Chapter 6: The Signature That Should Not Exist

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

I just stared at the paper.

The signature at the bottom looked familiar.

Too familiar.

Not because I had seen it recently.

Because I had seen that handwriting for years.

On birthday cards.

On Christmas gifts.

On documents.

On every piece of paperwork connected to my family.

*Michael.*

My brother-in-law.

The man who hugged me at Daniel’s funeral.

The man who told me he would always protect Lily.

The man who had sat across from me and watched me grieve.

His name was on a custody document.

A document he had no right to sign.

I pushed the paper away.

“No.””

Michael didn’t move.

“Robert—”

“No.””

My voice came out lower than I expected.

“This isn’t possible.””

“It is.””

“You signed custody papers for my granddaughter?””

His face tightened.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

I laughed quietly.

“You don’t accidentally sign legal documents involving a child.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me why.””

Michael looked down.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked ashamed.

“I thought I was helping Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“Helping him?””

“Yes.””

“You helped someone prepare to take his daughter?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I never wanted Lily taken away from Daniel.””

“Then what did you want?””

Michael leaned forward.

“I wanted to stop Vanessa.””

The anger inside me paused.

Only for a moment.

“Explain.””

He looked around the café.

The people at nearby tables were talking.

Coffee machines were running.

Someone laughed near the counter.

A normal afternoon.

But my world had changed.

Michael lowered his voice.

“Daniel came to me two months before he died.””

“Why?””

“He was scared.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“My son?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Michael rubbed his hands together.

“He said Vanessa was planning something. He believed she was trying to gain control over Lily’s trust account.””

I already knew about the account.

But hearing Daniel’s fear from someone else made it real.

“He asked me to help him.””

“Help him do what?””

“Create a backup plan.””

I frowned.

“A backup plan?””

“If something happened to him.””

The words sat between us.

I hated how many times people had said that sentence.

If something happened to him.

As if everyone knew my son was walking toward danger except me.

“What kind of backup plan?””

Michael opened the folder.

Inside were more documents.

“This.””

He pulled out another paper.

A temporary guardianship agreement.

My name was written on it.

My hands stopped moving.

“Me?””

Daniel had named me?

Michael nodded.

“He wanted Lily protected by someone he trusted.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he believed Vanessa was watching him.””

I looked at the document.

“He could have talked to me.””

Michael looked away.

“Robert…”

“What?””

“He thought you would confront her.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

If Daniel had told me Vanessa was trying to take Lily, I would have gone straight to her.

I would have demanded answers.

I would have started a war.

And maybe Daniel knew that would make things worse.

Michael continued.

“He said you loved too loudly.””

I looked up.

“What?””

A sad smile crossed Michael’s face.

“He said you had a good heart, but you couldn’t hide your anger when someone hurt your family.””

That sounded exactly like my son.

I looked back at the document.

“What happened after this?””

Michael was silent.

“That’s the part you don’t want to hear.””

“Tell me.””

“Vanessa found out.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why did she move so quickly?””

Michael sighed.

“Because someone told her.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

I leaned forward.

“Who?””

Michael looked directly at me.

“Me.””

The café noise seemed to disappear.

“You told her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I thought I was preventing something worse.””

My hands tightened.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I know.””

“Everyone says they were protecting Lily.””

“I know.””

“But somehow she ended up afraid to eat bread.””

Michael looked down.

He had no answer.

Good.

Because there wasn’t one.

I stood up.

“Robert—”

“I’m leaving.””

“Please.””

I stopped.

“Why should I listen to you?””

“Because Daniel trusted me.””

I turned around.

“Did he?””

Michael looked at the paper.

“He did at first.””

That answer bothered me.

“What does that mean?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he said:

“It means the last conversation Daniel and I had was not a good one.””

I sat back down.

“Tell me.””

Michael swallowed.

“The night before Daniel died, he called me.””

“What did he say?””

“He said he knew someone had betrayed him.””

My heart began racing.

“Who?””

“He didn’t say.””

“Why?””

“Because he wasn’t sure.””

I stared at him.

“He suspected someone close.””

Michael’s eyes met mine.

“Very close.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Was it you?””

Michael looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I had signed the first document.””

“You just told me you were helping him.””

“I was.””

“Then why would he suspect you?””

Michael took a deep breath.

“Because from Daniel’s perspective, I had done the one thing he asked me not to do.””

“What?””

“Talk to Vanessa.””

I froze.

“You met with Vanessa before he died?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To convince her to stop.””

“And instead?””

“She convinced me she was right.””

I stared.

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“She showed me evidence that Daniel had hidden things from everyone.””

“Like what?””

“Financial problems.””

I frowned.

“Daniel had debts?””

“No.””

Michael looked conflicted.

“That’s the strange part.””

“What?””

“The documents she showed me were real.””

My stomach tightened.

“But?””

“But they weren’t what she claimed.””

I waited.

“She showed me transfers from the trust account.””

“What?””

Michael nodded.

“Money had been moved.””

“By who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why blame Vanessa?””

“Because the transfers happened after Daniel became suspicious.””

I felt overwhelmed.

Everyone had a piece of the truth.

But nobody had the whole thing.

Michael pulled out another document.

“This is the last thing Daniel gave me.””

I looked at it.

It was a bank statement.

The trust account.

I scanned the numbers.

Then stopped.

A withdrawal.

A large one.

The date was six days before Daniel died.

The person who authorized it was listed.

I looked closer.

And my heart sank.

Because the signature wasn’t Vanessa’s.

It wasn’t Daniel’s.

It wasn’t Michael’s.

It was mine.

I looked up.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

“I never touched that account.””

“I know.””

“Then why is my name there?””

“I don’t know.””

My hands shook.

Someone had used my identity.

Someone had moved money.

Someone had created documents.

And now someone was building a case against me.

I looked at Michael.

“Who knew about my information?””

He didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

He looked away.

That was when I realized.

He was afraid.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

“Who?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Vanessa.””

The name hung in the air.

But this time, something felt different.

Because Vanessa wasn’t just hiding something.

She was setting something up.

I left the café with the documents.

I didn’t go home immediately.

I drove around for nearly an hour.

Because I was afraid of what I would find.

Not outside.

Inside.

When I finally arrived, the front door was unlocked.

I froze.

I always locked it.

Always.

I stepped inside.

“Lily?””

No answer.

The house was too quiet.

I walked faster.

“Lily?””

Then I saw it.

The kitchen table.

Covered with papers.

My papers.

Daniel’s folder was open.

The hidden documents were spread across the surface.

Someone had been searching.

I ran upstairs.

“Lily!””

Her bedroom door was open.

Empty.

My heart nearly stopped.

Then I heard a sound from behind me.

A quiet voice.

“Grandpa?””

I turned.

Lily stood at the end of the hallway.

Her eyes were full of tears.

I rushed toward her.

“Where were you?””

She pointed toward the front door.

“I was outside.””

“Why?””

She looked scared.

“Because that man came again.””

My blood went cold.

“What man?””

“The one from my school.””

I looked outside.

A black car was parked near the driveway.

The same kind from the security footage.

“Where is he?””

Lily grabbed my hand.

“He left.””

“Did he say anything?””

She nodded.

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“He said…”

She stopped.

“Lily, what did he say?””

She looked up at me.

“He said he already had everything he needed.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What did he have?””

She whispered:

“My dad’s original custody papers.””

I turned toward the window.

The black car was gone.

But on the ground near the driveway was a white envelope.

I walked outside slowly.

Picked it up.

My name was written on the front.

I opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

A picture of Daniel.

Taken the night before he died.

May you like

And written on the back were six words.

*Your son knew who betrayed him.*
