Chapter 5: The Recording My Wife Left Behind
We escaped through the emergency passage.
Edward led us into an old storage room connected to the mansion's underground garage. He locked the door behind us and handed me a set of keys.
"There's a car outside," he said.
"Take Hannah and leave.""
"What about you?""
"I'll keep Zachary occupied.""
Hannah shook her head.
"We're not leaving you.""
Edward gave her a tired smile.
"Your grandmother would have been proud of you.""
He looked at me.
"Christopher, listen carefully. Don't go home. Don't contact the police from your regular phone. And whatever you do, don't let Zachary get that flash drive.""
"Why?""
"Because it contains evidence that could put several people in prison.""
"Who?""
Edward hesitated.
"Me included.""
I stared at him.
"You expect me to trust you?""
"No. I expect you to protect your daughter.""
That was the only answer I needed.
We left through the underground garage.
A black sedan was parked beside a row of expensive sports cars. Edward handed me the keys.
"There's a safe apartment near the old railway station. The address is saved in the navigation system.""
I took the keys.
"Where can I find Margaret?""
He looked toward Hannah.
"She'll find you.""
Then he turned around and walked back toward the basement.
I watched him disappear.
For eleven years, I had believed Margaret was dead.
Now I was driving away from a mansion filled with people who knew she was alive.
And my daughter was sitting beside me, trying to understand why the man she had married had never truly wanted a marriage.
The safe apartment was small.
Two bedrooms. A narrow kitchen. Dusty furniture. No family photographs.
It smelled of old wood and cigarette smoke.
Hannah placed the wooden box on the kitchen table.
Her hands were still shaking.
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"Did you ever suspect Mom had another child?""
I sat opposite her.
"No.""
"Did you know she had worked for the Albrights?""
"No.""
"Did you know David was involved?""
I looked at the flash drive.
"Apparently, I knew nothing.""
She lowered her head.
"I'm sorry.""
I reached across the table.
"Don't apologize.""
"I married him.""
"You didn't know.""
"I ignored everything. The way he controlled my money. The way he wanted to know where I was. The way he got angry whenever I mentioned Mom.""
"That's not your fault.""
She began crying.
I moved beside her and wrapped my arms around her shoulders.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, "Do you think he ever loved me?""
I didn't know what to say.
Because I had no idea whether Zachary was capable of loving anyone.
I gently touched her hair.
"Whatever he felt, he doesn't get to hurt you again.""
Hannah wiped her cheeks.
"Let's listen.""
We found an old laptop in a desk drawer.
The flash drive contained six audio files, several scanned documents, and a folder marked with a single word.
*CHRISTOPHER.*
I clicked the first recording.
Static filled the room.
Then Margaret's voice emerged.
"Chris, if you're hearing this, something has gone terribly wrong.""
I stopped breathing.
Her voice.
After eleven years.
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
"Margaret?""
The recording continued.
"I don't know whether I'll ever get the chance to explain everything to you. I wanted to come home. I wanted to tell you the truth. But there are people who would rather see me dead than allow you to hear it.""
I looked at Hannah.
She was crying silently.
Margaret continued.
"First, you need to understand something about Zachary. He is my son. I gave birth to him when I was twenty-one.
David was his father. I was told he would be raised safely by the Albright family.""
The recording crackled.
"I believed them. I was wrong.""
A pause.
"Years later, I discovered that David had never stopped visiting him. He was secretly funding the family business through the same accounts I had been hired to investigate.""
I leaned closer to the laptop.
"Margaret, what did you find?""
Her voice became quieter.
"David wasn't simply involved in the financial fraud. He was the person who organized it.""
Hannah looked at me.
"Your best friend?""
I nodded slowly.
The recording continued.
"Edward tried to stop him. Richard helped him. And when I threatened to expose them, David told me something I will never forget.""
There was a long silence.
Then Margaret whispered:
"He said he would take everything from me. My son. My marriage. My daughter.""
