Chapter 1: The Recording at the Hotel Gala

The ballroom was supposed to celebrate the newest member of our family. Instead, it became the place where my thirteen-year-old daughter exposed a secret that could destroy everything I owned.

And when I heard the man's voice on her phone, I realized the woman standing beside me had never loved me for the reason I believed.

“Once the inheritance is transferred, you won't need Daniel or his daughter anymore.””

The words echoed through the ballroom.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I stood beneath the crystal chandeliers, holding my wife's champagne glass in one hand, staring at the phone in the other. Across from me, Vanessa clutched the crying baby against her chest.

My baby.

At least, that was what she had told me.

“Turn it off!”” Vanessa screamed.

Her voice was so sharp that the string quartet stopped playing.

I looked at her.

“Who was that man?””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the guests. More than a hundred people had gathered for the gala, including business partners, relatives, and several members of my late father's company.

She straightened her dress and forced a trembling smile.

“Daniel, please. Not here.””

“Then where? In our bedroom? Where you recorded yourself planning to steal my inheritance?””

“That's not what happened.””

Maya stood behind me, her small hands gripping the back of my jacket.

“Dad, there's more.””

I turned.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“That's not the worst part.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped toward her.

“Enough, Maya! You've embarrassed this family enough!””

My daughter flinched.

That tiny movement made something inside me snap.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

For five years, she had been the perfect wife. She remembered my business meetings, organized family vacations, and brought flowers to my mother's grave every anniversary of her death.

She had even helped Maya through the difficult years following her mother's passing.

I had believed I was lucky.

Now I wondered whether every kind gesture had been another carefully calculated investment.

I turned back to the phone.

“Play the rest.””

Maya hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She pressed the screen.

The recording continued.

Vanessa's voice returned.

“Daniel already signed the preliminary documents. Once the birth certificate is finalized, everything becomes easier.””

The man laughed.

“And Maya?””

“She won't be a problem. She's a child. Daniel always chooses whatever makes him feel like a good father.””

My stomach twisted.

The man replied, “And if she discovers the truth?””

Vanessa sighed.

“Then we'll make sure nobody believes her.””

A woman near the stage covered her mouth.

I could barely hear my own breathing.

“Who are you talking about?”” I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel, you have to understand—”

“Who is the man?””

She didn't answer.

I looked down at the baby.

His tiny fingers were curled around the edge of Vanessa's dress. His cheeks were red from crying.

For weeks, I had stayed awake beside his crib, terrified that I might not be a good enough father to him.

I had bought him a silver bracelet engraved with my family name.

I had announced his arrival to the entire company.

And now a stranger was telling my wife how to use him to take my money.

I handed the phone to Maya.

“Stay beside me.””

Vanessa took a step forward.

“Daniel, the baby is innocent. Whatever you think happened, he doesn't deserve this.””

I stared at her.

“Then tell me who his father is.””

Her face went completely still.

That was my answer.

Before she could speak, my older brother Richard pushed through the crowd.

“Daniel, stop this nonsense.””

I turned toward him.

Richard was wearing the navy suit I had bought him for the gala. He had been managing our family's investment division since our father died.

He looked angry, but not surprised.

“Take Vanessa and the baby home,” he ordered.

“We'll discuss this privately.””

I frowned.

“Why are you giving me instructions?””

“Because you're making a fool of yourself.””

Richard reached for my arm.

I stepped away.

Then Maya whispered something that made the entire room disappear around me.

“Dad, that's him.””

I looked at her.

“Who's him?””

She pointed at Richard.

“The man in the recording.””

My brother's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

And so did Vanessa.

Richard slowly turned toward Maya.

Then he smiled.

“Sweetheart,” he said, “you've misunderstood something.””

Maya shook her head.

“No, Uncle Richard. I know your voice.””

I stared at my brother.

The man who had stood beside me at our father's funeral.

The man who had helped me raise Maya.

The man who had promised to protect our family business.

Richard glanced at the phone, then at Vanessa.

Finally, he leaned toward me and whispered:

“Daniel, if you want to know the truth about that baby, ask your wife what happened nine months ago.””

Before I could respond, he walked away.

And Vanessa began to cry.

Not the quiet tears of a frightened woman.

She screamed.

“Don't let him leave!””

I turned toward the ballroom doors.

But Richard was already gone.

And on the table beside Vanessa's abandoned champagne glass sat a small white envelope.

May you like

My name was written across it.

In my father's handwriting.
