Chapter 3: The Envelope
Maya opened the message.
Marcus stood beside her, staring at the screen.
Vanessa remained several feet away, crying silently.
The phone displayed a photograph.
An envelope.
The same envelope from the video.
But this time, it was open.
Inside was a stack of documents.
Marcus recognized his own signature.
His throat tightened.
“Where did you get that?””
Maya looked at him.
“From Vanessa.””
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“No.””
“You gave it to me.””
“I never gave you anything.””
Maya turned the screen toward Marcus.
“Look at the date.””
Marcus read it.
His wedding date.
Today.
Then he noticed something else.
The document wasn't a marriage certificate.
It was a financial authorization form.
His signature appeared at the bottom.
Marcus felt cold.
“I didn't sign this.””
Vanessa whispered, “Yes, you did.””
“No.””
“You did.””
“I would remember.””
“You signed it yesterday.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Yesterday?””
Vanessa nodded.
“At the rehearsal.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You gave me a folder and told me it was the venue paperwork.””
“I thought—”
“You knew.””
Vanessa looked down.
Maya spoke quietly.
“She knew exactly what it was.””
Vanessa snapped her head up.
“Stop.””
Maya didn't stop.
“She wasn't trying to marry you.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What was she trying to do?””
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“You were going to leave me.””
Marcus stared at her.
“So you decided to take my money?””
“No!””
“You just admitted it.””
“I didn't!””
Maya stepped between them.
“Marcus, the document gives her control over the account.””
Marcus looked back at the phone.
His chest tightened.
“How much?””
Maya hesitated.
Vanessa answered.
“Three million.””
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Three million dollars.
Money he had spent years building.
Money his father had left behind.
Money Vanessa knew he intended to protect.
He opened his eyes.
“You knew about the account.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“You told me.””
“I told you the account existed.””
“I thought you trusted me.””
“I did.””
Her tears spilled faster.
“Then why would you do this?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You could have asked.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you'd realize I'm not enough.””
For a second, Marcus said nothing.
The anger in his face softened.
Not because he forgave her.
Because he remembered all the nights Vanessa had told him she was afraid of losing him.
Then Maya spoke.
“That's not the whole story.””
Marcus turned.
“What else?””
Vanessa’s expression changed immediately.
“Maya.””
Maya held up the phone.
“There's another recording.””
Vanessa rushed toward her.
“Don't.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Stay back.””
Vanessa stopped.
“Maya,” Marcus said, “play it.””
Maya tapped the screen.
At first, there was only muffled ballroom noise.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“We need him to sign before the ceremony.””
The unidentified man answered.
“And if he doesn't?””
“He will.””
“You sound confident.””
“I know Marcus.””
A pause.
Then the man asked, “And after the wedding?””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“After the wedding, the money moves.””
Marcus’s jaw clenched.
The recording continued.
The man said, “And what about the waitress?””
Vanessa’s recorded voice became colder.
“She won't be a problem.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
Maya didn't react.
The recording ended.
Vanessa covered her face.
Marcus whispered, “Who is that man?””
She lowered her hands.
“I can't tell you.””
“You have five seconds.””
“Marcus—”
“Five.””
Vanessa cried harder.
“Four.””
“Please.””
“Three.””
Maya suddenly looked toward the ballroom entrance.
Marcus followed her gaze.
Nobody stood there.
Then Maya whispered, “He's here.””
Marcus turned back.
“What?””
Maya stared past him.
“He came to the wedding.””
Vanessa’s face went completely white.
Marcus slowly looked across the crowd.
Guests.
Servers.
Family.
Friends.
No obvious stranger.
Then a man near the rear doors stepped away from the wall.
Black suit.
Dark tie.
One hand inside his jacket.
Marcus stared at him.
The man stared back.
Vanessa whispered one word.
“Derrick.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“You know him.””
She couldn't speak.
Maya’s phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID showed a name.
*DERRICK.*
The man across the ballroom raised his phone.
It was ringing.
Marcus looked from the phone to the man.
Then back to Vanessa.
“Why is the man you're lying about calling Maya?””
Vanessa took one step backward.
Derrick started walking toward them.
And in his hand was another envelope.
“Marcus,” Maya whispered, “whatever happens next, don't let Vanessa touch that envelope.””
Derrick stopped ten feet away.
He looked directly at Marcus.
May you like
Then smiled.
“You really should've asked your bride what she promised me.””
