Chapter 9: The Lie That Protected Us All
The paper shook in my hand.
Not because I doubted what I was reading.
Because I finally understood the size of the lie.
Seven years.
Seven years of grief.
Seven years of wondering why Anna left me.
Seven years of believing Lily belonged to someone else.
And all this time, someone had hidden the truth.
Not because they wanted to protect Lily.
Not because they wanted to protect Anna.
Because they wanted to control me.
I looked at the DNA report again.
*Biological relationship: Father.*
My eyes burned.
I didn’t know whether I wanted to laugh or scream.
Because the truth was supposed to bring relief.
But sometimes the truth arrives carrying all the pain of the years you lost.
Lily watched me carefully.
She didn’t understand the documents.
She didn’t understand DNA.
She only understood one thing.
She was waiting to see if I would leave.
I folded the report slowly.
Then I knelt down.
“Lily.””
She stepped closer.
“Are you still my daddy?””
The question broke me.
Not because I didn’t know the answer.
Because she had to ask.
I placed my hand gently on her shoulder.
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Even now?””
“Especially now.””
She looked confused.
“Why?””
I smiled sadly.
“Because I spent seven years not knowing the truth.””
I glanced at the report.
“But I never needed this paper to love you.””
A small sob escaped her.
Then she moved forward and hugged me.
Carefully.
Like she was afraid I would disappear.
I held her.
And for the first time in seven years, something inside me felt like it had returned to where it belonged.
My family.
Behind us, nobody spoke.
Until Vincent finally whispered:
“I don’t understand.””
I stood slowly.
“You don’t understand what?””
He looked at the report.
“You were the father.””
“Yes.””
“But Anna told me…”
He stopped.
I turned.
“What did Anna tell you?””
Vincent looked away.
“She said Lily’s father was someone else.””
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Vincent.””
His face tightened.
“Adrian.””
The name hung in the room.
I looked at the photograph.
The man my father had erased.
The man connected to all these secrets.
“You believed Lily was Adrian’s child?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Anna told me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Vincent looked at me.
“What?””
“Anna never told you that.””
His expression changed.
“How do you know?””
“Because Anna knew the truth.””
I held up the DNA report.
“She knew Lily was mine.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Marco…”
I looked at her.
“Tell me.””
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Anna found the original test results.””
“The ones proving I was Lily’s father?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“In the hidden room.””
I looked around.
“But they weren’t here.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Anna removed them.””
“Why would she do that?””
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“Because she wanted to keep you alive.””
The words made no sense.
“How does hiding my own daughter protect me?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because the person hunting Anna believed Lily was Adrian’s daughter.””
I froze.
“What?””
She nodded.
“Your father and his partners were terrified of Adrian’s child.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian left something behind.””
“The trust documents.””
“Yes.””
“And they thought Lily had them?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the report.
Everything changed.
They weren’t hunting Lily because she was Vincent’s daughter.
They were hunting her because they thought she carried proof.
Proof of a crime.
Proof that could destroy an empire.
I turned toward Vincent.
“You knew they were searching for Adrian’s child.””
“Yes.””
“And you let them believe Lily was that child.””
His face fell.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You were protecting yourself.””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
A sudden sound came from downstairs.
A door opening.
Everyone froze.
Norah immediately moved toward Lily.
“Stay here.””
I looked at the hallway.
“We have company.””
Evelyn’s face went pale.
“She found us.””
“Who?””
Before she answered, a woman appeared at the top of the stairs.
She looked around sixty.
Elegant.
Controlled.
The kind of person who never needed to raise her voice because everyone listened anyway.
Her eyes moved across the room.
First to Vincent.
Then Evelyn.
Then me.
Finally, Lily.
“So.””
Her voice was calm.
“The little girl survived.””
I stepped in front of Lily.
“Who are you?””
The woman smiled.
“You really don’t know?””
“No.””
She sighed.
“Your father always said you were too trusting.””
My blood went cold.
“You knew my father.””
“I knew him very well.””
She walked closer.
“My name is Clara Vale.””
The photograph.
The woman beside my father.
Adrian’s family.
I stared at her.
“Adrian Vale’s daughter.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“You’re the person behind all this.””
She laughed softly.
“No.””
She looked around.
“I’m the person cleaning up the mess your family created.””
I almost laughed.
“By hiding children?””
“By preventing worse damage.””
“Where is Anna?””
Her expression changed.
A small flicker.
But it was there.
“You still believe Anna is innocent.””
“I know she is.””
“No.””
Clara looked at me.
“You know the version she wanted you to know.””
I stepped closer.
“Where is my wife?””
She reached into her bag.
My body tensed.
But she didn’t pull out a weapon.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Anna’s handwriting.
Again.
My heart stopped.
“She wrote this after she escaped.””
I stared.
“Escaped from where?””
Clara looked toward Vincent.
“Ask him.””
Everyone turned.
Vincent’s face changed.
“Marco…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
Clara smiled.
“You still don’t know.””
“Know what?””
She held up the envelope.
“Who actually helped Anna disappear.””
I looked at Vincent.
“No.””
Clara’s voice remained calm.
“Yes.””
The room felt impossible.
“You.””
I stared at my brother.
“You helped her?””
Vincent looked broken.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
“Why?””
His voice was quiet.
“Because I realized my father was going to kill her.””
Nobody moved.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried to stop him.””
“By hiding her?””
“Yes.””
My anger rose.
“You let me suffer.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I know.””
“You let me believe she abandoned me.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe Lily wasn’t mine.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“But if I told you the truth, you would have gone after her.””
“And?””
“You would have died too.””
The room went silent.
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted to believe he was only selfish.
But the truth was more complicated.
He had done terrible things.
And maybe he had also tried to prevent something worse.
Clara stepped forward.
“You don’t have time to debate family feelings.””
I looked at her.
“Where is Anna?””
She handed me the envelope.
“She is waiting.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere your father built.””
My stomach tightened.
“Built what?””
“A place where secrets could disappear.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single note.
Anna’s handwriting.
Only one sentence.
*Marco, if you found this, then they know about Lily. Run to the old estate before they reach her.*
My hands went cold.
The old estate.
My father’s abandoned property outside the city.
The place nobody had visited in years.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
A photo.
Anna.
But this time, she wasn’t alone.
A man stood behind her.
An older man.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who had been dead for three years.
My father’s former security chief.
Below the picture were five words.
*Your father’s last secret lives.*
I looked at Vincent.
“Who has Anna?””
His face turned pale.
And he whispered:
“Not who.””
A pause.
“Where.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Vincent looked toward the window.
Toward the darkness outside.
Then he said:
“Anna isn’t being held by someone.””
“She’s being held by something your father built.””
My phone buzzed again.
A location appeared.
The old estate.
And beneath it:
May you like
*Come alone, Marco.*
*Or Anna disappears forever.*
