Chapter 10: The Woman Who Was Never Supposed to Die
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
Elizabeth stood beside my first wife, Catherine, outside my father's estate. Both women were smiling. Catherine had one hand resting on Elizabeth's shoulder, while Elizabeth held a small baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
Maya.
But there was something else.
On the back of the photograph, beneath my father's handwriting, was a date.
Thirteen years ago.
Three days before Catherine died.
I called Mrs. Collins immediately.
“Margaret, where did you find this?””
“In your father's bedroom, sir. Behind the old mirror.””
“Is Maya with you?””
“Yes. She's frightened.””
“Don't let her leave the house. I'm coming.””
I turned toward Michael.
“Richard mentioned that Maya might remember something about Thomas's death. But this photograph says Catherine was connected to the accident.””
Michael examined the image.
“Daniel, what if the original target wasn't Thomas?””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“My wife died in a car accident.””
“That's what the official report says.””
I looked at him.
“What are you suggesting?””
He lowered his voice.
“Your father may have known that Catherine's death wasn't accidental.””
I looked toward the hallway where the officers had taken Richard.
“Then why did he never tell me?””
Michael didn't answer.
I picked up the photograph.
“Because he was protecting someone.””
When I arrived at the estate, Maya was sitting on the floor beside the fireplace.
She held an old wooden jewelry box.
The moment she saw me, she stood.
“Dad!””
I wrapped my arms around her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded, then showed me the box.
“I found it behind the mirror. Mrs. Collins said it belonged to Mom.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside were two wedding photographs, a hospital bracelet, several letters, and a small silver pendant.
The pendant had a tiny engraving.
Catherine. Forever.
I recognized it immediately.
I had given it to my wife on our first wedding anniversary.
But beneath it was another photograph.
Catherine was standing beside my father.
She was holding a document.
On the back, someone had written:
If anything happens to me, Daniel must know that the child was never the problem.
I read it twice.
Maya looked at me.
“Dad, what does that mean?””
I sat beside her.
“I don't know yet.””
Mrs. Collins approached slowly.
“There's something you should hear, sir.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She glanced at Maya.
“Your father asked me to keep a recording. He said I should only give it to you if Richard ever admitted what happened to Thomas.””
My heart began pounding.
“Where is it?””
Mrs. Collins retrieved a small cassette recorder from a cabinet.
She pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then my father's voice emerged.
“If you're hearing this, Daniel, then I failed to protect the people I loved.””
I closed my eyes.
He continued.
“Catherine discovered that Richard had been moving money from the family trust. She found evidence that he had arranged the transfer of Thomas's shares before the accident.””
I looked at Michael.
The recording continued.
“Catherine intended to give the documents to the authorities. Richard found out. I confronted him, but I made the mistake of believing he would stop.””
My father's voice broke.
“He told me he would handle it.””
There was a pause.
Then came the sentence that made my hands tremble.
“Three days later, Catherine's car was forced off the road.””
Maya gasped.
I stopped the recording.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
My wife hadn't died because of a rainy road.
Someone had killed her.
And my father had known.
I pressed play again.
My father's voice returned.
“I couldn't tell Daniel. Richard threatened to destroy him, and I was afraid that if I spoke, Maya would become the next target.””
The recording continued.
“But there is another truth Daniel must understand. Catherine was not investigating the inheritance for herself. She was protecting a child.””
I looked toward Maya.
My daughter was crying silently.
“Which child?”” I whispered.
The recording ended.
A second cassette was inside the box.
Mrs. Collins inserted it.
This time, a woman's voice emerged.
Catherine.
“Daniel, if you ever hear this, I need you to understand something. I love you. I love Maya. But there is something about her birth that your father has hidden from both of us.””
My heart stopped.
Catherine continued.
“Elizabeth isn't the only person who knows the truth. Vanessa was there too.””
I looked at Michael.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“Vanessa was working with Richard before you ever met her. She helped arrange the documents that made Maya's guardianship look legitimate. But she wasn't the person who brought Maya into this world.””
A pause.
Then Catherine whispered:
“The woman who gave birth to Maya was someone Richard wanted dead.””
The cassette clicked.
I stared at the recorder.
Maya slowly moved closer.
“Dad, who was my mother?””
I held her hand.
“Catherine was your mother in every way that mattered. She raised you. She loved you. Nothing can take that away.””
“But who gave birth to me?””
Before I could answer, Michael's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
“Daniel, Richard has been released.””
I stood.
“What?””
“His lawyer secured emergency bail. Apparently, the evidence from the hospital isn't enough to hold him.””
I felt anger surge through me.
“Where is he?””
Michael looked toward the window.
“That's not the worst part.””
He turned his phone toward me.
A photograph showed Richard standing outside the courthouse.
Beside him was a woman.
A woman with dark hair, wearing a black coat.
I recognized her.
She was the same woman in Catherine's photograph.
But this time, she was holding a folder marked:
*MAYA HALE — ORIGINAL BIRTH RECORDS.*
Michael whispered:
“Daniel, I think we've just found the woman who gave birth to your daughter.””
May you like
And when I read the name beneath the photograph, I nearly dropped the phone.
*Vanessa Brooks.*