My heart stopped.
"My daughter?""
Hannah leaned toward the screen.
Margaret's voice trembled.
"Chris, there is something you must know about Hannah's birth.""
I felt my fingers go numb.
"She was not born at the hospital where you think she was.""
The recording ended abruptly.
A second file began automatically.
This time, Margaret sounded older.
More tired.
"By the time I discovered the truth about David, Hannah was already born. I thought keeping the two children apart would protect them.""
I looked at Hannah.
She was staring at the screen.
"What children?""
The recording continued.
"David knew about Zachary. But he also knew that Hannah was connected to the money I had hidden. He believed she was the key to recovering the original accounts.""
I paused the recording.
"That's why he wanted you to marry Zachary," I said.
Hannah shook her head.
"But if Zachary was his son...""
"David wanted to keep the family close.""
I looked back at the laptop.
The next audio file was dated eleven years earlier.
Margaret's voice sounded frightened.
"Chris, I have to tell you the truth. The accident wasn't an accident. David arranged it. He knew I was taking the original financial records to the authorities.""
A sharp breath came through the speakers.
"I escaped because someone warned me ten minutes before the car left the road.""
I closed my eyes.
"Who warned her?"" Hannah whispered.
The recording answered.
"It was Edward.""
I looked at the final audio file.
Its title was different from the others.
*PLAY ONLY IF DAVID IS DEAD.*
I clicked it.
Margaret's voice came through almost immediately.
"Chris, if David is dead, then there is a chance you are finally safe.""
My stomach tightened.
"There's one final document. It explains why he needed Hannah to marry Zachary. It explains why he wanted the trust. And it explains why I couldn't come home.""
The recording paused.
Then she said:
"David wasn't trying to steal the eighteen million dollars for himself.""
Hannah gripped my arm.
"Then who was he stealing it for?""
Margaret's answer came slowly.
"For the person who was supposed to inherit it before Hannah.""
A faint rustling sound followed.
Then a man's voice interrupted the recording.
I recognized it immediately.
David.
"Margaret, you shouldn't have recorded that.""
The audio ended.
The laptop screen went black.
Hannah stared at me.
"That was David.""
I nodded.
"But he died three months ago.""
"That's what Zachary told us.""
I replayed the final seconds.
David's voice sounded clear.
Close.
Alive.
And suddenly, I remembered something.
Three months earlier, I had received a sympathy card from David's daughter.
It had been handwritten.
She thanked me for being such a good friend to her father and told me he had passed peacefully.
But the envelope had contained no funeral details.
No photograph.
No cemetery information.
I had called her twice.
She hadn't answered.
I pulled out my phone.
"What's wrong?"" Hannah asked.
"David's funeral.""
"What about it?""
"I never attended one.""
I searched my old messages.
There it was.
A text from an unknown number, sent three months earlier.
*Chris, please don't ask questions about Dad's funeral. He wanted things handled privately.*
I read it again.
Then I noticed the sender's name.
Not David's daughter.
The number belonged to a man named Robert Hale.
A former employee of the Albright family.
I searched his name.
The first result was an old photograph from a business event.
Robert stood beside David.
Behind them was a familiar face.
Zachary.
But it was the date beneath the photograph that made me stop.
It had been taken yesterday.
I showed Hannah.
She whispered, "He's alive.""
Before I could answer, the apartment telephone rang.
Neither of us moved.
It rang again.
I picked it up.
A woman's voice came through.
Soft.
Shaking.
"Christopher?""
My heart nearly stopped.
"Who is this?""
There was a breath.
Then a sentence I had waited eleven years to hear.
"It's Margaret.""
I gripped the telephone.
"Where are you?""
"Don't come looking for me.""
"Margaret, please. Just tell me where you are.""
She began crying.
"I've been trying to protect you.""
"From David?""
A pause.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"No, Chris. From Hannah.""
