Chapter 6: My Brother's Final Offer

Richard entered the hospital room as if he owned it.

His expensive shoes clicked against the tiled floor.

Vanessa followed, carrying the infant in a white blanket.

“Daniel,” Richard said calmly.

“This has gone far enough.””

I stepped between him and Maya.

“Get out.””

Richard glanced at Elizabeth.

“So you've found her.””

Elizabeth pulled Maya closer.

“You have no right to be here.””

Richard ignored her.

He placed his briefcase on the hospital chair.

“Daniel, I came to offer you a solution.””

I laughed.

“You broke into my family, forged my signature, and used my wife to steal a fortune. What solution could you possibly offer?””

He opened the briefcase.

Inside were several legal documents.

“Sign these, and everything ends tonight.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Those documents are legally meaningless.””

Richard smiled.

“Are they?””

He removed another sheet.

“This is a temporary guardianship transfer. Daniel gives up his rights to Maya's trust. Vanessa becomes the permanent administrator.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Is that what you want?””

She couldn't meet my eyes.

“Daniel, please.””

“Answer me.””

Richard interrupted.

“Don't pressure her. She's had a difficult evening.””

I moved toward him.

“You don't get to speak for her.””

Richard calmly placed a pen on the table.

“Forty-two million dollars, Daniel. That's what Maya's trust is worth today. The rest of Thomas's estate is tied up in property and investments. If you sign, you can keep your company, your house, and your reputation.””

“And if I don't?””

Richard glanced at Maya.

“Then things become complicated.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She shifted the baby in her arms.

Then Richard turned back toward me.

“Your daughter has a complicated legal history. Her birth records were altered. Her guardianship was arranged privately. There are documents suggesting that you knew the truth and concealed it.””

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“That's a criminal accusation. Be careful.””

Richard smiled.

“I'm simply stating facts.””

I looked at my brother.

“You're threatening to have me arrested?””

“I'm giving you a choice.””

Maya suddenly stepped forward.

“Why do you hate me?””

Richard looked down at her.

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then he said something I would never forget.

“Because your existence cost me everything.””

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

I moved toward her.

“Don't listen to him.””

Richard continued.

“Your grandfather gave you a fortune that should have belonged to this family. He chose you over his own sons.””

I stared at him.

“You think a thirteen-year-old girl stole your inheritance?””

“I think your father made a terrible decision.””

“My father?””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“He gave Thomas everything. He gave you the company. And he gave Maya the estate. What exactly did he leave me?””

I stared at him.

“You have a successful investment division, several properties, and a substantial salary.””

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

“I built that division!””

“You managed it.””

“I made it profitable!””

“And now you want a child's money.””

His jaw tightened.

For a moment, I saw the brother I remembered from childhood.

The one who used to stand outside my bedroom when I had nightmares.

The one who taught me to ride a bicycle.

Then I remembered my father's letter.

The accident that killed Thomas was not an accident.

I looked at Richard.

“Did you kill Uncle Thomas?””

Vanessa gasped.

Richard went completely still.

Then he laughed.

“Where did you hear that?””

I held up the letter.

“My father wrote it.””

Richard's eyes moved to the paper.

Something changed.

He looked at Vanessa.

She took a step backward.

“Richard?””

He ignored her.

“Your father was confused near the end. He was taking medication. He wrote all sorts of things.””

“Then why are you afraid of this letter?””

Richard suddenly reached for it.

Michael blocked him.

“Don't.””

Richard shoved him aside.

The briefcase fell from the chair, scattering documents across the floor.

Maya screamed.

I pulled her behind me.

Vanessa dropped the baby's blanket slightly as she tried to catch the falling papers.

And in that moment, something slipped from her handbag.

A small digital recorder.

It hit the floor and began playing automatically.

Richard's voice filled the room.

“Thomas should have stayed out of the trust. I warned him. But he wouldn't listen.””

Then another voice.

Vanessa's.

“What if Daniel finds out?””

Richard answered.

“Daniel won't find out anything. By the time he understands what's happening, Maya will be legally under our control.””

I stared at my brother.

The recording continued.

“And what about the accident?””

Richard laughed.

“That was handled years ago.””

Nobody moved.

Even the baby had stopped crying.

Vanessa stared at the recorder as if it were a bomb.

I turned toward her.

“You recorded him?””

She nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“I was afraid of him.””

Richard lunged for the device.

Michael grabbed his arm.

“Don't touch it!””

Richard shoved him away and turned toward the door.

Two security officers appeared in the hallway.

I had called them before entering the room.

“Mr. Hale,” one officer said.

“We need you to come with us.””

Richard looked at me.

“You think this is over?””

I didn't answer.

He pointed toward Maya.

“You have no idea what your father did to protect her.””

Then he was escorted out.

For several seconds, I stood frozen.

Vanessa slowly lowered herself into the chair.

The baby began crying again.

I looked at her.

“Why did you come here?””

She wiped her face.

“Because Richard told me he was going to take Maya tonight.””

“And you believed him?””

“He said he had documents proving you were an unfit guardian.””

Michael picked up the recorder.

“Mrs. Hale, this recording is important. But we need to understand something. Why did you keep it?””

Vanessa looked down at the baby.

“Because I finally realized Richard was going to betray me too.””

I stared at her.

“You helped him.””

“I know.””

“You lied to Maya.””

“I know.””

“You used our marriage.””

Her shoulders shook.

“I know, Daniel.””

I looked away.

There was no apology that could repair what she had done.

Then the baby began crying louder.

Vanessa gently lifted him.

“I never wanted him to be part of this.””

I stared at the child.

“Who is his biological mother?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a folded photograph.

She handed it to me.

A young woman stood beside Richard in front of an office building.

I recognized her immediately.

She had attended several company events.

She had served as Richard's personal assistant for four years.

Her name was Sophie Bennett.

But what caught my attention wasn't her face.

It was the date written on the back.

The photograph had been taken two weeks before the baby was born.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where is Sophie now?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“She disappeared after the delivery.””

Michael frowned.

“Disappeared?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Richard told everyone she had resigned and moved abroad.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Does she know what happened to her baby?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I don't think she does.””

My phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice came through.

“Daniel Hale?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Sophie Bennett.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face went white.

Sophie continued.

“I know you've found the baby.””

I couldn't speak.

Then she whispered:

“Please, don't let Richard take him. Because that child isn't just his son.””

I gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

Her answer shattered the last piece of certainty I had left.

“Richard isn't the baby's biological father either.””

The call disconnected.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Vanessa stared at me.

Michael stopped collecting the scattered documents.

And Maya whispered:

“Dad… then whose baby is he?””

I looked at the child in Vanessa's arms.

For the first time, I understood that the biggest secret in our family had not yet been revealed.

And somewhere outside that hospital, Sophie Bennett knew exactly whose child we had been protecting.
