Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Return
I read the name on my phone screen until the letters stopped looking real.
*Thomas Reed.*
My hands went cold.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
Thomas Reed had been gone for twenty years.
Everyone knew that.
Daniel knew that.
I knew that.
I remembered the day he disappeared.
The arguments.
The accusations.
The police reports.
The final conversation Daniel had with him.
And then nothing.
Thomas vanished.
Or at least, that was what we believed.
I sat down slowly.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
A thousand thoughts rushed through my mind.
Why would Lily draw him?
How did she know his name?
Why would Vanessa meet someone who was supposed to be gone?
And most importantly…
Why had Daniel been afraid of him?
I looked at the drawing again.
A child’s picture.
Simple lines.
A tall man.
A black jacket.
A name written above his head.
Children don’t invent names they have never heard.
Someone had introduced Thomas Reed back into our lives.
Someone had brought him close to Lily.
I grabbed my phone and searched through my old contacts.
I found the number I hadn’t called in years.
I hesitated.
Then pressed call.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a tired voice answered.
“Robert?””
I closed my eyes.
“Detective Harris.””
There was a pause.
“I haven’t heard that name in a long time.””
“I need to ask you something.””
“About what?””
“Thomas Reed.””
The silence that followed told me everything.
“You found something.””
“Did you know he was alive?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Robert, where are you?””
“Answer the question.””
“I need to know what happened.””
“I’m asking you if you knew.””
Detective Harris sighed.
“No.””
The answer should have comforted me.
It didn’t.
“Why did you react like that?””
“Because Thomas Reed was not someone who disappeared quietly.””
“What does that mean?””
“Robert…”
His voice lowered.
“You need to be careful.””
I looked toward Lily’s bedroom.
“She’s involved.””
“Who?””
“My granddaughter.””
The line went silent.
Then he said:
“Tell me everything.””
I did.
Not every detail.
Not yet.
But enough.
The hidden file.
The custody papers.
The stranger.
The drawing.
When I finished, Detective Harris didn’t speak for several seconds.
Finally, he said:
“Thomas Reed was investigated twenty years ago for financial fraud.””
“I remember.””
“No, you remember the public story.””
I frowned.
“What’s the private story?””
“He wasn’t just stealing money.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What else?””
“He was collecting information.””
“About who?””
“Families.””
The word felt strange.
“Why?””
“We never proved it.””
“But?””
“But Daniel believed Thomas was looking for something.””
I looked at the papers on my desk.
“The trust account.””
“Maybe.””
“Maybe?””
“Robert, Thomas was smart. He didn’t take things directly. He created situations where people gave him control.””
I thought about Vanessa.
The custody case.
The lies.
The documents.
“Like making someone lose custody?””
“Yes.””
My throat tightened.
“Thomas helped Vanessa?””
“I don’t know.””
“But it’s possible?””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“Where is he now?””
Another silence.
Then:
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not good enough.””
“It’s the truth.””
I gripped the phone.
“Detective, my granddaughter may be in danger.””
His voice changed immediately.
“Listen to me carefully.””
“What?””
“Do not confront him.””
“Why?””
“Because if Thomas is involved, he is already several steps ahead.””
I looked at the drawing.
A child had seen him.
A child had heard conversations adults thought she couldn’t understand.
“Then what do I do?””
“Find out why he came back.””
After the call ended, I stayed in my office.
Thinking.
Planning.
For the first time in days, I stopped reacting.
I started looking.
I searched Daniel’s documents again.
Not for Vanessa.
Not for custody.
For Thomas.
At first, I found nothing.
Then I noticed something.
A small handwritten note in the corner of one page.
A name.
*T.R.*
Below it:
*He knows about the account.*
I turned the page.
Another note.
*Vanessa thinks she is using him. She doesn’t understand who is controlling who.*
I stared at those words.
Daniel had known.
He had known Thomas was involved.
But why didn’t he tell me?
Because maybe he wasn’t trying to hide the truth from me.
