Chapter 9 - What Serena Finally AdmittedSerena contacted Sophie once after release.

Through attorneys.

Sophie was twenty-nine.

Her choice.

She agreed to one meeting.

Public therapeutic setting.

Julian did not attend.

Elena offered.

Sophie said no.

She wanted her own conversation.

Serena entered older.

No luxury armor.

No wedding mythology.

Just woman.

Sophie asked:

“Why did you keep the phone?”

Serena smiled sadly.

“Because I didn’t trust Victor.”

“Then why trust him at all?”

“I wanted what he could give me.”

“My dad?”

“Access to him.”

“Money?”

“Yes.”

“Status?”

“Yes.”

“And love?”

Serena looked down.

“I thought if Julian chose me, I would become someone nobody could dismiss.”

Sophie frowned.

“Who dismissed you?”

“My father. My sister. People.”

“Then why hurt my mom?”

Serena cried.

“Because I turned my pain into permission.”

Good answer.

“Did you know I existed before?”

“Yes.”

“Did you care?”

“I told myself children adjust.”

Sophie’s face hardened.

“That’s something adults say when they want kids to absorb their choices.”

Serena looked at her.

“Yes.”

Then Sophie asked:

“Why did you grab the phone?”

“Panic.”

“Did you think you could still marry him?”

“For about five seconds.”

Honest.

Sophie almost laughed.

Then:

“Did you ever really love him?”

Serena thought.

“I loved what being loved by him did to how I saw myself.”

Not same.

“That’s not him.”

“No.”

There.

Then Sophie said:

“I don’t forgive you.”

Serena nodded.

“I know.”

“But I’m not angry all the time.”

“That’s good.”

“I didn’t come for you.”

“What?”

“I came because I didn’t want the eight-year-old version of me to keep asking questions.”

Serena cried.

Sophie stood.

Meeting over.

No hug.

Good.

She told Julian later only:

“I got answers.”

He did not ask details.

Her story.

Boundary.

Growth.
