embolism after surgery.

Independent medical review.

No foul play.

Important.

Not every death becomes murder.

Then Renata disappeared after funeral.

Why?

Someone accused her of forging checks from Sofia’s account.

An arrest warrant? Too much. Better criminal complaint under investigation.

Javier showed Dante bank records.

$240,000 transfer to Renata.

Looked like theft.

Actually?

Sofia had transferred it legitimately to fund independent legal review and secure documents.

But memo omitted.

Renata panicked after being threatened with prosecution and moved.

Poor choice.

She should have fought.

Instead, she vanished under married surname:

Renata Maren Cole.

Then investigation against her quietly closed for lack evidence.

Dante never knew.

Javier told him:

“She got away.”

Again.

He controlled narrative.

Then Samantha asked Dante:

“Why didn’t you verify?”

He looked down.

“Because my wife had just died and Javier handled everything.”

No excuse.

Context.

Then one more file.

Sofia’s note:

Dante delegates when grief overwhelms him. Javier knows this.

May you like

He closed eyes.

His dead wife knew him too well.
