Chapter 7: The Baby Belonged to Someone Else
“Richard isn't the baby's biological father either.””
Sophie's words kept repeating in my head long after the call ended.
I stood in the hospital corridor, staring at my phone.
Vanessa sat inside Elizabeth's room, holding the baby. Maya was beside me, and Michael was speaking quietly with the hospital security officers.
Nobody seemed to know what to say.
Finally, Maya broke the silence.
“Dad, does that mean the baby isn't Uncle Richard's either?””
I looked down at her.
“I don't know yet.””
“Then why did he want him?””
That was the question I couldn't answer.
I returned to the room.
Vanessa immediately stood.
“Did Sophie tell you where she is?””
“No. She told me something else.””
I looked directly at her.
“Who is that baby's father?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.””
“You've been raising him for months. You must know something.””
She shook her head.
“Richard told me Sophie had been involved with several people. He said the baby was probably his, but he wanted the DNA test kept secret until the inheritance paperwork was completed.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Mrs. Hale, did you ever see an original DNA report?””
“No.””
“Did Richard show you one?””
“He showed me a document.””
“What did it say?””
Vanessa looked down.
“It said he was the father.””
Michael exchanged a glance with me.
“Did you see the laboratory's name?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Northbridge Genetics.””
Michael closed his eyes.
I recognized the name.
Northbridge Genetics was owned by a holding company in which Richard had invested millions.
“Convenient,” I muttered.
Vanessa placed the baby in the hospital crib.
“I didn't know he was lying.””
I looked at her.
“You knew he was planning to steal money from a thirteen-year-old girl.””
She began crying.
“I thought I could stop him before it went too far.””
“Yet you stood beside him at the gala.””
“I was afraid.””
I pointed toward the door.
“Then you should have been afraid enough to tell me the truth.””
She lowered her head.
For the first time, I noticed that she looked older than she had that morning.
But I felt no sympathy.
Not yet.
Michael's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and then looked at me.
“Sophie has agreed to meet us.””
“Where?””
“An apartment near the old railway station.””
“When?””
“Now.””
We left the hospital with two security officers.
Maya refused to let go of my hand.
Vanessa stayed behind with Elizabeth and the baby under the supervision of hospital staff.
Before we left, I looked at Maya.
“Are you sure you want to come?””
She nodded.
“I want to know why everyone keeps lying about our family.””
I couldn't argue with that.
The apartment building was old, with cracked walls and a flickering light above the entrance.
Michael knocked three times.
No answer.
He knocked again.
A woman's voice came from inside.
“Who is it?””
“Michael Grant. I'm here with Daniel Hale.””
The door opened slightly.
Sophie stood behind it.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was tied loosely, and dark circles surrounded her eyes. When she saw me, she stepped backward.
“Come in.””
The apartment was almost empty.
A small table stood beside the window. A laptop sat open on the sofa. Several cardboard boxes were stacked against the wall.
Sophie locked the door.
“I don't have much time.””
I stepped forward.
“Tell me about the baby.””
She looked at Maya.
Then she knelt slightly.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
Maya didn't respond.
Sophie stood again.
“I'm sorry. I shouldn't have assumed you'd want to talk to me.””
“Just tell us the truth,” I said.
Sophie nodded.
“Richard hired me six years ago. I worked in the investment division. At first, he was charming.
He promised to help my career. Then he started asking me to sign documents I didn't understand.””
“What documents?””
“Trust transfers. Property authorizations. Anything that allowed him to move money without your approval.””
Michael opened his notebook.
“Did you sign them?””
“Some. I stopped when I realized what he was doing.””
She walked toward the table and picked up a photograph.
It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a blue hospital blanket.
“This is Noah.””
I stared at the photograph.
“The baby Vanessa brought to the gala?””
Sophie nodded.
“His name is Noah.””
I looked at her.
“Who is his father?””
She took a long breath.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
Maya's fingers tightened around mine.
“What?””
Sophie looked at me.
“Richard told me that your father had been involved with my mother years ago. He said there was a family connection he wanted to hide. But I didn't believe him until I found the medical records.””
I shook my head.
“My father was nearly seventy when he died.””
“He had a relationship with my mother long before that. Noah's conception was part of a fertility arrangement your father funded.””
Michael frowned.
“An embryo?””
Sophie nodded.
“My mother had frozen genetic material from a previous fertility treatment. Your father had arranged for it to be used in a surrogacy program. Richard controlled the company managing the process.””
I stared at the photograph.
“So Noah is my father's biological child?””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
My father had another child.
A baby born after his death.
And Richard had been trying to use that child to claim control over the family estate.
Sophie continued.
“Richard told me Noah would inherit everything. He said he was protecting your father's final wishes.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did you disappear?””
“Because I found the real documents.””
She opened her laptop.
A folder appeared on the screen.
Inside were emails, payment records, and a scanned medical report.
Michael leaned closer.
“Where did you get these?””
“Richard's private office. I copied them before he discovered what I was doing.””
He opened the medical report.
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
“A genetic relationship analysis.””
He read the first page.
Then the second.
Finally, he looked at me.
“Daniel, your father was right about one thing. This child is connected to the family.””
I leaned forward.
“What does the report say?””
Michael pointed to the results.
“Noah is genetically your half-brother.””
I stared at the screen.
My father's child.
My brother.
And someone had used him as a weapon against Maya.
Sophie wiped her eyes.
“Richard wanted Noah's guardianship transferred to Vanessa. Then he planned to challenge Maya's inheritance using the argument that Noah was your father's legitimate heir.””
“Was he?””
“No. Your father established Noah's separate trust before his death. Richard altered the paperwork to make it look as if Noah was entitled to Maya's estate.””
Michael carefully copied the files.
Then he noticed another document.
A payment authorization.
The recipient was a private security company.
The payment date was three days before my father's car accident.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What's that?””
Sophie looked at the screen.
“That's the document Richard was most afraid of.””
Michael enlarged it.
The payment had been authorized by Richard.
The reference line contained only six words.
Vehicle interference. Thomas Hale. Final payment.
Maya gasped.
I stared at the screen.
My uncle's death.
My father's secret.
Richard's obsession with the inheritance.
It was all connected.
Then Sophie whispered:
“Daniel, there's something else you need to know.””
I looked at her.
“Go on.””
She pointed to the bottom of the payment record.
The date of the transfer was not eleven months ago.
It was fourteen years ago.
May you like
And the account used to make the payment belonged to someone whose name I recognized.
My father.
