Chapter 5: The Woman in White

The woman stepped into the light.

She was Black, dressed in an elegant white evening gown, her expression calm enough to make Marcus more nervous.

Vanessa stopped crying.

Her entire body went rigid.

Marcus looked from the woman to the photograph in his hand.

Then back again.

“Who are you?””

The woman didn't answer immediately.

She looked at Vanessa.

“I'm sorry.””

Vanessa whispered, “You weren't supposed to come.””

Marcus's heart sank.

“You know her.””

Vanessa said nothing.

The woman finally looked at Marcus.

“My name is Rochelle.””

Marcus waited.

“Rochelle what?””

“Rochelle Davis.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Rochelle, please.””

Rochelle raised a hand.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“But you don't get to ask me for anything anymore.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

Maya was watching Rochelle carefully.

“You knew she was here?””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Rochelle walked toward Marcus.

She held out her hand.

“May I see the photograph?””

Marcus gave it to her.

She looked at it.

Then smiled sadly.

“They finally gave you this.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Rochelle looked toward Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa whispered, “Rochelle…”

“Tell him.””

Marcus turned to Vanessa.

“Tell me what?””

Rochelle answered.

“She hired me.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“For what?””

Vanessa looked down.

Rochelle sighed.

“To investigate you.””

The words landed harder than Marcus expected.

“You investigated me?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“It wasn't supposed to go this far.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Why?””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That you were hiding something.””

Rochelle nodded.

“She believed you had another woman.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

Then back at Rochelle.

“And did I?””

“No.””

“Then what did you find?””

Rochelle glanced at Vanessa.

“That depends on which truth you want first.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“All of them.””

Rochelle reached into her purse.

Vanessa immediately shouted.

“No!””

Rochelle pulled out a folder.

She placed it on the table.

Marcus opened it.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Messages.

Names.

Dates.

His own name appeared repeatedly.

But another name appeared even more often.

*Vanessa Carter.*

Marcus turned a page.

There were transfers from Vanessa's personal account to Derrick.

Thousands of dollars.

Then another page.

A payment to a private investigator.

Rochelle.

Marcus looked up.

“You paid Rochelle to investigate me.””

“Yes.””

“And what did she find?””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

Rochelle answered.

“That Marcus was exactly who he said he was.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rochelle's expression softened.

“He wasn't cheating.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He wasn't hiding money.””

Rochelle looked directly at Marcus.

“And he wasn't planning to leave Vanessa.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Then why investigate me?””

Rochelle looked at Vanessa.

“That is what I couldn't understand.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“I thought you had another family.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What?””

“I found a woman's name on one of your old documents.””

“What woman's name?””

“Rochelle Davis.””

Marcus looked at Rochelle.

“You're the woman on the document?””

Rochelle nodded.

“I am.””

Vanessa began crying again.

“I thought she was your secret.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She was my father's attorney.””

Rochelle nodded.

“After his death, I handled the estate.””

Marcus looked down.

Something clicked.

The old trust.

The account.

The money.

The paperwork.

His father's final instructions.

Rochelle had been involved from the beginning.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You knew about the inheritance.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“How much did you know?””

“All of it.””

Marcus stepped back.

Rochelle opened the folder again.

“There’s something else.””

She removed a document.

“This is the original trust.””

Marcus scanned it.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Rochelle pointed to a paragraph.

“Your father created a condition.””

Marcus read it twice.

If the beneficiary married someone who attempted to access the protected funds through deception, the trust would automatically be frozen and transferred to a secondary beneficiary.

Marcus looked up.

“Who is the secondary beneficiary?””

Rochelle didn't answer.

Vanessa suddenly whispered, “No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know.””

She shook her head.

“No, I don't.””

Rochelle turned the page.

“The name is here.””

Marcus stared down.

His pulse started pounding.

The name beneath the clause wasn't Derrick.

It wasn't Rochelle.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It was someone Marcus had never expected.

Before he could read it aloud, Maya suddenly grabbed his wrist.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

She pointed toward the ballroom entrance.

Derrick was standing there again.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

A security guard stood beside him.

And the guard was holding Marcus's wedding ring.

Marcus looked down at his own hand.

His ring was still there.

His eyes widened.

“That's impossible.””

Maya whispered, “Look at the guard.””

Marcus did.

The guard slowly removed his sunglasses.

Marcus recognized him.

Not from the wedding.

From somewhere much closer.

The guard was the man who had delivered Vanessa's wedding invitation to Marcus's house.

And now he was holding a second envelope.

He raised it.

“Marcus,” the guard called.

“I was told to give you this only if the ceremony reached this point.””

Marcus walked toward him.

“What point?””

The guard looked at Vanessa.

Then at Maya.

Then back at Marcus.

“The point where she realizes you know about the account.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus stopped.

The guard extended the envelope.

“Your father left instructions.””

Marcus took it.

On the front were six words:

*OPEN THIS AFTER SHE SAYS YES.*

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“I never received this.””

Vanessa's face went blank.

Because the wedding ceremony had already happened.

May you like

And suddenly Marcus understood.

Someone had intercepted his father's final letter before he ever saw it.
