Chapter 3 - The Man In The Hospital PhotographArthur's investigator identified the man.

Victor Lang.
Arthur's former business partner.
They had built their first hotel together.
Victor had been beside him during the company's expansion.
He had attended Eleanor's funeral.
He had visited Arthur after the accident.
And Arthur had trusted him.
For thirty years.
Arthur stared at the photograph.
“Why would Victor want Grace dead?”
The investigator shook his head.
“We don't know.”
“Find out.”
Arthur invited Victor to dinner.
He said nothing about the photograph.
Nothing about Grace.
Nothing about Lydia.
Victor arrived at seven.
He smiled.
“Arthur.”
Arthur watched him walk into the dining room.
“You're looking well.”
Victor laughed.
“I wish I could say the same.”
Arthur looked at him.
“I walked today.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
“For how long?”
“Three steps.”
Victor stared.
Then forced a laugh.
“Well…”
He raised his glass.
“That's wonderful.”
Arthur watched his hands.
They were shaking.
Dinner continued.
Arthur asked casual questions.
Business.
Real estate.
The old days.
Then he mentioned Eleanor.
Victor became quiet.
“Did you know Lydia Carter?”
Victor almost dropped his fork.
Arthur noticed.
“Yes.”
“How?”
Victor looked at him.
“Why are you asking?”
“Because she knew Eleanor.”
Victor smiled nervously.
“A lot of people knew Eleanor.”
“Did she know Grace?”
Silence.
Victor's face changed.
Arthur leaned forward.
“Who is Grace?”
Victor swallowed.
“You're asking the wrong question.”
Arthur's voice became cold.
“What question should I ask?”
Victor looked toward the hallway.
“Where is the baby now?”
Arthur froze.
“You knew about her.”
Victor stood.
“I have to go.”
Arthur's security team blocked the door.
Victor looked at him.
“Arthur, listen to me.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Years.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Victor's expression became bitter.
“Because Eleanor begged me not to.”
Arthur stared.
“Why?”
“Because she knew what would happen if you remembered.”
“Remembered what?”
Victor said nothing.
Arthur grabbed the photograph.
“This.”
Victor looked at it.
Then closed his eyes.
“You shouldn't have found that.”
Victor finally confessed.
Twenty-two years earlier, Arthur had been involved in a medical research project.
It wasn't supposed to be secret.
Arthur had funded it.
The project studied neurological recovery.
Lydia was one of the young researchers.
She discovered something unexpected.
Certain neurological responses could be triggered through contact with an infant who had been exposed to a rare experimental treatment during pregnancy.
Arthur had been one of the test subjects.
He had developed unusual nerve responses.
But the project was abandoned.
Arthur forgot about it.
Then the accident happened.
His spinal cord was severely damaged.
Doctors assumed he would never walk.
But Eleanor knew about the research.
She believed the treatment could still work.
And Grace…
had inherited the biological response.
Arthur stared.
“So Grace can heal me?”
Victor shook his head.
“Not exactly.”
“What then?”
“Her touch stimulates your nervous system.”
“That's why my foot moved.”
“Yes.”
Arthur looked toward the nursery.
“But why does she have this ability?”
Victor lowered his voice.
“Because of Lydia.”
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
“What did Lydia do?”
“She continued the research.”
“Without me?”
“Yes.”
“And Eleanor helped her.”
“Yes.”
Arthur suddenly understood.
“My wife knew.”
“She knew everything.”
“Why hide it?”
Victor hesitated.
“Because Lydia discovered the research was being misused.”
“By whom?”
Victor looked directly at Arthur.
“Your board.”
Arthur froze.
“My board?”
“They wanted to weaponize the technology.”
Arthur felt sick.
“For what?”
Victor didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Arthur understood the implications.
A treatment capable of manipulating neurological responses could be worth billions.
Whoever controlled it could control an entire industry.
Victor handed Arthur a flash drive.
“This is everything Lydia discovered.”
Arthur took it.
“Why give it to me now?”
“Because the people who wanted it are coming.”
“Who?”
Victor looked toward the nursery.
“Everyone.”
That night, Arthur opened the files.
There were research papers.
Financial records.
Medical scans.
And a video.
Lydia appeared on screen.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Arthur, if you're watching this…”
She paused.
“You need to know that Grace is not a miracle.”
Arthur leaned closer.
“She is your granddaughter.”
His entire body froze.
“My what?”
The video continued.
“Eleanor never told you.”
“Neither did I.”
“But Grace carries something from your family.”
Arthur stared.
“Your son.”
He stopped breathing.
“My son?”
Lydia continued:
“Grace's father is the child you were told died before you ever met him.”
Arthur's hands began shaking.
A photograph appeared on the screen.
A newborn boy.
And beside him…
a young Arthur.
Arthur whispered:
“No…”
Then Lydia said the words that changed everything.
“Your family has another heir.”
The screen went black.
At that exact moment, the mansion alarm began screaming.
Arthur ran toward the nursery.
The window was open.
Grace was gone.
Eli was lying unconscious beside the crib.
Arthur's heart stopped.
Someone had taken the baby.
May you like
And on the floor beside the crib was a note.
If you want Grace back, bring the original research.
