Chapter 8 - Elena’s ChoiceBy the time Sophie turned thirteen, everyone had stopped asking whether Julian and Elena would reconcile.

Because for years, answer was no.

They co-parented well.

They attended events.

Shared holidays sometimes.

But no romance.

Then one rainy evening, Elena’s car broke down.

Irony.

Julian picked her up.

She hated it.

“Do not make a joke about brakes.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“You were.”

“Yes.”

They laughed.

First time accident could exist without swallowing room.

That mattered.

They had dinner.

Then another.

Not secret.

Sophie noticed immediately.

“You’re dating.”

“No.”

“You’re wearing perfume.”

Elena stared.

Teenagers.

Eventually yes.

Dating.

Slow.

No grand “love never died.”

Love did change.

They built something new.

Elena said:

“I will never marry into Ashford control again.”

Julian answered:

“Then don’t.”

Years later, they did marry? Maybe not. Could choose domestic partnership or remarriage with prenup and independent finances. Let's make later remarriage on their terms for satisfying but grounded.

At Sophie’s college graduation, Julian proposed privately? Maybe too much. Better Elena proposed a remarriage condition after years.

They married in a courthouse.

Six guests.

No chandeliers.

Sophie wore sneakers.

Julian laughed at symmetry.

Elena said:

“If any child runs in with a phone, I’m leaving.”

Sophie said:

“I’m twenty-one.”

“Still.”

Good.

Before signing, Elena read every document.

So did Julian.

Independent lawyers.

No family trust changes tied.

No corporate votes.

Marriage.

Just marriage.

That itself felt radical in their world.

Serena, by then released? Maybe serving still. Not relevant.

Sophie grew into adult who hated public attention.

Studied documentary film? Because evidence? Could be too derivative. Maybe biomedical engineering. Keep unrelated to trauma to avoid destiny.

She chose marine biology.

Julian delighted.

“No finance?”

“Gross.”

Elena laughed.

She worked on coral restoration.

Good.

At twenty-six, Sophie finally watched full wedding video from day she interrupted.

Not crime clips.

Wedding footage.

She saw herself barefoot.

Running.

Screaming.

Serena lunging.

Julian going white.

She paused.

“I looked tiny.”

Elena nodded.

“You were.”

“Did I understand?”

“Not really.”

“Good.”

Then final seconds after phone reveal:

Caroline carried her away.

Sophie remembered that.

“Aunt Caroline gave me chocolate.”

Priorities.

She asked Julian:

“Do you wish I hadn’t been there?”

He thought.

“I wish you never had to see it.”

“Different.”

“Yes.”

“Do you wish someone else found phone?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were eight.”

She nodded.

Then:

“But I’m glad truth came out.”

“So am I.”

May you like

Both.

No contradiction.
