Chapter 9: The Night Everyone Returned to the Estate
I wanted to go straight to the police.
Michael insisted that we do it carefully.
“Richard has already shown he knows how to manipulate the evidence,” he said.
“We need to protect Elizabeth, secure Noah, and make sure Maya isn't used as leverage.””
I looked at him.
“He has my uncle's blood on his hands. How much more evidence do we need?””
“Enough to keep him from walking free.””
Sophie stood beside the storage unit door.
“I know where he'll take Elizabeth.””
We turned toward her.
“Where?””
“The old Hale estate.””
I frowned.
“My father's house?””
She nodded.
“There's a private building behind the main residence. Richard used it for confidential business meetings.””
Michael closed his case.
“Then we contact the authorities and arrange a controlled intervention.””
I looked at Maya.
“No more surprises. You're staying with Mrs. Collins.””
She shook her head.
“Dad—”
“No.””
She looked hurt.
I knelt in front of her.
“You've already done more than anyone could have expected. Let the adults handle this part.””
“But Elizabeth is in danger.””
“I know.””
“And the baby?””
“I'll make sure he's safe.””
Maya held my face between her hands.
“You promised you'd never leave me.””
My throat tightened.
“I meant it.””
She finally nodded.
At nine that evening, I arrived at the estate with Michael and two officers.
Vanessa was already there.
She stood beside the main entrance, holding Noah.
Her face was pale.
“Where is Richard?”” I asked.
“In the study.””
“Is Elizabeth with him?””
Vanessa nodded.
I looked at the baby.
“Why did you bring Noah?””
“Because he threatened Elizabeth.””
I stared at her.
“You could have called the police.””
“He said he would hurt her before anyone could arrive.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Mrs. Hale, did you bring the original documents?””
Vanessa nodded.
She handed him a sealed envelope.
“Everything I have.””
Michael opened it.
Inside were copies of emails, financial statements, and a signed confession.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She began crying.
“My statement.””
“You're confessing?””
“Yes.””
“To what?””
“To helping Richard forge the trust documents. To lying about Noah's parentage. To hiding the original guardianship agreement.””
I stared at her.
“Why now?””
She looked down at the baby.
“Because I finally understood that Richard never intended to share anything with me. He planned to blame everything on me and disappear.””
I shook my head.
“You should have understood that before you hurt Maya.””
“I know.””
She reached into her coat and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed Maya as a toddler, sitting on my shoulders at the beach.
I remembered that day.
Vanessa had taken the picture.
She looked at it for a long time.
“I loved her,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“Then you should have protected her.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
Michael touched my arm.
“We need to move.””
The study was lit by a single desk lamp.
Richard stood beside the fireplace.
Elizabeth sat in an armchair, her hands tied loosely with a strip of fabric.
When he saw us, he smiled.
“Daniel. I was wondering when you'd arrive.””
I stepped forward.
“Let her go.””
Richard glanced at Vanessa.
“You brought the baby?””
She nodded.
Richard held out his arms.
Vanessa didn't move.
“Richard, it's over.””
His smile disappeared.
“What did you say?””
“I said it's over.””
He stared at her.
Then he laughed.
“You've finally decided to grow a conscience?””
Vanessa tightened her hold on Noah.
“I've given Michael everything.””
Richard looked at me.
“You think she's telling the truth?””
“I don't care what you think.””
He walked toward the desk.
“Your father made the same mistake. He trusted people because he wanted to believe they were better than they were.””
I stared at him.
“You killed Thomas.””
Richard's expression changed.
For a moment, the room became completely still.
Then he shrugged.
“He was my brother.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Richard walked to the fireplace and poured himself a drink.
“He was going to destroy the company. He wanted to transfer the shares to a trust your father controlled. I couldn't allow that.””
“So you arranged the accident?””
Richard drank.
“I arranged for someone to scare him.””
“And he died.””
Richard looked into his glass.
“Things happen.””
Elizabeth suddenly spoke.
“You told me you would never hurt another member of this family.””
Richard turned.
“Be quiet.””
“You promised Thomas would be safe.””
Richard slammed the glass against the fireplace.
“Thomas brought it on himself!””
I felt my hands curl into fists.
Michael quietly placed his phone on the desk.
Its recording light was on.
Richard noticed.
He looked at it.
Then he smiled.
“Do you think anyone will believe you?””
Before I could answer, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
“Here's something interesting.””
He placed it on the desk.
It was a new trust amendment.
My father's signature appeared at the bottom.
I stepped closer.
“That document is fake.””
Richard smiled.
“Perhaps. But it changes everything.””
Michael examined it.
“This was filed today.””
I looked at the date.
Richard had submitted a legal claim transferring control of Maya's trust to an independent administrator.
But the administrator's name was not Vanessa's.
It was Richard's.
I turned toward him.
“You've already filed this?””
“You can't do that.””
Richard shrugged.
“Your father gave me authority under certain circumstances.””
Michael examined the attached certification.
Then his expression changed.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“This document contains a second authorization.””
He turned the page.
I read the name.
My own.
But beneath it was a statement claiming that I had voluntarily surrendered my parental rights over Maya.
I stared at Richard.
“You forged my signature again.””
Richard smiled.
“Prove it.””
Then Elizabeth began struggling against the chair.
“Daniel! Don't let him file that!””
Richard turned toward her.
“Be quiet!””
She shook her head desperately.
“There's something he hasn't told you!””
Richard took a step toward her.
I moved between them.
“What?””
Elizabeth looked directly at me.
“Your father didn't leave Maya forty-two million dollars because she was Thomas's daughter.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“He left it because Maya was the only person who could legally expose what Richard did to Thomas.””
Richard's face went white.
Elizabeth continued.
“Thomas recorded everything before he died. He gave the original recording to your father. And your father placed it inside Maya's inheritance trust.””
Michael slowly looked up.
“Where?””
Elizabeth swallowed.
“Inside the original trust deed.””
Richard suddenly lunged toward the desk.
He grabbed the document and tore it in half.
“That's enough!””
The study door burst open.
Two officers rushed inside.
“Richard Hale! Step away from the desk!””
Richard raised his hands.
But he was smiling.
He looked at me as the officers approached.
“You think you've won, Daniel?””
I stared at him.
“It's over.””
“No,” he whispered.
“You still don't know why your father chose Maya.””
The officers seized his arms.
As they escorted him toward the door, he turned one final time.
“Ask your daughter what she remembers about the night Thomas died.””
I froze.
Maya had been only a baby.
She couldn't possibly remember.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Mrs. Collins.
Daniel, Maya is asking for you. She found something in your father's old bedroom.
Another message appeared.
It's a photograph of her mother.
I stared at the screen.
Maya's biological mother was Elizabeth.
But the photograph couldn't be of her.
Because Mrs. Collins had attached the image.
And standing beside Elizabeth was another woman.
My first wife.
Maya's mother.
The woman I had buried thirteen years earlier.

At the bottom of the photograph, my father had written a sentence.
The accident was meant for her, not Thomas.
