Chapter 6: The Truth Lily Was Forced to Carry

The word *Daddy* should have been the happiest sound I had ever heard.

Instead, it broke something inside me.

Because Lily had said it with fear.

Not joy.

Not excitement.

Fear.

She was afraid of what I would think.

Afraid of what I would do.

A four-year-old child was standing in my bedroom, holding a secret that had haunted adults for seven years.

I slowly lowered the document in my hand.

The birth certificate.

The one Vincent had used like a weapon.

“Lily.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes?””

I forced my voice to stay calm.

“Come here.””

She hesitated.

For a moment, I thought she wouldn’t move.

Then Norah gently touched her shoulder.

“It’s okay.””

Lily walked toward me.

Every step was careful.

Every step reminded me of the hallway downstairs.

The damaged floor.

The ignored request.

The child who had been taught to apologize for needing help.

When she reached me, I knelt down.

“Look at me.””

She slowly raised her eyes.

“Are you angry?””

The question cut deeper than anything Vincent had said.

“Why would I be angry?””

She squeezed her rabbit.

“Because Mommy said you might.””

I swallowed.

“Your mother said that?””

She nodded.

“She said you were a good man.””

The words surprised me.

“She did?””

“Yes.””

Lily looked down.

“But she said good people can get hurt when they learn the truth.””

Behind her, Evelyn covered her mouth.

Vincent remained silent.

I looked at him.

“You knew about this.””

His expression was unreadable.

“I knew what Anna told me.””

“What did she tell you?””

“That Lily wasn’t yours.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked at Lily.

Then back at him.

“And you believed her?””

Vincent shrugged.

“DNA doesn’t lie.””

I stared at the paper.

There was something wrong.

Not with the document.

With the timing.

With the way he had revealed it.

Vincent had spent years hiding the truth.

Now, suddenly, he wanted me to know.

People didn’t expose secrets unless they benefited from it.

“What do you want?””

His eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

I stepped closer.

“You didn’t bring this out because you wanted honesty.””

Silence.

“You brought it out because you need something.””

For a second, his confidence disappeared.

Then he smiled.

“You always were suspicious.””

“No.””

I looked at the hidden room.

“At first, I trusted people.””

My eyes returned to him.

“Then I learned better.””

Vincent walked toward the desk.

“Fine.””

He picked up another folder.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then understand this.””

He placed the folder down.

“Anna betrayed you.””

My jaw tightened.

“Be careful.””

“I’m telling you what happened.””

“No. You’re telling me your version.””

He ignored that.

“Anna found out she was pregnant before you two got married.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Vincent.””

He continued.

“She was already carrying Lily when she met you.””

I stared at him.

The room felt unreal.

A thousand memories came rushing back.

Anna laughing in our kitchen.

Anna holding my hand.

Anna crying when we thought we might never have children.

Was all of it a lie?

No.

My mind rejected it immediately.

Because I knew Anna.

Or I thought I did.

“What was her plan?”” I asked quietly.

Vincent looked surprised.

“What?””

“If she knew Lily wasn’t mine, what was her plan?””

He paused.

That was not the question he expected.

I continued.

“Why marry me?””

Vincent didn’t answer.

Because there was no easy answer.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Because Anna loved you.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know that.””

“I knew her better than you did.””

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“Did you?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“I knew she cried every night because she was afraid you would leave if you knew.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Evelyn looked at Lily.

“Because of him.””

She pointed at Vincent.

“He found out first.””

Vincent’s face changed.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice became stronger.

“You threatened her.””

“I warned her.””

“You told her Marco would destroy everything.””

Vincent scoffed.

“He deserved to know.””

“He did.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“But not like that.””

I turned to Vincent.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

And suddenly I understood.

The birth certificate.

The hidden room.

The missing money.

Anna’s disappearance.

They weren’t separate.

They were pieces of a fight that had started before I even knew there was a war.

I opened the folder Vincent had placed on the desk.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Messages.

And one letter.

A letter addressed to me.

My hands froze.

“Where did you get this?””

Vincent looked away.

“Anna wrote it.””

I picked it up.

The envelope was old.

My name was written in her handwriting.

I opened it carefully.

The first line destroyed me.

*Marco,*

*If you are reading this, then Lily finally knows the truth.*

*And I hope you are reading this because I am there beside you.*

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

I continued.

*I need you to know something before anyone else tells you a different story.*

*Lily is not your biological daughter.*

I closed my eyes.

Even though I already knew.

Seeing the words from Anna hurt differently.

Because she had known.

She had been carrying this.

I forced myself to continue.

*But she is my daughter.*

*And she is the child I would have trusted you to love even if biology said otherwise.*

My breathing slowed.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me.

Waiting for rejection.

Waiting for abandonment.

I continued reading.

*The man who fathered Lily is someone dangerous.*

*Someone who has already hurt people to protect his secrets.*

*I cannot tell you his name yet because I don’t know who I can trust.*

*But I need you to understand one thing.*

*I did not marry you because I needed a father for my child.*

*I married you because I loved you.*

The letter shook in my hands.

I looked at Vincent.

He looked away.

The confidence was gone.

I turned the page.

*If something happens to me, please do not punish Lily for a truth she did not choose.*

*She is innocent.*

*She deserves kindness.*

*She deserves a home.*

I stopped reading.

Because the next sentence was written differently.

The handwriting was rushed.

Almost panicked.

*Marco, I finally know who Lily’s father is.*

*And I know why he has been trying to keep her hidden.*

My heart started racing.

I turned the page.

The rest of the letter was only one sentence.

A sentence that explained everything.

*Lily’s father is not a stranger.*

The paper ended there.

No name.

No explanation.

Nothing.

I looked up.

“Where is the rest?””

Nobody answered.

“Where is the rest?””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

Vincent said nothing.

Then Lily spoke.

“He took it.””

I turned.

“What?””

She hugged her rabbit.

“The bad man took Mommy’s letter.””

My voice softened.

“Who?””

She looked toward Vincent.

Then quickly looked away.

I felt my blood turn cold.

Vincent noticed.

“You’re going to believe a child?””

I looked at Lily.

Then at him.

“Yes.””

His face tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she’s the only person in this house who has been telling the truth without gaining anything from it.””

For the first time, Vincent looked defeated.

But only briefly.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

He answered.

“Speak.””

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But we saw Vincent listening.

Then his eyes moved toward Lily.

“No,” he said quietly.

A pause.

Then:

“She knows.””

My body went still.

He hung up.

I stepped forward.

“Who was that?””

Vincent looked at me.

And for the first time, he looked genuinely worried.

“That was the person you should have been afraid of from the beginning.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at the hidden room.

At Anna’s evidence.

At the secrets she had died trying to expose.

Then he said:

“The person who paid Evelyn to move the money.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Vincent’s voice dropped.

“And the person who made sure Anna disappeared.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Who?””

He looked directly at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your father.””
