Chapter 11: The Mother Who Sold Her Daughter

Vanessa.

The woman I had married.

The woman who had helped raise Maya.

The woman who had stood beside me at the gala, smiling while holding another woman's baby.

Now her name appeared on Maya's original birth records.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Michael, is this real?””

He enlarged the image.

“It's a courthouse photograph. The document is visible, but we'll need the original to verify it.””

Maya stood beside me.

“Dad, does that mean Vanessa is my mother?””

I didn't know how to answer.

Before I could speak, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Daniel, please don't let Richard find me.””

“Why are you on Maya's birth certificate?””

She started crying.

“Because I gave birth to her.””

I closed my eyes.

The words hit harder than I expected.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“For thirteen years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Vanessa sobbed.

“Because your father made me promise.””

I looked at Maya.

She was staring at the floor.

“Where is Richard?””

“I don't know. But he's looking for me.””

“Why?””

“Because I have the original records.””

I took a breath.

“Then come to the estate. We'll talk with Michael and the police.””

“No.””

“Vanessa—”

“Daniel, listen to me. Richard doesn't want the inheritance anymore.””

I frowned.

“What does he want?””

Her answer came in a whisper.

“He wants Maya.””

The call ended.

Michael immediately contacted the investigators.

Within thirty minutes, we were told that Vanessa had been located near the courthouse.

She agreed to meet us at a secure office.

When she entered, she looked completely different from the woman at the gala.

Her makeup was gone.

Her hair was disheveled.

She wore a plain gray coat and carried a brown leather folder.

Maya stood beside me.

Vanessa stopped when she saw her.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

Maya stepped behind my arm.

“Don't call me that.””

Vanessa flinched.

I placed a hand on Maya's shoulder.

“Sit down, Vanessa.””

She obeyed.

Michael opened his notebook.

“Let's start with the birth.””

Vanessa placed the folder on the table.

“I gave birth to Maya thirteen years ago.””

I stared at her.

“Why did you give her to me?””

“Because I couldn't keep her.””

“You could have told me.””

“You weren't supposed to know.””

“Who decided that?””

“My mother.””

I frowned.

“Your mother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She worked for your father. She knew about the family trust. When she discovered that Maya was connected to Thomas, she became afraid.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Explain the connection.””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“Your biological father was Thomas Hale.””

Maya looked confused.

“But Uncle Thomas died before I was born?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He died before you were born, but he was your father.””

I stared at her.

“Elizabeth told us that.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Elizabeth was involved in the arrangement, but she wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.””

“Then why did she say she was my mother?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Because she wanted to protect you.””

Michael interrupted.

“Mrs. Hale, you're making several claims that contradict the medical records we've seen. We need evidence.””

Vanessa opened the folder.

She removed an original birth certificate, a hospital bracelet, and a letter signed by Thomas.

I picked up the letter.

The handwriting was familiar from the documents in my father's study.

To my daughter,

If you're reading this, I hope you've grown up knowing that you were loved before you were even born.

I may never get to hold you. But everything I have belongs to you.

Your uncle Daniel is a good man. If anything happens to me, trust him.

Never trust Richard.

I swallowed.

Thomas had known he might die.

He had written directly to his unborn daughter.

Maya reached for the letter.

I gave it to her.

She read the first few lines, then pressed it against her chest.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Because Richard threatened to take you.””

I looked at her.

“What did he threaten?””

“He said that if I ever revealed Thomas was your father, he would expose the private agreement your father had made with my mother. He would make it look like I had stolen you.””

Michael looked up.

“Was the agreement illegal?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. But Richard altered it.””

She removed another document.

This one was a copy of an adoption authorization.

It showed that I had legally adopted Maya when she was a baby.

My signature was genuine.

I stared at it.

“I signed this.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father told you it was a standard guardianship document. You thought you were signing papers to protect Maya.””

I remembered the day.

My father had placed the documents on my desk.

He had told me that Catherine was struggling after childbirth and that we needed to make sure Maya's future was secure.

I had signed without questioning him.

Michael examined the authorization.

“There's something important here.””

He pointed to a clause.

“Daniel's adoption was finalized. Regardless of biological parentage, he is Maya's legal father.””

I looked at Maya.

She was still holding Thomas's letter.

“So nobody can take me away?”” she asked.

Michael shook his head.

“Not simply because of these documents.””

For the first time that night, she smiled.

Then Vanessa reached into the folder again.

“There is one more thing.””

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Catherine holding a newborn baby.

But Catherine wasn't alone.

Standing beside her was a young woman with a hospital bracelet.

The woman looked exactly like Vanessa.

Except the photograph was dated three months before Maya's birth.

I frowned.

“What's this?””

Vanessa stared at the picture.

“My mother took it.””

“Why?””

“Because Catherine wasn't supposed to raise Maya.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa began trembling.

“Catherine had agreed to carry the baby through a private arrangement. But when she discovered Richard's plan, she refused to hand Maya over.””

I stared at the photograph.

It made no sense.

“Are you saying Catherine gave birth to Maya?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. She was the person who raised her after the arrangement collapsed.””

Michael slowly turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten message.

The truth must remain hidden until the original mother is found.

Beneath it was a name.

*Sophie Bennett.*

I looked up.

“Sophie?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She was the biological mother.””

My mind raced.

Sophie had told us Noah was connected to my father.

She had shown us medical records.

But now Vanessa was claiming Sophie had also given birth to Maya.

“How is that possible?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Because Maya and Noah are twins.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the photograph again.

Then at Maya.

“Twins?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Richard separated them at birth. He arranged for Maya to be placed with Catherine and Daniel, while Noah was kept for the inheritance scheme.””

Maya stared at her.

“Does that mean the baby is my brother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Michael stood abruptly.

“Daniel, we need to verify this immediately.””

“Why?””

He pointed to the medical record.

“Because if they're twins, the genetic evidence changes everything. And Richard may have been using two children's identities to manipulate two separate trusts.””

Vanessa grabbed my wrist.

“There's no time.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She leaned closer.

“Because Richard already knows where Sophie is.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Sophie was sitting in a car.

Her hands were tied.

May you like

And beside her was a handwritten note.

One child for the truth. Two children for the inheritance.