Maybe he was trying to protect me from it.
A noise came from upstairs.
I immediately stood.
“Lily?””
No answer.
I walked quickly toward her room.
The door was open.
She was sitting on her bed.
Awake.
Holding her notebook.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked up.
“Grandpa.””
I sat beside her.
“Why are you awake?””
She looked nervous.
“I heard you talking.””
I brushed her hair back.
“Did you hear the name Thomas?””
Her eyes widened.
She nodded.
“How do you know him?””
She looked down.
“Mom told me not to say.””
My heart sank.
“Lily.””
“She said I would make things worse.””
“You won’t.””
She held the notebook tightly.
“He came to our house.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Many?””
She nodded.
“He talks to Mom in the kitchen.””
“What does he look like?””
“Like my drawing.””
“Does he ever talk to you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Once.””
I froze.
“What did he say?””
She whispered:
“He said I look just like my dad.””
I swallowed.
“Anything else?””
“He asked me if I knew where Grandpa kept the old papers.””
My blood ran cold.
“What papers?””
“I don’t know.””
“Lily, did he touch you?””
“No.””
“Did he scare you?””
She thought about it.
Then nodded.
“A little.””
“Why?””
“Because he smiled.””
I frowned.
“A smile scared you?””
She nodded.
“Because Mom smiles like that too.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Children notice things adults ignore.
Not facts.
Patterns.
I hugged her.
“You did the right thing telling me.””
She leaned against me.
“Are we leaving?””
“No.””
“But Mom said—”
“Your mom is wrong.””
I hated saying it.
But I couldn’t lie anymore.
Not to her.
Not when everyone else already had.
The next morning, I waited.
I knew Thomas would come.
I didn’t know how.
But people like him always came back when they believed they had control.
At 10:30, the doorbell rang.
I looked through the window.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Gray hair.
Black coat.
My heart stopped.
Because even after twenty years…
I recognized him.
Thomas Reed.
I opened the door but stayed between him and the house.
He looked at me.
Then smiled.
“Robert.””
Hearing my name from his mouth felt wrong.
“You’re alive.””
He nodded.
“I suppose I owe you an explanation.””
“You owe me more than that.””
His eyes moved past me.
Toward the hallway.
Toward Lily’s room.
I noticed.
And he noticed me noticing.
“You’re protective.””
“She’s my granddaughter.””
“Daniel was protective too.””
The mention of my son made my blood rise.
“What did you do to him?””
Thomas looked almost hurt.
“I didn’t kill Daniel.””
“I didn’t ask that.””
“You were thinking it.””
I stepped closer.
“Why are you here?””
He looked around the house.
“This place hasn’t changed.””
“Answer me.””
Thomas sighed.
“Daniel discovered something.””
“What?””
“He discovered Vanessa was not the person she pretended to be.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
That answer surprised me.
“I expect you to investigate.””
He reached into his coat.
I immediately tensed.
But he pulled out a small envelope.
“I came to give you this.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
Thomas looked directly at me.
“That Vanessa did not start this.””
My expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you have been looking at the wrong enemy.””
I stared at him.
“You worked with her.””
“Yes.””
“You met with her.””
“Yes.””
“You helped with the custody papers.””
His face remained calm.
“Yes.””
“Then why should I trust you?””
“You shouldn’t.””
The honesty was unsettling.
Thomas placed the envelope on the porch.
Then stepped back.
“Open it when you’re ready.””
I looked down.
“What’s inside?””
He paused.
“The reason Daniel stopped trusting everyone.””
Then he turned and walked away.
I watched him reach his car.
Before getting inside, he looked back.
And said one final thing.
“Robert.””
I didn’t answer.
“Ask Vanessa who Lily’s real father is.””
The world seemed to stop.
“What?””
But Thomas was already gone.
I stood there holding the envelope.
Because the question made no sense.
Daniel was Lily’s father.
Everyone knew that.
Everyone.
May you like
Except maybe…
Someone had been lying about that too.
